Sheet#3
" Alternator Protection"
PROPLEMS
1- In restricted earth-fault protection of generator, if the relay pick-up value is 5% of the
CT rating, the CT ratio is 50/5 and if the machine neutral impedance at 11 kV rated
is 200Ω. Calculate the percentage of the winding to be left unprotected.

2- An 11 kV, three phase system of 30MVA star connected alternator is protected by an

earth fault relay having 10% setting. If the neutral resistance limits the maximum fault
current to 40% of full-load value. The C.T. ratio is 2000/1
Determine the following:
(a) The value of resistor.
(b) The percentage of winding protected.

3- An alternator stator winding protected by a percentage differential relay is shown in

𝐼 +𝐼
figure. The relay has 20% of characteristics |𝐼1 − 𝐼2 | against ( 1 2). The high
2
resistance ground fault has occurred near the grounded neutral end of the generator
winding while the generator is carrying load. The current flowing at each end of the
generator winding is as shown in Figure. Assuming that C.T. ratio is 600/5 A, Will
the relay operate to trip the circuit breaker?
