DAYLIGHT APERTURES
Designing appropriate apertures such as windows,
skylights, light wells, and clerestories helps in harnessing
natural light effectively. Different types of apertures can
be strategically placed based on the building's
orientation and the path of the sun to optimize daylight
penetration into the interior spaces.

LIGHT SHELVES AND REFLECTIVE SURFACES
Light shelves are horizontal surfaces installed above windows to reflect sunlight deeper into
the interior spaces while shading the windows from direct sunlight. Reflective surfaces such
as light-colored walls, ceilings, and flooring can also bounce natural light further into the
room, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

SOLAR TUBES
These channel sunlight from the roof through a narrow
opening. During the day, they look like ordinary ceiling
lamps, but they are powered by the sun rather than
electricity. These work well when placed directly above
desks, where people need plenty of light.

ABOUT
The Solar Passive Complex heralds the beginning of the energy
efficiency movement in non-domestic buildings such as offices,
educational institutions, and factories. The Solar Passive Complex
in Chandigarh is a unique and successful model of an Energy
Efficient Solar Building. It is designed on solar passive architecture
with partial financial support from the Ministry of New &
Renewable Energy, GOI, and the Department of Science,
Technology, Environment and Non-conventional Energy,
Government of Punjab.

LIGHT WELLS
The light well is a vertical shaft or void that
extends from the roof to the ground floor,
allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the
building's interior spaces.
The light well serves as a passive daylighting
strategy by capturing and channeling natural light
into the building's core. Its design allows sunlight
to filter through the open space, creating a bright
and well-lit environment within the office.
