34 Our impact can be striking. Fifteen years of Crisis Group engagement – and readiness to champion
difficult compromises – helped seal the 2016 Colombia peace accord.
35 I consider that investing in conflict prevention pays dividends. […] Doing business around the
world, we’ve all seen how vital security and stability are. […] Crisis Group is important and fills an
important niche.

41 So we talked intently about the need to put on a long-term footing what we had tried to do to raise
the siege of Sarajevo: strong advocacy on behalf of victims accompanied by first class analysis of
what the policy options were that might tempt governments out of their caution and enable them
to engage around realizable solutions.
42 What remained though was an extraordinary organization that has become an astonishing voice,
force and analyst for the world’s vulnerable: their champion, their diplomat and our conscience.
43 “What you are trying to do is to get us give you a golden stick with which to beat us over the head
in order to get us do what we’ve already decided we do not want to.”
44 But in this job, one could be disheartened so often, when you see the lack of will to act from our
governments when they could make a difference.

This paper deals with the gender variable in realization of directive speech acts, such as requests,
suggestions, advice etc. The sample for this small-scale research consists of 328 instances of
directive speech acts which are excerpted from the transcripts of selected dialogues of the
popular US sitcom Friends and five American feature-length films. Directive speech acts are
analyzed using Blum-Kulka et al’s classification (1989) and divided into three broad categories
– direct, conventionally indirect, and non-conventionally indirect with many subcategories.
The focus of this paper will be on direct strategies typically expressed with imperatives and on
conventionally indirect directives usually expressed with interrogative sentences which include
a suggestory formula and preparatory strategies, with special emphasis on their use in male and
female language. The goal of the paper is to analyze and compare gender preferences in using
different strategies for the realization of directives, with the assumption that women will be
more thoughtful of the hearer’s face and use indirect forms more frequently than men. This
is in line with Holmes’s (1995) characterization of women’s speech as more polite than men’s.
The paper will analyze the use of these directive strategies in F-F interactions, M-M interac-
tions, M-F interactions and F-M interactions. The illustrative examples will be analyzed using
the theory of speech acts and politeness theory, using qualitative, quantitative and comparative
research methods.

Perović 1996, 2009, Panić Kavgić 2021).
The goal of this paper is to analyze this class of speech acts from
the perspective of gender in order to determine whether gender plays any
role in opting for direct or indirect strategies in realization of directive
speech acts, or to determine what are the preferences of the two genders
in the realization of directive speech acts. The findings will be related
to the politeness theory which is frequently used in pragmatic research
to explain why certain strategies are more preferable than others. After
briefly presenting the theoretical framework and the methodology used,
the analysis of the results will be summarized.
2. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
John Austin was the founder of speech act theory, which is the main
theoretical framework of this analysis (Austin 1962). Austin focuses on
language use and stresses that to say something means to do something.
His book How to Do Things with Words was the foundation for other
researchers who started to investigate the speech act phenomenon – in
the first place John Searle whose contribution to the speech act theory is
very important (Searle 1969, 1975). Austin divided speech acts into three
main parts: locution (the very act of speaking), illocution (the intention
a speaker wants to achieve) and perlocution (the effect an utterance has
on the hearer – Austin 1962: 108). This paper focuses on locution and
illocution of an utterance with special emphasis on gender preferences in
making a directive speech act.
Searle classified speech acts into five classes – directive, assertive,
commissive, expressive, and declaration (Searle 1969). He also introduced
some important concepts about the realization of each of them, such as
illocutionary force indicating device. The main purpose of device is to
determine what the illocution of an utterance is. In order for an utterance
to be considered directive, preparatory conditions, sincerity conditions
and essential conditions must be fulfilled. In other words, a speaker makes
an utterance that a hearer will attempt to carry out but the speaker has to
make sure that the hearer is capable of and willing to execute the activity
contained in the proposition of the utterance, but will not do so unless
explicitly or implicitly asked to. The speaker should really want the activity
to be realized. And finally, essential conditions refer to the attempt to make
the hearer perform the activity. It is when these conditions are fulfilled
that we can say that the utterance is of a directive type.
Directive speech acts are considered face-threatening acts (FTA)
because by verbalizing a directive utterance a speaker imposes his or her
will on the hearer, thus threatening the hearer’s face which is “the public
self-image that every member wants to claim for himself” (Brown and
Levinson 1987: 61). There are two ways to appeal to the hearer’s face –
positive and negative. A positive face refers to the individual’s needs to be
accepted, admired and loved by others and that his accomplishments are
recognized and appreciated, whereas a negative face is a person’s desire not
to be imposed upon by others in any possible sense and to have freedom
of action. Therefore we can distinguish between positive and negative
politeness. Brown and Levinson stated that a compromise in doing FTA is
reached in conventionalized indirectness (Brown and Levinson 1987: 70).
They believe that an act is more polite when realized in the most indirect
way. However, this attitude has been vastly criticized by post-modern
researchers. Watts, for instance, writes about politic (appropriate) and
non-politic (inappropriate) verbal behavior and does not believe that direct
strategies can be labeled as polite or impolite, because any strategy or
remark can be acceptable when uttered under the appropriate situational
and cultural circumstances (Watts 2005).
Another important factor that makes a difference during the
realization of directive speech acts is social distance. According to
Wolfson’s bulge model of interaction, there are two extremes of social
distance – minimum and maximum that share similar verbal behavior and
interlocutors on these two extremes tend to make clear and unambiguous
directive messages. These two ends include persons who know each other
well (close friends, relatives, family members and so on) and those who
do not know each other at all. On the hand, interlocutors positioned more
towards the center of these two extremes (persons who do not know
each other well such as acquaintances) show marked difference and they
are more considerate in preserving face as a result of their uncertain
relationships (Wolfson 1988:32).

