What is an eating
disorder?
An eating disorder is a mental health
condition characterized by problematic
and harmful patterns of behavior
related to eating and body image.
These conditions affect not only the
way people relate to food, but also
their physical, emotional, and social
health.

1. Anorexia nervosa: It is characterized by extreme restriction
of food intake, an intense fear of gaining weight and a
distorted perception of one's body.
2. Bulimia nervosa: Involves recurrent episodes of excessive
food intake followed by compensatory behaviors, such as
self-induced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, or
intensive exercise.
3. Binge eating disorder: Similar to bulimia nervosa in terms of
episodes of excessive eating, but in this case there are no
compensatory behaviors.
4. Selective or avoidant eating disorder: Characterized by limited
food selection and a persistent aversion to certain types of foods
or textures.

it?
Genetics and Biology:
Genetic predisposition can increase vulnerability.
Alterations in neurotransmitters and brain function.
Psychological factors:
Low Self-Esteem: Dissatisfaction with body image and
low self-esteem.
Perfectionism: The relentless pursuit of perfection.
Social and Cultural Pressures:
Beauty Ideals: Cultural standards can generate pressure
towards certain ideals of thinness.
Weight Stigma: Discrimination based on weight.
Traumatic Experiences:
Abuse: Traumatic experiences, such as abuse.
