IwanttotelltheworldthatElSalvadorisgoingthroughoneofthemostdramaticdisastersinits history,PresidentMauricioFunessaidonnationalradioandtelevisionWednesdaynight,ashe appealedforinternationalaid.AweekoftorrentialrainsacrossCentralAmericahavetriggered extremefloodsandlandslidesthathavekilled105people,accordingtomediareports.ElSalvador, Guatemala,HondurasandNicaraguahavedeclaredstatesofemergencyduetothedisaster.El SalvadorandGuatemalahaveseentheworstflooding,with34and38peoplekilled,respectively. Another18havediedinHonduras,13inNicaragua,and5inCostaRica.Therainswereduetoa largeareaoflowpressurethatwasmoistenedbythelandfallofTropicalDepression12Enearthe Mexico/Guatemalaborderlastweek. ContributingtotherecordintensityrainswereoceantemperaturesoffthecoastofElSalvador thatwere0.51CaboveaverageduringthefirsthalfofOctober,allowingmorewatervapor thanusualtoevaporateintotheair.Overthepasttendays,rainfallamountsofoverameter (39.4)havefallenoveralargeareaofsouthwestElSalvador(Figure2.)AtHuizucar,anastonishing 1.513meters(4.96feet)ofrainfellinthepasttendays.

ClimatologistKevinTrenberthexplainedthedelugewarmingconnectioninaninterviewwith ClimateProgresslastyear:Ifinditsystematicallytendstogetunderplayedanditoftengets underplayedbymyfellowscientists.Becauseoneoftheopeningstatements,whichImsureyouve probablyheardisWellyoucantattributeasingleeventtoclimatechange.Butthereisa systematicinfluenceonalloftheseweathereventsnowadaysbecauseofthefactthatthereis thisextrawatervaporlurkingaroundintheatmospherethanthereusedtobesay30yearsago. Itsabouta4%extraamount,itinvigoratesthestorms,itprovidesplentyofmoistureforthese stormsanditsunfortunatethatthepublicisnotassociatingthesewiththefactthatthisisone manifestationofclimatechange.Andtheprospectsarethatthesekindsofthingswillonlyget biggerandworseinthefuture. TheAFPreportsthatmanyinCentralAmericadounderstandtheconnectionbetweenwarmingand deluging:Officialshaveblamedtheeffectsofglobalwarmingforthespateofdeadlyrainsand flooding.Climatechangeisnotsomethingthatiscominginthefuture,wearealreadysufferingits effects,saidRaulArtigawiththeCentralAmericanCommissiononEnvironmentandDevelopment (CCAD).