frequently than British men, but both British and Uruguayan men employ
imperatives more often than women. When cross-gender interactions are
concerned, it has been noticed that Uruguayan men employ a higher level
of imperatives than their British counterparts, whereas Uruguayan women
are more indirect when interacting with members of the opposite and more
direct in interaction with other women. In her study of indirect requests
for information, Macaulay uses audio-visual data, obtained in interviews.
The author concludes that men utilize imperatives as a means to ask tough
questions, maintain a line of questioning, and maintain their positions of
power in the interview (Macaulay 2001). This paper will attempt to provide
an answer to the question who uses direct or indirect strategies in issuing
directives more frequently and whether this choice is a matter of gender
at all.

activity. Query preparatory on the other hand, question the hearer’s ability,
possibility and willingness to perform an activity. Both these subtypes are
usually expressed in interrogative sentences; therefore there is a mismatch
between a syntactic form and the discourse function.
When non-conventional directives are concerned, they include
strong and mild hints. The context is of great importance in determining
the illocutionary force of the utterances verbalized in various syntactic
forms.

Summary / This paper deals with the analysis of idioms containing the lexeme “eye”
in the Italian, Spanish and Serbian languages. Since somatic idioms, especially those
with the lexeme “eye”, represent a large part of the phraseological fund of three
languages, only those idioms that express attention/caution were analyzed. Italian
was the source language, whereas Spanish and Serbian are the target languages. The
initial hypothesis was that two typologically related languages (Italian
and Spanish)
would share more common phraseological characteristics in comparison to typologi-
cally unrelated language (Serbian).
In order to prove the hypothesis from general and phraseological dictionaries, as well
as from electronic sources, a research corpus was excerpted. Using the method of
contrastive analysis, similarities and differences were identified from lexical, semantic
and morphosyntactic aspects in order to establish the type of equivalence between
the idioms at the interlingual level. The type of equivalence was determined for 22
idioms containing the lexeme “eye” in Italian, 19 in Spanish and 17 in Serbian. By
contrasting the Italian and Spanish idioms, it can be concluded that there is absolute
equivalence between 10 idioms, 5 of them form a relationship of partial equivalence
with morphosyntactic differences, 2 a relationship of partial equivalence with lexical
differences, 1 a relationship of partial equivalence with morphosyntactic and lexi-
cal differences, zero equivalence is established between 3 idioms, and 1 false friend
isidentified. On the other hand, the comparison of Italian and Serbian idioms gave
the following results: 7 absolute equivalents, 4 partial equivalents with morphosyn-
tactic differences, 5 partial equivalents with lexical differences, 1 partial equivalent
with morphosyntactic and lexical differences, while zero equivalence was recorded
in 5 cases, and there were no false friends. It can be seen that in both Spanish and
Serbian, the highest percentage of idioms are absolute equivalents with their Italian
correspondent, although that percentage is lower in Serbian than in Spanish.
Therefore, it can be concluded that the initial hypothesis has been proven, ie. that
typologically related languages share more common phraseological characteristics.

However, the number of partial equivalents between Italian and Serbian is very high.
This can be explained by the fact that somatic idioms, due to the universality of bod-
ily experience, reveal similarities between languages that
do not belong to the same
language family. The existence of universal human knowledge and associations about
body parts explains the existence of somatisms that have the same or similar structure
and meaning in different languages. On the other hand, although the human body
has the same functions in all languages, their symbolism is culturally determined
(Kovačević, 2012: 16-17), and that could explain the existence of zero equivalence
and false friends at the interlingual level.

In this paper, two works of science fiction, distanced from each other both spatially and tem-
porally (as they belong to different national literatures) are analysed: Orwell’s novel 1984 and
Darko Macan’s and Tatjana Jambrišak’s short story „Besmrtni slučaj“ (“An Immortal Case”), as
an example of Croatian science fiction from the 2000s. This research is focused on the ways in
which these respective authors textually construct emotions within the framework of a fictional
perspectivisation of the future. Contemporary constructivist approaches to the emotions show
that they are an important part of cognitive processes and also culturally conditioned entities.
This work proves that emotional constructs of the future can be taken into consideration when
dealing with the basic genre characteristics of science fiction. This means that they participate
in the creation of a conceptual breakthrough of the paradigm of our episteme, that they are
a part of cognitive estrangement, or of the fictional novum validated by epistemic logic. Thus,
this topic, when approaching science fiction, despite the national literature or period to which
such a work may belong, may contribute to further research regarding the possible cultural
conditions of the emotions of the future, as well as furthering knowledge on the characteristics
of the genre of modern science fiction.
Key words: literary emotionology, emotions, emotional constructs, science fiction, Orwell, Macan,
Jambrišak, cognitive estrangement, conceptual breakthrough, fictional novum

