HISTORY ABSTRACT

Role of Kazi Syed Karimuddin, Ganpatrao Dani, Nibaran Chandra Laskar in making
Indian Constitution

The Indian Constituent assembly was elected to write Indian Constitution. After the Indian
Independence from British Government, the members of constituent assembly served as
nation’s first parliament. The total membership of assembly was 385. Out of which 292
members were elected through the provisional legislative assemblies, 93 members
represented Indian Princely States. After the Partition of India number of members of
constituent assembly came to 299, of whom 284 were actually present on the 26 th November,
1949. In this project I would like to mention briefly about Kazi Syed Karimuddin, Ganpatrao
Dani and Nibaran Chandra Laskar and their contributions and roles as members of
constituent assembly in making constitution of India.

Kazi Syed Karimuddin: He was the member of Constituent Assembly. He was an MLA of
Madhya Pradesh (central province) until 1952 and also a member of Rajya Sabha from 1954
to 1958. The 1st attempt in the modern India to protect the privacy of an individual against
unreasonable interference of state was in the Constituent Assembly when Kazi Syed
Karimuddin moved an amendment on the lines of the constitutions of America and Irish.
However, Dr. B.R.Ambedkar gave reserved support but didn’t make right to privacy a
fundamental right. He played a key role in Provisional Committee.

Nibaran Chandra Laskar: He joined congress and participated in freedom and Dalit
liberation movement. He was elected member of Assam Legislative Assembly in 1947. He
was member of constituent assembly from 1947 to 1950. He supported article 330 (article
292 of the draft constitution) and defended reservation for the SCs and the STs on the ground
that they had been economically, educationally and politically backward.

Ganpatrao Dani: Ganpatrao Dani was member of constituent assembly. Both Ganpatrao
Dani and Kazi Syed Karimuddin were members of Central Provinces and Berar. Ganpatrao
Dani was member of Indian National Congress. He won in Madhya Pradesh assembly
elections from Pithora constituency in 1951.
