EPIC POETRY - Many of the Philippines epic traditions have vanished, but at least two

long heroic narratives in verse in the cordillera have been presented and fully documented, The
Ifugao HUDHUD and Kalinga ULLALIM.

The Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed by the Ifugao community, which
is well known for its rice terraces extending over the highlands of the northern island of the
Philippine archipelago. It is practised during the rice sowing season, at harvest time and at
funeral wakes and rituals.

Ullalim is a renowned song style of the Kalinga, traditionally sung to recount long, epic stories
about traditional heroes (like Banna) and villains. The ullalim can also be used to describe other
events or even to give advice.