our concepts of them3 (Hogan 2003:15); and yet, literature has long been
absent from the interdisciplinary research of the emotions, especially when
regarding science fiction, despite the fact that one of its greatest theorists,
Darko Suvin, noted that „it is not possible to conceive a single conceptually
and semantically clear expression in science fiction which does not seek
and generate explicated emotions“ (2012:66). Science fiction, at its best,
presents a world in which the paradigm has shifted, both the scientific and
cultural paradigm, i.e., those that influence life entirely, human civilisation
(Šakić 2006:15). The primary formal procedure in science fiction is a
„narrative chronotope and/or actors different from the author’s empirical
world“ (Suvin 2009: 175), and this difference is often made explicit on the
psychological plane of their formation, i.e., in the ways in which authors
construe their actors’ emotions.
Using two texts, distanced both spatially and temporally as examples,
George Orwell’s 1984 (from 1949) and the short-story „Besmrtni slučaj“
(„The Immortal Case“) by the Croatian writers Darko Macan and Tatjana
Jambrišak (from 2008), within the methodological framework provided
by the emotionological approach to literature4, the constructs of emotions
with which these authors represent an imaginary model of the world of the
future will be analysed. Further topics of research are; the expression of
emotions and/or feelings in a science fiction literary text, the strategies of
their representation (cf. Brković 2015:406), as well as their effects within
the defined characteristics of the science fiction genre; among the first,
cognitive estrangement, the formation of the novum and the conceptual
breakthrough. At the centre of this research the six basic universal
emotions according to Ekman’s model will be cited: these being happiness,
3 The emotions are no longer approached in scholarship as exclusively biological and physiological
phenomena, but from a constructivist perspective within the frame of cultural models and cogni-
tive processes, and this has been the case for several decades. Batja Mesquita’s and Nico H. Frijda’s
cultural model does not present the emotions as unified entities but as a process comprised of se-
quences: concerns – appraisal - physiological changes – action readiness – behavioural expression
– regulation (1992:180). The role of the way a society is really organised is of great importance on
the process of an individual’s emotions and presents an important source of cultural differences in
emotional phenomena. (Mesquita, Frijda, 1992: 201). Ekman and Cordaro define emotions as „dis-
crete physiological responses to fundamental life situations that have been useful in our ancestral
environment“ (2011:364), yet the influence of culture is present in the way in which we present
every emotion and this in the language for an emotion and in attitudes toward an emotion. It has
been proven that there are great emotional differences regarding this, to the extent that not every
culture has the concepts for the seven emotions for which there is proof that they are universally
the strongest (Ekman, Cordaro 2011:369). Sara Ahmed, in The Cultural Politics of Emotion (2020)
relates pain, hate, fear, disgust, shame and love with gender, race and sexuality when analysing
the “emotionality of texts”. The cognitive model relates emotions, cognition and the formation of
consciousness. According to Damasio, emotions in all likelihood assist logical thinking and making
logical conclusions, especially in personal and social situations that include risk and conflict. Yet
the emotions are not a replacement for the understanding, nor do the emotions decide instead of
us. (Damasio, 2005:51)
4 „Emotionology: the attitudes or standards that a society, or a definable group within a society,
maintains toward basic emotions and their appropriate expression; ways that institutions reflect
and encourage these attitudes in human conduct (…)“ (Stearns, 1985:813)
5 This has been selected for methodological reasons, although the model of basic or universal emo-
tions was expanded later in the work of Robert Plutchik (1980) for example: – acceptance, anger,
anticipation, disgust, joy, fear, sadness, surprise; Ekman (1972) and Friesen and Ellsworth (1982)
– anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, surprise; Frijda (1986) – desire, happiness, interest, surprise,
wonder, sorrow; Gray (1985) – rage, terror, anxiety, joy; Izard (1977) – anger, contempt, disgust,
distress, fear, guilt, interest, joy, shame, surprise; Oatley and Johnson-Laird (1987) – anger, disgust,
anxiety, happiness, sadness; Panksepp (1982) – expectancy, fear, rage, panic; Tomkins (1984) –
anger, interest, contempt, disgust, distress, fear, joy, shame, surprise; Weiner and Graham (1984)
– happiness, sadness. (see: Kovačević, Ramadanović, 2016:507). In this work, as may be necessary,
Ekman’s basic model will be supplemented by the universal emotions from other models.
6 According to Schwarz-Friesel the textual manifestation of emotions can be exemplified by
perspectivisation, i.e., the presentation of matters of fact from a certain perspective (2007:212, cit.
in: Čović-Filipović, 2016:36)
7 „The cultural meaning system that constitutes the concept of emotion has been invisible because we
have assumed that it is possible to identify the essence of emotion, that the emotions are universal,
and that they are separable from both their personal and social context“ (Lutz 1986:288)

well as from one from which he/she imagines will appear in future, which,
thus, he/she contextualises in place and the moment in which he/she
sets the plot; both directions, thus, become a part of the estranged actor
and chronotope of science fiction. We will elaborate precisely this other
emotional construct, the emotions of the future, in this work.

„Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind
simultaneously (…) The Party intellectual knows (…) that he is playing tricks
with reality (…). The process has to be conscious, or it would not be carried out
with sufficient precision, but it also has to be unconscious, or it would bring with
it a feeling of falsity and hence of guilt.“ (Orwell 1992:223)

with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a
porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of
holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the
holes had let in the water. audience shouting with laughter when he sank. then
you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a
middleaged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little
boy about three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding
his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the
woman putting her arms round him and comforting him up as much as possible as
if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted
a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood,
then there was a wonderfull shot of a child’s arm going up up up right up into the
air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have follwed it up and there was
a lot of applause from the party seats (…)“ (Orwell 1992:10-11)13

