POWER ELECTRONICS MV / TWIN SKID GEN II COMPACT

INTRODUCTION
1
The Freesun MV SKID / TWIN SKID are compact turnkey outdoor platforms made from high resistance
galvanized steel with all the medium voltage equipment integrated, including an outdoor power
transformer, MV switchgear, oil tank, filter and built in fast power connection to the Freesun HEMK v4.0
solar inverter.

Note: Depending on the customer configuration, the appearance and elements of the MV SKID or
TWIN SKID stations could differ. Consequently, the information given here may be taken as a
reference for the product finally ordered. The time of maintenance of a TWIN SKID is practically
double that the ones that are presented here for a MV SKID, therefore this manual covers
maintenance of both equipment.

The maintenance interval depends on the location and the ambient conditions. A device installed in a dusty
environment requires more frequent maintenance than recommended. The maintenance interval is to be
adapted accordingly.

CAUTION

Carefully read all maintenance tasks before manipulating the equipment and pay special attention to
installations with a high level of contamination, as the frequency of scheduled actions may vary due to
the environmental conditions in which the equipment is located. For further details, please, contact Power
Electronics.

Required qualification to perform maintenance tasks

The different maintenance types along with the qualification required to carry them out is detailed in the
Customer Maintenance Training Plan documents.

In all cases, official maintenance reports must be filled in and sent to Power Electronics; the warranty of
the equipment can be conditioned to the delivery in time of such reports.

NOTICE

Apart from the three-monthly, six-monthly and annual routines, Power Electronics recommends an oil
analysis of the main transformer after the first 5 years. After this, perform a scheduled complete oil
analysis every 2-5 years depending on the transformer manufacturer recommendations. Consult Power
Electronics for further information.

In case of any malfunction or suspicious situation, an oil sample should be taken and evaluated.

Maneuvres in string boxes, line cell and MV switchgear are out of the scope of Power Electronics’
staff.

To check tasks regarding the UPS (if present), the proper range of the DC source, the transformer
tripper test, RCDs and SPDs operation and the AASS transformer connections, refer to the HEMK

SAFE STOP AND START UP

2
For carrying out some maintenance tasks, it is necessary to stop the station in safe conditions and generate
a safe scenario to do the tasks. Make sure the inverter is properly stopped and locked before stopping the
MV SKID / TWIN SKID.

The safe stop and start up maneuvers of the MV SKID / TWIN SKID are explained in this section. To carry
out the safe stop and start up of the equipment, the protection cell and line cells of the MV switchgear must
be open and earthed.

The maneuvers on the MV switchgear will vary depending on the brand of the switchgear. Maneuvers for
Siemens and Ormazabal, the most commonly used ones, will be explained in sections “Maneuvers to stop
SIEMENS MV switchgear”and “Maneuvers to stop ORMAZABAL MV switchgear”.

After these actions, the installation must be set on service back again. Refer to section “Safe start up”.

CAUTION

Three basic power statuses will be required to perform the maintenance actions:

1.- Power revision or pushing power (three-monthly, six-monthly and annual maintenance). Inverter
running.

2.- Revision with auxiliary and AC voltage (annual maintenance). This implies that the inverter is
stopped but the MV / TWIN SKID is still energized, connected to the grid.
In addition, this state requires specific PPE to be used. Please refer to the plant safety studies, to
proceed appropriately.

3.- Dead revision or zero voltage test (annual and three-yearly maintenance). This implies no voltage
inside the station. (MV Transformer OFF, MV Switchgear earthed and locked).

This is detailed in this chapter. Always wear the proper PPE for each action.

MV SKID / TWIN SKID statuses

Before detailing these procedures, it is convenient to define three possible statuses to carry out the tasks
of maintenance. These statuses are attached to every maintenance action groups. Wear always the PPE
according to electric risk and to the current H&S regulations.

MV SKID / TWIN SKID STATUSES

Proper status for carrying the power revision.
STATUS 1
MV SKID / TWIN SKID running (no action required from safe stop maneuvers).
Proper status for carrying the revision with auxiliary and AC voltage. The inverter is stopped but the MV /TWIN
STATUS 2
SKID is still energized, connected to the grid.
Proper status for carrying the dead revision.
MV SKID / TWIN SKID completely stopped, isolated, discharged, locked and earthed. Follow the complete process
in this section depending on the MV switchgear.
STATUS 3
Make sure the MV switchgear is opened and earthed / locked.
Make sure there is no independent auxiliary supply feeding the MV SKID / TWIN SKID.
Make sure there is no live voltage in the MV facility network (customer responsibility).

SAFE STOP AND START UP 17

MV / TWIN SKID GEN II COMPACT POWER ELECTRONICS

CAUTION

The absence of voltage must be verified once an equipment has been isolated, with the necessary means
and PPE.

The inverter-specific diagrams of the concrete plant should also be reviewed.

Although the voltmeters have their own programmed checks, it is advisable to test that they are working
correctly, especially in the absence of voltage. It could be damaged and show wrong values. Use
commercial test equipment for the verifications.
It is responsibility of the technical personnel to have their tools calibrated and in good conditions.

Even multimeters / medium voltage measuring poles have scheduled revisions, it is convenient always to
check the multimeter is working fine before making measures, especially to prove dead. It might be
damaged and show false values. Use a commercial proving unit to check it.
It is responsibility of the technical personnel to have their tools calibrated and in good conditions.

NOTICE

This symbol means no tool is required for the maintenance task.
