The Mythological
Most people make the unfortunate mistake of
assuming that “mythological” means “ancient” or “no
longer in existence, if, in fact, it ever existed at all.”
Some believe that “mythological” means “harmless,”
as in the case of mermaids or unicorns where beauty
and charm blind the watcher to sharp fangs or blood-
ied hooves. Worst of all are those who conclude that
“mythological” means “made up”: these poor souls nev-

recent case is spread out on the desk before me, staring up at me

now than you were when you sat down.” The photographs show
no spirit orbs, the voice recordings are absolutely silent, and there
hasn’t been a single instance of freezing temperatures or ghostly
writing to tell me what it is I’m dealing with.
I stand, ready to admit defeat, and something outside
catches my attention. The sun has barely begun to rise, and
everything is cast in gray and pink, but there’s no mistaking
that there’s someone standing in my front yard. They’re staring
back at me, and I don’t know how I can tell through the
darkness, but I feel their gaze on me. I’m unnerved enough to
consider calling the police, but then that thing screams, and I
feel myself slipping toward unconsciousness once again.