„Winston had disliked her from the very first moment of seeing her. He knew
the reason. It was because of the atmosphere of hockey-fields and cold baths and
community hikes and general clean-mindedness which she managed to carry
about with her. He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty
ones“ (Orwell 1992:12)
Because of this, and also the possibility that the girl is a member of
the Thought Police, Winston’s sexual awakening results in fear:
„Once when they passed in the corridor she had given him a quick sidelong glance
which seemed to pierce right into him and for a moment had filled him with black
terror. The idea had even crossed his mind that she might be an agent of the
Thought Police. (…) Still, he continued to feel a peculiar uneasiness, which had
fear mixed up in it as well as hostility, whenever she was anywhere near him.“
(Orwell 1992:12)
Pleasure is removed from the sexual act; „The aim of the Party was
not merely to prevent men and women from forming loyalties which it
might not be able to control. Its real, undeclared purpose was to remove
all pleasure from the sexual act“ (Orwell 1992:68). He was programmed
only to feel connected to a hate for the declared enemy. Thus, fear and
hate are a constituent part of every emotional construct in interpersonal
relations in members of the Party so that the love between Winston and
Julia is a subversive state and an act of the only possible resistance: „No
emotions was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred.
Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck
against the Party. It was a political act.“ (Orwell 1992:133)
Orwell uses the ritual of the Two Minutes of Hate to show in detail
how the emotions of the mass are modelled, and describe how they are
manifested, the mass’s physiological reactions and the individual’s
behaviour in a group. All members of society must stop their everyday
activities in order to collectively watch a film about Emmanuel Goldstein, the
enemy of the people. Orwell describes the methods of media manipulation
and the emotions it arouses - fear, rage and disgust. These are the basic
constituents of the Ritual of Hate, the purpose of which is to produce
a unitary collective emotion and hereby construct the consciousness of
every member of society regarding the projected construct of the enemy:
„The next moment a hideous, grinding screech, as of some monstrous
machine running without oil, burst from the big telescreen at the end of
the room. It was a noise that set one’s teeth on edge and bristled the hair at
the back of one’s neck. The Hate had started.“ (Orwell 1992:13); „The little
sandy-haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust.“ (Orwell
1992:13); „Winston’s diaphragm was constricted. He could never see the
face of Goldstein without a painful mixture of emotions.“ (Orwell 1992:14)
„The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look
of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the
suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear
an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was
announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence.“ (Orwell 1992:65)
Although there are those in the audience who can play out the
collective emotion on demand, Winston becomes aware of this emotion
as something manipulated, the impossibility, in this collective hysteria, to
resist this emotion which has been coerced by something outside of himself:
„The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to
act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds
any pretence was always unnecessary.“ (Orwell 1992:16) Meanwhile, he also
makes himself aware of the arbitrariness of the subject toward which the
individual in the crowd may direct such an emotion.
„And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could
be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp. Thus, at one
moment Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the
contrary, against Big Brother, the Party and the Thought Police (…)“ (Orwell
1992:16)

„He thought with a kind of astonishment of the biological uselessness of pain and
fear, the treachery of the human body which always freezes into inertia at exactly
the moment when a special effort is needed. (…)It struck him that in moments of
crisis one is never fighting against an external enemy, but always against one’s own
body. (…) because the body swells up until it fills the universe, and even when you
are nor paralysed by fright or screaming with pain, life is a moment-to-moment
struggle against hunger or cold or sleeplessness, against a sour stomach or an
aching tooth.“ (Orwell 1992:106)
again. You were lifted clean out of the stream of history.“ (Orwell 1992:172)14
Unlike Wilson , the proles (the proletariat), i.e., the poor, uneducated
majority of Oceania’s population, is not under the Party’s constant
surveillance, and this class of citizens has preserved the emotions of
the past (the author’s present). By contrasting Winston’s manufactured
emotions, and the spontaneous emotions of the proles, Orwell presents the
change in status of human emotionality as the core of a shifted paradigm
of humanity, leading his protagonist to the realisation that he is no longer
human:
„The proles had stayed human. They had not become hardened inside. They
had held on to the primitive emotions which he himself had to re-learn by
conscious effort. And in thinking this he remembered, without apparent
relevance, how a few weeks ago he had seen a severed hand lying on the
pavement and had kicked it into the gutter as though it had been a cabbage-
stalk.
- The proles are human beings, – he said aloud. – We are not human.-„ (Orwell
1992:172-3)
14 Winston will be tricked by the party precisely because, although he knows the extent to which it
can control an individual’s thoughts and emotions, he didn’t foresee that the party would pander to
him in order to entrap him: „‘I am with you.’ O’Brien seemed to be saying to him. ‘I know precisely what
you are feeling. I know all about your contempt, your hatred, your disgust. But don’t worry, I am on your
side.’“ (Orwell 1992:19)

with Orwell, here we see an example of how the construct of the emotions
of the future (happiness and envy toward dying) includes the procedure of
cognitive estrangement; also, how the world of the future is emotionally
and cognitively estranged when compared to that of the author’s (and the
reader’s, in as much as it is temporally close to the author’s) empirical
world:
„Those on the bridge jumped. Everyone. The rope tightened, necks bent silently.
And the audience held its breath. (…) One body remained hanging. A corpse. The
winner of the first round of the first game. His name colourfully shone on the
jumbo-sized terminal above the bridge. The audience in the grandstands cheered
with relief and no small envy for the winner of the valuable prize. (…) A lucky
fellow, without a doubt.“ (Jambrišak, Macan 2008: 25)
„Mandrake couldn’t recall a single reason why he should keep on living. He slid the
knife along the vein under his left wrist and watched as the wound healed almost
before it opened. One group of nanorobots repaired the wound, the other turned
pain into a pleasurable tingling. Mandrake wanted to cut off all his fingers, yet
that experience, because of its futility, was also frustrating the first few times.
Not a single reason why he should live another millennium, another day. Nor
any way in which to die.“ (Jambrišak, Macan 2008: 26)

„He was Ibli, the Planetmaker, and it was exactly this morning – was it exactly
this morning and when was this morning exactly? – he had begun work on a new
project. ‘Ho-ho!’, he laughed as he understood whose time it may be: the time of a
new planet! ‘I am to be a mother again, Ibli happily thought to himself, digging his
fists into the earth. ‘What will I call this one?“ (Jambrišak, Macan 2008: 29-30)

