long heroic narratives in verse in the cordillera have been presented and fully documented, The
Ifugao HUDHUD and Kalinga ULLALIM.
The Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed by the Ifugao community, which
is well known for its rice terraces extending over the highlands of the northern island of the
Philippine archipelago. It is practised during the rice sowing season, at harvest time and at
funeral wakes and rituals.
Ullalim is a renowned song style of the Kalinga, traditionally sung to recount long, epic stories
about traditional heroes (like Banna) and villains. The ullalim can also be used to describe other
events or even to give advice.

MYTHS - Myths in Cordillera literature are captivating tales that reveal the rich cultural heritage

remote past when the world had not yet taken its present form and human affairs went on with a lot
of divine intervention. Their myths are of a sacred nature, hence there are restrictions as to when and
where they can be told. They are recited to affirm the propriety of ceremonies, to summon the spirits,
or to validate certain beliefs. Examples of Cordillera myths include How Balitok and Bugan
Obtained Children (Ifugao), and Lumawig and Kabigat (Ibaloy).
LEGENDS - On the other hand, legends are considered as truthful accounts although the events they
narrate often take place at a time that is more recent than the mythological past. Examples of Cordillera
legends are The Origin of Man (Kankanay) and The Legend of Magat River.
