Chapter 1:- Safety & Precautions At Work
System.

1.1 Safety at Work

 Safety of workers (also known as worker safety and occupational health and
safety) refers to the provision of a safe working environment, safe
equipment, policies, and procedures in order to ensure workers’ health
and safety. And it also includes Industrial Safety, which is set of safety
protocols, policies, and regulations to protect the workers, workplace,
and work equipment from hazards.

1.2 Industrial safety is necessary

 With the alarming rate of industrial accidents happening every year
industrial safety is a crucial step to save human lives. Moreover,
workers must be educated on how to handle the equipment and basic
safety procedures for adequate safety.

1.3 Objectives of Industrial Safety

 Preventing work related fatalities, disabling injuries, illness and
damage to machinery or materials.
 Ensuring continued production by preventing disruptive incidents.
 Reducing workers compensation costs, maintaining lower insurance
rates and minimizing indirect costs associated with accidents.
 Strengthening safety culture and increasing employee morals.
 Meeting vendor and client expectations.

1.4 Industrial Safety planning

 Fire prevention systems
 Health and hygiene
 Safety training

1
 Alarms and warning systems
 Adequate lightning in work areas and corridors
 Insulations
 Signboards and written safety instruction
 Plant layout
 Flooring and working areas that are easy to clean and organize
 Good Housekeeping after every work

And in the safety measures always wear helmet, safety shoes, safety
goggles and safety gloves. And always see that others working with you are
following the safety measures.

Chapter 2:- Permit to Work System

2
2.1 Permit to work System
 A Permit to Work system is a formal written system used to control
and execute certain types of jobs safely, which are identified as
potentially hazardous. It is also a means of communication between
different departments, plant supervisors, operators, agencies, etc.

2.2 Permit to Work Usage – a Permit is used to:

 Identify the scope of a specific task and where the work will be
conducted
 Identify hazards and controls associated with the work task.
 Identify the personnel who have oversight responsibility.
 Identify the personnel performing the work.
 Assign responsibility for various tasks.
 Identify energy isolations/lockout/tag-outs that will be in effect for
the work that is being conducted.
 Verify adequate control over the return to normal operations.

Providing a standardized & uniform procedure for obtaining authorization to

perform jobs require special consideration to ensure the safety of personnel,
and protection of facilities by using a safe system of work and clear
understanding between the working agencies/departments involved. In Atul
Ltd, for the proper and safe running of the daily work, these are the
permission for letting go of the workflow smooth and harmlessly.

The types of work for which PTW systems shall be applied include
maintenance and repair, inspection, testing, construction, dismantling,
modification, and cleaning.

Chapter 3:- High Transformer Yard

3.1 Figure of HT Yard:-

Fig. 3.1:- HT Yard

 A Transformer is a device that transfers electric energy from

one alternating-current circuit to one or more other circuits,
either increasing (stepping up) or reducing (stepping down)
the voltage.

3.2 Principle: - The transformer works on the principle of Faraday's

law of electromagnetic induction and mutual induction. There are
usually two coils primary coil and secondary coil on the transformer core.
The core laminations are joined in the form of strips. The two coils have
high mutual inductance.

4
 A transformer is a device which step-up or step-down the level of AC
current or voltage without changing the primary (i.e. input source)
frequency. Transformer only works on AC and can't be operated on DC
i.e. it has been designed to be operated only and only on alternating
current and voltage.
 The 11kV lines are used in residential areas and are what feeds the local
transformers, which then distributes power to the buildings in the area.
33kV lines on the other hand involve much higher voltages and are used
to distribute power from one small sub-station to another
 . Transformers are also useful in stopping the flow of electricity and
interrupting an electric current. Transformers are commonly present
in circuit breakers,

3.3 Parts of Transformer

 Core. The core of the transformer is used to support the windings.
 Windings:-Windings consist of several copper coil turns bundled
together, each bundle connected to form a complete winding.
1. Insulating materials.
2. Transformer oil.
3. Conservator.
4. Breather.
5. Tap changer.
6. Cooling tubes.
1. Insulating material
 The solid insulation materials widely used in the transformer
are paper, press- board, and transformer board,
2. Transformer oil.
 The transformer oil insulates as well as cools the core and coil
assembly. The core and windings of the transformer must be
completely immersed in the oil that normally contains hydrocarbon
mineral oils.
3. Conservator
 The conservator is an airtight metallic cylindrical drum fitted above
the transformer that conserves the transformer oil. It is vented at
the top and is filled only half with the oil to allow expansion and
contraction during temperature variations.

5
4. Breather
The silica gel breather of transformer is very simple in the aspect of design.
It is nothing but a pot of silica gel through which, air passes during breathing
of transformer. The silica gel is a very good absorber of moisture
5. Tap Changer
 The purpose of a tap changer is to regulate the output voltage of a
transformer. It does this by altering the number of turns in one
winding and thereby changing the turns ratio of the transformer.
6. Cooling Tubes
 The main function of the cooling tubes is to transfer heat from the
transformer core and coils to the environment. The heated
transformer oil circulates through the cooling tubes where the heat
radiates out by natural airflow and hence cooling the transformer oil.

3.4 Flow of Current in Industries

 The power generating power plant generate the power in big amount than
it passes to the main transformer of the industries.

Chapter 4:- Cooling Tower

4.1 Figure of Cooling Tower:-

Fig.4.1:- Cooling Tower

 A Cooling Tower is a device that reject waste heat to the

atmosphere through the cooling of coolant stream, usually a
water stream to lower temperature.

4.2 Working

 The water from chiller comes here, in Cooling Tower on the

top there is a fan rotating anticlockwise. The water is
circulated in this tower through pipes and the fan which is
rotating anticlockwise throws the hot air outside from the top
and this way the temperature of the water is decreased by 2 to

8
3 degree and send again to chiller with the help of pump and
from the chiller the water is circulated to manufacturing units
and AHU.