The article aims to explore whether the text of Philip K. Dick’s Ubik constructs a natural (physi-
cally possible) or a supernatural (physically impossible) fictional world. According to Darko Suvin,
one of the fundamental traits of science fiction is that its texts construct natural, physically
possible fictional worlds. Readers of science fiction have often complained of Ubik, regarding
it a confusing work, riddled with supernatural impurities and a lack of precise explanations.
The betrayal of these expectations often casts doubt on whether this novel is science-fictional
or a work of fantasy. If we aim to determine whether the fictional world of Ubik belongs to the
possible worlds of science fiction, the theoretical framework for such a task can be found in
Lubomir Doležel’s possible worlds theory. To do this, we must analyze the alethic constraints
of the given fictional world, for those narrative modalities govern the formation of the fic-
tional world’s physical laws and determine what is possible, impossible and necessary within
its boundaries. If our analysis shows that the alethic constraints present in Ubik are analogous
to the physical laws of the real world, we will prove that this fictional world is physically pos-
sible and therefore possesses one of the fundamental traits of science fiction, naturalness. If
our analysis shows otherwise, the fictional world of Ubik can be relegated to the supernatural,
physically impossible worlds of fantasy.

of both the readers’ and the critics’ expectations raises the question of
whether the novel should be considered science fictional. However, in
Dick’s defence, Lem states that “[t]he forces which bring about world
debacle in Dick’s books are fantastic, but they are not merely invented ad
hoc to shock the readers” (1975: 57).
If we aim to determine whether the fictional world of Ubik belongs
to the possible worlds of science fiction, the theoretical framework for
the task can be found in Lubomir Doležel’s possible worlds theory. To do
so, we must analyze the alethic constraints of the given fictional world,
which Doležel explains in Heterocosmica: Fiction and Possible Worlds: “The
alethic modalities of possibility, impossibility and necessity determine
the fundamental conditions of fictional worlds, especially causality, time-
space parameters, and the action capacity of persons” (1998: 115). As
Doležel expounds in Possible Worlds of Fiction and History: The Postmodern
Stage, alethic constraints determine the way fictional characters exist
and act within a possible world of fiction: “The conditions of existence
and acting in a possible world are critically dependent on whether it is a
physically possible or physically impossible world” (2010: 32). There are
two categories of alethic constraints. Codexal alethic modalities are a set of
“restrictions imposed on a world as a whole” (Doležel 1998: 118). Subjective
alethic modalities are “[t]he sum of a person’s physical, instrumental,
and mental capacities” which “constitutes his or her alethic endowment”
(1998: 118). The alethic endowment of a fictional person is considered
“normal when it corresponds to the human standard […] hyponormal if
the person suffers some deprivation” whereas if “a person’s endowment,
while not transcending the alethic conditions of the natural world, is above
the standard, is hypernormal” (1998: 118). According to Doležel, “[i]f the
modalities of the actual world determine what is possible, impossible, and
necessary in the fictional world, then a natural fictional world is formed”
(1998: 115). The fictional characters inhabiting those worlds “are possible
counterparts of humans” whereas “their properties and action capacities
are fictional projections of actual persons’ attributes” (1998: 115). The
most notable example of such worlds is found in realistic fiction. Realistic
worlds are natural (physically possible) worlds, generating “stories of the
human condition” (1998: 117). Alternatively, if the alethic constraints of
fictional worlds “violate the laws of the actual world” we are faced with
“physically impossible, supernatural worlds” (1998: 115). Examples of such
fictional realities can be found in myth, fairytales, and fantastic literature,
because “what is impossible in the natural world becomes possible in its
supernatural counterpart” (1998: 115). Furthermore, there exists another
type of possible world, the intermediate world, which bridges “[t]he
alethic contrast between the natural and the supernatural” (1998: 117).
As Doležel points out, “[d]reams, hallucination, madness, drug-induced
altered states are physically possible, natural human experiences” even
though “physically impossible persons, objects, and events appear in these

Philip K. Dick’s Ubik: a Natural Possible World of Science Fiction or a Supernatural Possible World of Fantasy?
frames” (1998: 117). A significant part of the action in Ubik takes place in
such a possible reality.
In his book Metamorphoses of Science Fiction: On the Poetics and
History of a Literary Genre, Suvin defines science fiction as a genre
“whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of
estrangement and cognition, and whose main formal device is an imaginary
framework alternative to the author’s empirical environment” (1979: 7-8).
Suvin differentiates science fiction from other literary genres through
the presence of a novum: “SF is distinguished by the narrative dominance
or hegemony of a fictional ‘novum’ (novelty, innovation) validated by cognitive
logic” (1979: 63). The novelty or innovation is “so central and significant
that it determines the whole narrative logic – regardless of any impurities
that might be present” (1979: 70). In the possible worlds of science
fiction, we recognize Doležel’s natural or physically possible worlds. The
reason behind this is that “[i]t is intrinsically or by definition impossible
for SF to acknowledge any metaphysical agency, in the literal sense of an
agency going beyond physis (nature)” (Suvin 1979: 63). To show this, we
shall point out the similarities between Suvin’s and Doležel’s theoretical
considerations in terms of the distinction between the natural, physically
possible fictional worlds, and the supernatural ones. Unlike the “non-
naturalistic, metaphysical literary genres”, such as “the folktale and the
fantasy”, where the physical “circumstances around the hero are neither
passive nor neutral”, making those worlds physically impossible, science
fiction cannot support the existence of supernatural agency: “The world of
a work of SF is not a priori intentionally oriented towards its protagonists,
either positively or negatively; the protagonists may succeed or fail in
their objectives, but nothing in the basic contract with the reader, in the
physical laws of their worlds, guarantees either” (1979: 11). In such genres,
e.g., science fiction, however strong the obstacles the characters face may
seem, they are nevertheless natural and surmountable. The fictional worlds
constructed by those texts are therefore physically possible (natural). In
contrast, according to Doležel’s categorization, the fictional worlds where
outcomes are predetermined by the will of supernatural and therefore
insurmountable agencies are physically impossible (supernatural):
“Supernatural beings often embody the nature force, so that intentionless
causation of events in the natural world becomes intentional acting in its
supernatural counterpart” (1998: 116). Of course, those are ideal categories.
In practice, various impurities from neighbouring fictional domains can
often be found in specific stories, e.g., supernatural elements from the
worlds of fantastic literature in the natural worlds of science fiction. In
The Boundaries of Realism in World Literature2, Kornelije Kvas explains how
fantastic elements function in natural fictional worlds using the category
of inventiveness in realistic literature: “[I]f a fictional world still functions

the way we assume the real world functions, and if this assumption is
supported by natural laws, then the existence of fictional entities and
events that are alien to the real world does not violate its coherence” (2020:
17). Inventiveness is an element of realistic fiction that can be passed on
to science fiction since the texts of both genres construct their fictional
worlds as physically possible. If the abovementioned demand is met, the
presence of fantastic elements in either realistic or science fictional texts
will not violate their logic and verisimilitude.

