ABSTRACT

This study aims to improve students' speaking skills at the Department of

Teacher Education in Elementary. Based on interviews carried out to get initial data
on the students' speaking skills, it was shown that the students had problems speaking
due to inadequate knowledge of the language, which in turn made them feel
unconfident. The students were not familiar with the various speaking activities that
facilitate their speaking. They read the text to convey ideas and lack strategies when
speaking. To help the students, task-based learning was adapted through action
research in one-semester courses. Fifteen students in the second semester participated
in this study.

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study. It includes, statement of the
problem, significance of the study and definition of terms.

Background of the study

Public speaking is when a speaker stands in front of an audience and gives a

speech in a planned way with the intention of either persuading, educating, or
entertaining the audience. Presentations are very similar to public speaking; the
distinction is that the latter is typically intended for a professional or academic setting.
Speaking in front of an audience can serve a variety of purposes. It may be done
simply to share a story, an experience, spread awareness of a message, or inspire
people to take action. Leadership, personal growth, business, customer service, mass
communication, and large group communication are all areas where public speaking
skills come in handy. For instance, if the speaker is skilled at engaging in personal
sharing and conveying sincerity in his message, the audience's emotions may even be
aroused.

In addition, from casual discussions with some of them, it was learned that the
students believed their preparations were still lacking, suffered from stage fright, and
had various other comparable issues. They also had trouble implementing the
lecturers' recommendations because there were multiple areas that needed to be
improved simultaneously in terms of both content and presentation.

The researcher believes that it is crucial to understand how students view the
value of public speaking abilities in light of the preceding reasoning. Given that
students are the subject of the learning process, it is important to understand their
perceptions. After learning about students' perceptions, ideally the necessary

modifications can be made to ensure that the speaking skills learning process is
successful.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Based on the background of the study, some problems can identified, related to
the students’ public speaking skills. The problem are:

1. Do students’ public speaking skills improve by the use of reporting and

demonstration?

2. How may the reporting and demonstration help to develop the public
speaking skills?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Researchers conducted this study to know if class reporting and demonstration

can improve their public speaking as perceive by 3rd year. The researchers pursues this
study because they believe that the results will be of great value to the following
individuals.

School Administration. The result of this study will assist school administrators
in developing or implementing programs that will help improve the performance of
that particular school.

Teachers. It is useful to teachers to help them consider the skills their students
need to improve their performance.

Parents. This study will help parents to educate their children on their speaking
skills, which could have impact on the student performance in school.

Students. This will help the student enhance their own speaking skills. The
study’s finding will help students improve their speaking skills. This speaking skill
may result in improved public speaking skills.

Future Researchers. This study will be helpful to other researchers looking for a
research guide.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following words used in this study have been interpreted using operational
and conceptual methods to help better understanding the topic and clearer the meaning
that the researchers want to inform:

Audience. The assembled spectators or listeners at a public event, such as a

play, movie, concert, or meeting.

Class reporting. Reporting is the process used to communicate knowledge

gained from assessing student learning. The purpose of reporting is to provide relevant
information about a student’s progress to students, parents, support staff and other
teachers.

RELATED REVIEW LITERATURE

Foreign

The act of public speaking is difficult. Physical activity (the function of the
speech organs in producing speech, facial expressions, gestures, and bodily
movements), intellectual activity (producing texts), and the mental component (the
speaker's moods and emotions) are all used in public speaking. As a result, the
speaker must make use of all of his or her physical resources. Additionally,
preparation for a particular performance as well as a certain educational foundation
are required for a successful performance.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter concentrates on the discussion of the research methodology and

procedures adhered to by the researcher in order to answer systematically the specific
problems posed for investigation. Specifically, the research methodology,
methodology approach, population and locale, research instrument and tools, data
gathering procedure of the data used for the accurate `data analysis and interpretation
were explained in this chapter.

METHOD APPROACH

A technique is made up of the three elements approach, design, and process. A

theory of language and language learning is called an approach. Design includes a
definition of linguistic content, guidelines for the choice and arrangement of content,
and an explanation of the roles of the teacher, the student, and the teaching resources.
Procedure is concerned with a method's techniques and practices. The model is
explored in relation to current methodology ideas, ethical standard, and its use is
illustrated.

POPULATION AND LOCALE

This study focuses on improving the public speaking skills of 3 rd year beed 3203
students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. The factors used to influence the
students to demonstrate and reporting. The study sought to determine the factors that
affect students’ public speaking skills.

INSTRUMENT AND TOOLS

In this study, the following instrument are utilized by the researcher to gather all
the data needed to answer the specific problems in the study.

GATHERING DATA

The descriptive survey approach will be modified to fulfill the study's objectives.

It entails the descriptive observation, evaluation, and interpretation of the current

characteristics, make-up, or action of a particular phenomenon. The current situation,
or how a person or group behaves or operates at the moment, is the main focus. The
focus is on the present, or how a person, group, or organization is acting or
functioning right now.

DATA ANALYSIS

The questionnaire will then be given to the student respondents, who will
then respond to the questions by checking the appropriate box next to the respective
column's question. As previously indicated, the information gathered from
respondents will be arranged, totaled, calculated, and shown in a collection of
tables. In order to analyze and interpret the data, it will be used to examine the
students' responses, which will serve as the foundation for class reporting and
demonstration can improve their public speaking as perceive by 3rd year beed
student.
