chlorine:
Chlorine is a substance that has many uses, including industrial,
commercial, recreational and even home cleaning. Chlorine is
used in various industries as a cleaning agent and as an additive in
the production of many chemical products. This makes it very
useful for modern business and industry.

Alchemists knew hydrochloric acid. This

gaseous element was first created in 1774
by Karl Wilhelm Scheele in Uppsala,
Sweden, by heating the mineral pyrolusite,
natural manganese dioxide, MnO2 and
hydrochloric acid. He said a dark greenish-
yellow gas was released, which had a
suffocating odor and dissolved in water to
form an acidic solution. He observed that it
bleached the litmus paper and caused the
leaves and flowers to discolor.