Philip K. Dick’s Ubik: a Natural Possible World of Science Fiction or a Supernatural Possible World of Fantasy?
that the alethic world of the primary reality in Ubik is analogous to the real
world.
One of the instances when the world of Ubik seemingly diverges from
the logic of the real world is the presence of half-life. From the readers’
perspective, the possibility of communication with the dead undermines
the scientific worldview. Such fictional possibilities lead the reader to
conclude that the fictional events take place, not in a natural, but in a
supernatural fictional world. Nevertheless, such a conclusion would be
wrong. Half-life is not a phenomenon that can undermine the naturalness
of its fictional reality. The fictional technique of cold-pac is based on real-
world knowledge: “The idea is not altogether absurd in terms of scientific
facts: the concept of freezing the incurably ill to await the time when
remedies for their diseases will be found has already come in for serious
discussion” (Lem 1975: 58). However, both in Ubik and in the real world,
death is irreversible: “It would also be possible in principle to maintain
vital processes in the person’s brain when the body dies (to be sure, that
brain would rapidly suffer psychological disintegration as a consequence
of sensory deprivation)” (1975: 58). These circumstances rob hibernation
of purpose. Why use hibernation if it does not preserve the human
consciousness and renders communication impossible? The dilemma is
fictionally presented through Runciter’s dialogue with the owner of the
moratorium his wife rests in: “She exists […]. She merely can’t contact
you. There’s a difference. / A metaphysical difference which means
nothing to me” (Dick 2004: 22). Ubik offers a solution to the dilemma.
Communication with the cryonically suspended is made fictionally possible,
thus giving hibernation purpose: “We know that stimulation of the brain
by electrodes produces in the subject of such an operation experiences
indistinguishable from ordinary perceptions. In Dick we find a perfect
extension of such techniques, though he does not discuss this explicitly
in the story” (Lem 1975: 58). That Dick does not provide explanations
for the fictional phenomena in Ubik cannot be considered a flaw which
endangers the naturalness of that possible reality. Finally, the split in the
perceived reality and the possibility of communication between the two
planes of existence constitutes the novum this science-fictional novel is
founded on. The logical consequences of such a novum problematize the
ontological relations between the different planes of the fictional universe
and reflect on all the aspects of their inhabitants’ lives. Having considered
the abovementioned, we agree with Lem’s opinion that “Dick’s novels in
some measure violate the conventions of SF, which can be accounted to
him as merit, because they thereby acquire broadened meanings having
allegorical import” (1975: 61). The subject of our analysis is not a scientific
text, but a work of fiction. Fiction is not to be taken literally. The purpose
of science fiction is cognitive, to present the reader with an estranged
reflection of human and social relations surrounding the author. As Lem
sees it, the presence of phenomena extraneous to the real world in Dick’s
Lipar / Journal for Literature, Language, Art and Culture / Year XXIV / Volume 82 111
Mirko Ž. Šešlak
novel should not be held against him “since the demand for absolute purity
of genres is becoming nowadays an anachronism in literature” (1975: 61).
If we analyze the alethic endowment of the inhabitants of the
primary reality in Ubik, we reach the following conclusions. A normal
alethic endowment is the standard of its primary reality. The exceptions to
the standard are not only the precognitive and telepathic abilities of certain
individuals but also the anti-talents of the inertials that annul them, thus
maintaining a natural balance: “The anti-psi factor is a natural restoration
of ecological balance” (Dick 2004: 30). The presence of such abilities in
the primary reality as commonplace is functionally related to the real
world’s consumer society. Analogous to the circumstances in our world,
all hypernormal alethic endowments are coopted and commercialized.
In The Alternative Realities of Philip K. Dick3, Mladen Jakovljević notices
the tendency: “The telepaths and precogs sell their services to companies,
which in turn sell them to their clients and advertise them in the media
just like any other commodity” (2015: 148). Bearing this in mind, we may
turn to Peter Fitting’s observation in “Reality as Ideological Construct: A
Reading of Five Novels by Philip K. Dick” that these abilities serve “not
to free, but to enslave; to maintain and secure an exploitative and unjust
system” (1983: 228)4. The trivialization of these endowments is another
reason that enables Ubik to function as an estranged reflection of the
negative tendencies in the real world. Therefore, the characters in Ubik
remain the human beings we know. As Andrew Mark Butler observes in
his doctoral dissertation Ontology and Ethics in the Writing of Philip K. Dick,
“[t]he characters’ relationships to their perceived (fictional) conditional
environment are analogous to the individual human being’s relationship to
their perceived (non-fictional) consensus environment” (1995: 46).
Although the hypernormal endowments shown in Ubik are not
present in the real world, the author described them as operating within
the natural alethic constraints. The ability of gifted individuals to glimpse
into the possible future timelines cannot be described as prophetic. The
predetermination present in supernatural possible worlds is absent: “The
precog sees a variety of futures, laid out side by side like cells in a beehive.
For him one has greater luminosity, and this he picks” (Dick 2004: 31-
32). From a precog’s perspective, the most luminous future is the timeline
with the greatest probability of becoming actualized. Such a precognitive
ability does not offer a glimpse into an inevitable future. Since the text of
the novel constructs the characters’ primary reality as physically possible,
there can be no predetermination. The naturalness of this fictional reality
is confirmed by the existence of anti-precognitive abilities cancelling out
the former and restoring the natural balance: “The anti-precog makes all
3 The book was published in Serbia in 2015, under the title Alternativne stvarnosti Filipa K. Dika.

