Reading Comprehension
I. Read the following text 10 marks.
(1) In the early 1920s, settlers came to Alaska looking for gold. They travelled by boat to the coastal
towns of Seaward and Knik, and from there by land into the gold fields. The trail they used to travel
inland is known today as the Iditarod Trail, one of the National Historic Trails designated by the
Congress of the United States. The Iditarod Trail quickly became a major thoroughfare in Alaska,
as the mail and supplies were carried across this trail. People also used it to get from place to place,
including the priests, ministers and judges who had to travel between villages. In the winter, the
settlers 's only means of travel down this trail was via dog sled.
(2) Once the gold rush ended, many gold- seekers went back to where they had come from, and suddenly
there was much less travel on the Iditarod Trail. The introduction of the airplane in the late 1920s
meant dog teams were no longer the standard mode of transportation, and of course with the airplane
carrying the mail and supplies, there was less need for land travel in general. The final blow to the
use of the dog teams was the appearance of snowmobiles.
(3) By the mid1960s, most Alaskans didn't even know the Iditarod Trail existed, or that dog teams had
played a crucial role in Alaska's early settlement. Dorothy G Page, a self-made historian, recognized
how few people knew about the former use of sled dogs as working animals and about the Iditarod
Trail’s role in Alaska’s colourful history. To raise awareness about this aspect of Alaskan history,
she came up with the idea to have a dog sled race over the Iditarod Trail. She presented her idea to
an enthusiastic musher, as dog sled drivers are known, named Joe Redington. Soon the Pages and
Redingtons were working together to promote the idea of the Iditarod race. Many people worked to
make the first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race a reality in 1967.
(4) The Aurora Dog Mushers Club, along with men from the Adult camp in Sutton, helped clear years
of overgrowth from the first nine miles of the Iditarod Trail. To raise interest in the race a $25,000
prize was offered, with Joe Redington donating one acre of his land to help raise the funds. The short
race, approximately 27 miles long, was put on a second time in 1969. After these first two successful
races, the goal was to lengthen the race a little further to the ghost town of Iditarod by 1973.

2. Read the following passage. 10 marks.

1. Your burger or pizza could be cooked anywhere by anyone-which is what makes the ghost kitchen
concept so lucrative to both owners and investors.
2. The goal of these virtual restaurants (for the franchisor and the franchisee) is no different from any
other business; to maximize profit and minimize overhead. Why operate one restaurant in your
kitchen when you can operate many? The space, the equipment and the cooks are there. Never
mind if they suddenly have to execute all those extra menus. Does their pay increase? Will ghost
kitchens add more staff to accommodate the increasing volume? These questions are danced
around.
3. An owner says,” I want the franchisee to make money, so we need to optimize the cost to optimize
the revenue. So if the franchisee needs a new chef or new equipment or more tools for prep, then
for sure they should invest to grow their revenue. But usually my approach and the company's
approach is to optimize the current need and the current team. We are not here to invest in more
space or in bigger teams.

A smartphone that stands between the diners and the cooks, make the workforce invisible (before
anyone knew what a ghost kitchen was) and hides its exploitation in the form of low wages, long
hours and various forms of abuse. This was exacerbated during COVID, especially for non -whites.
According to a study, Hispanic and Latino cooks and service workers in Massachusetts died of
COVID-19 at a rate eight times higher than white workers. Add to that the well documented
exploitation of the countless drivers who work for the delivery apps. The apps invested $200
million into a ballot measure to deny drivers employment protections. Then there are robotic
companies that are trying to straight up replace workers in ghost kitchens entirely in the future.

A. Let me put it more clearly, since no one will believe that a thirteen-year-old girl is completely alone
in the world. And I’m not. I have loving parents and a sixteen-year-old sister, and there are about
thirty people I can call friends. I have a family, loving aunts and a good home. No, on the surface I
seem to have everything, except my one true friend. All I think about when I’m with friends is having
a good time. I can’t bring myself to talk about anything but ordinary everyday things. We don’t seem
to be able to get any closer, and that’s the problem. Maybe it’s my fault that we don’t confide in each
other. In any case, that’s just how things are, and unfortunately, they’re not liable to change. This is
why I’ve started the diary. To enhance the image of this long-awaited friend in my imagination, I
don’t want to jot down the facts in this diary the way most people would do, but I want the diary to