4 Although Fitting primarily discusses The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, while Ubik only shortly,
his observation remains relevant.

Philip K. Dick’s Ubik: a Natural Possible World of Science Fiction or a Supernatural Possible World of Fantasy?
futures seem equally real to the precog; he aborts his talent to choose at all”
(Dick 2004: 32). Not even Pat Conley’s ability to change a precog’s choices
without them being aware of it does not violate the alethic constraints of
physically possible: “I can change the past but I don’t go into the past; I
don’t time-travel” (2004: 33). From the perspective of both the real and
the fictional world, travelling into the past is impossible. In a natural
world, cause-and-effect lead in but one direction, to the entropic end. We
experience the unidirectional movement towards the end as the flow of
time. Then how is it possible for Pat to change the future by changing the
past? The answer is that she does not.
Following the multiverse theory Jakovljević uses in his analysis of
Dick’s fiction, every possible outcome of any event becomes actualized. All
imaginable alternative timelines exist parallel to each other, branching out
per the choices of their inhabitants. Jakovljević compares this branching to
Borges’s “the garden of forking paths” (2015: 150). As Jakovljević claims,
unlike the precogs, Pat creates new future possibilities. Her talent is not
limited to choosing between the ones that already exist. Such an ability is
equal to the power to create forks in reality, “quantum effects, not in the
present, but in the past, creating and then actualizing new realities” (2015:
153). It may seem Jakovljević’s explanation sheds light on Pat’s ability.
However, it also unnecessarily introduces a potentially supernatural
element into the physically possible world of Ubik. The ability to create
new realities by changing past events seems not only supernatural but
also logically unnecessary. Pat’s talent is much simpler. Since the number
of alternative possible realities that continually branch out is limitless, it
would be logical that in some of those timelines, the events around the
protagonists have unfolded in a way Pat finds advantageous. There is no
need for Pat to create preferable outcomes because any imaginable outcome
already exists in one timeline or another. Her ability surpasses a precog’s
talent. A precog is bound to the most probable future possibility. Pat is
free to choose any possibility. Unlike the rest of the characters, trapped in
a single reality, Pat retains the bird’s-eye view of the novel’s universe of
alternative realities actualizing them at will. At Runciter’s insistence, she
demonstrates her talent by transporting both him and his inertials through
several timelines (Dick 2004: 57-60). She eventually brings them back, but
whether it is their original timeline or another, similar one, neither the
characters nor the reader can determine. All they can do is accept what
they perceive. The only environment where her talent does not work is
the virtual reality of half-life. As a fake reality, the simulation Jory traps
them in does not have alternative timelines. It is outside time. Simply put,
Pat has nowhere to go. Another reason for the cessation of her ability is
the temporal regression of the simulation: “The reversal of the time flow
annuls her talent because going to the past in a reversed time flow would
mean going to the future, to the events yet to happen” (Jakovljević 2015:
154).

Mirko Ž. Šešlak
The purpose of this argument is to show that not even Pat’s ability
can go beyond the alethic modal constraints of a natural possible world.
Despite constantly recentering the protagonists from one timeline to
another, Pat never leaves the boundaries of the fictional universe which
is analogous to the real world. Therefore, she never leaves the domain
of natural alethic constraints. Consequently, the unusual talents some
inhabitants of the novel’s primary reality possess do not have the strength
to transform that physically possible world into a supernatural one. The
outcomes of the characters’ efforts are not predetermined by supernatural
factors. Since the hypernormal alethic endowments in that possible world
are not shown as otherworldly, their presence cannot violate either its
naturalness or its coherence and verisimilitude.
The second plane in which the alethic constraints of Ubik operate is
the intermediate possible reality of half-life. It is a technologically simulated
virtual environment. Although imaginary, this intermediate environment
remains rooted in our knowledge of the real world. The source of the
knowledge used to construct this fictional universe of possible worlds is
in the mind of each suspended individual. The process is comparable to
the manner readers reconstruct a fictional world by filling in its gaps with
their knowledge of the real world: “The world which they experience is
not part of reality, but a fiction created by appropriate methods” (Lem
1975: 58). Due to the origin of this intermediate reality, the inhabitants
cannot violate its natural alethic constraints analogous to the ones valid
both in the primary fictional reality and the real world. Consequently, half-
lifers find themselves in situations where they are unable to differentiate
between their former reality and the new, intermediate one: “[P]eople
who, like Runciter’s wife, have spent years in cold sleep are well aware
of the fact. It is another matter with those who, like Joe Chip, have come
close to meeting with a violent end and have regained consciousness
imagining that they have escaped death, whereas in fact they are resting
in a moratorium” (Lem 1975: 58). Since they believe they are still alive,
such half-lifers experience the attempts at communication which come
from outside the simulation as physically inexplicable phenomena: “[I]f
the world of the frozen person’s experiences is a purely subjective one,
then any intervention in that world from outside must be for him a
phenomenon which upsets the normal course of things” (1975: 58). The
examples of such interference are Runciter’s attempts to communicate
with his employees via advertisements, a message in a pack of cigarettes,
his image on their currency, or a message on the firm’s restroom wall:
“JUMP IN THE URINAL AND STAND ON YOUR HEAD, I’M THE ONE
THAT’S ALIVE. YOU’RE ALL DEAD” (Dick 2004: 127). Bearing this in
mind, it seems fictionally true that “Joe Chip and the rest of the group are
dead, not Runciter” (Jakovljević 2015: 149). However, the last chapter turns
everything that was thought logical and fictionally true on its head. Exiting
the moratorium, Runciter tips an employee. Paradoxically, it turns out that

the image on the coin is Chip’s, just like the image on the currency used by
Chip’s group in half-life is Runciter’s: “He had an intuition, chillingly, that
if he searched his pockets, and his billfold, he would find more. This was
just the beginning” (Dick 2004: 224).
How to explain such a turn of events without violating either the
alethic constraints of physically possible or the coherency and verisimilitude
of the text? As Butler observes, “Ubik has a deceptively simple narrative;
the reality or otherwise of its conditional environment may be rationalised
until the final chapter, which throws into doubt all that has gone before”
(1995: 146). After the last chapter, the only thing that (seemingly) remains
unquestionable is “that the conditional environment is authentic up to
the point of the explosion” (1995: 148). In How Much Does Chaos Scare
You? Politics, Religion and Philosophy in the Fiction of Philip K. Dick, Aaron
Barlow expresses a similar dilemma: “If Runciter’s world proves no more
stable than that of the half-lifers’, where is he? In half-life himself – like
them?” (2005: 103). The only remaining conclusion is “that he is in half-
life, after all” (Butler 1995: 148). Lem reaches an identical conclusion:
“[A]ll the principal characters of the story were killed by the bomb on the
Moon, and consequently all of them had to be placed in the moratorium”
(1975: 58). The conclusion, although logical, leaves much unexplained. If
both Runciter and Chip are in hibernation, why does Runciter probe Chip’s
existence from the outside? If Runciter has also died, “[h]ow, then, could
he actually have helped the others?” (Barlow 2005: 103). Supposedly, the
lack of answers to these questions undermines the text’s coherence and
verisimilitude. Consequently, the readers may abandon the belief they are
reconstructing a physically possible world.
The reasons why this does not happen are simple. Upon their death,
half-lifers are not immersed in the same simulation. Provided that each
is isolated from other half-lifers, it would be logical that the number of
different simulations is equal to the number of people in hibernation.
However, it is not so. Since every aspect of the novel’s primary reality is
commercialized, a separate simulator for each person is not considered
economically feasible. To increase profits, several half-lifers are grouped
around a single simulator. Consequently, the different experiences of
the individuals in the group become the source of knowledge for the
construction of their virtual surroundings. Since there are various moratoria
as part of the novel’s primary reality, the number of simulated planes of
intermediate existence in half-life is only equal to the number of available
simulators. As confirmed by the text, Runciter’s employees are placed in
the same moratorium together with his wife and Jory Miller, a teenage boy
who prolongs his virtual existence by preying on the energy of his fellow
half-lifers. The fictional fact is first hinted at when the communication
between Runciter and Ella is interrupted by Jory: “After prolonged
proximity, […] there is occasionally a mutual osmosis, a suffusion between
the mentalities of half-lifers. Jory Miller’s cephalic activity is particularly

good; your wife’s is not” (Dick, 2004: 21). Under the circumstances, Jory’s
consciousness becomes dominant among the half-lifers sharing the same
simulator. Hence, he becomes powerful enough to govern the construction
of their joint simulation. Afterwards, he uses the simulated environment
to toy with his prey. As N. Katherine Hayles observes in How We Became
Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature and Informatics, “the
perceived actions must be happening symbolically, rather than literally”,
because “in half-life each person is cryogenically suspended in his or her
individual container, so physical assault is impossible” (1999: 186). It is
possible to deny Jory the opportunity of preying on others. All Runciter
must do is offer a financial incentive to the owner of the moratorium:
“[I]f you’re agreeable as to paying the somewhat larger monthly fee, we
can place her in a high-grade isolated chamber” (Dick 2004: 22). These
claims receive confirmation near the end of the novel when Chip meets
Ella Runciter: “Herbert is paid a great deal of money annually, by Jory’s
family, to keep him with the others and to think up plausible reasons for
doing so. And – there are Jorys in every moratorium. This battle goes on
wherever you have half-lifers; it’s a verity, a rule, of our kind of existence”
(Dick 2004: 215). Ella’s words show how dependent Jory’s pseudo-
world is on the novel’s primary reality. Jory’s abilities do not surpass the
alethic modalities of his intermediate world. He cannot reach outside its
boundaries. Decisions about Jory’s survival in half-life are made by agents
beyond his control. Only the living can provide him with his prey. Because
of these circumstances, although it may seem otherwise, Jory’s pseudo-
world is still bound by the alethic constraints of physically possible.
From the perspective of the real world, Jory’s simulation is an
intermediate possible world full of incomprehensible phenomena. The most
noticeable is the regression and devolution of his pseudo-reality. Not only
the “progressively growing together” of the people in half-life Ella speaks
of (Dick 2004: 17), but also the regression of their intermediate reality
and its objects’ decay are phenomena explicable by the natural process of
entropy. Even in the real world, this process gradually drains the limited
supply of thermal energy in the universe. Eventually, the sum of usable
energy declines, leading to inert uniformity and death. Analogous to the
circumstances in the real world, the supply of energy in half-life is also
finite. Despite robbing energy from all available sources, Jory is powerless
to preserve the simulation in its initial state. It succumbs to the alethic
constraint that not a single plane of existence can escape – entropy. It is
an observable phenomenon in half-life, much as it is either in the novel’s
primary reality or the real world. Jory’s actions accelerate it by expending
the available energy faster: “[I]n half-life we diminish constantly anyhow.
Jory only speeds it up” (Dick 2004: 215). Jakovljević also notes the role of
entropy in Ubik: “Jory aggravates the entropic process, analogous to the
effects entropy causes in our objective reality” (2015: 155). The text of the
novel offers various examples of entropic regression in Jory’s intermediate

Philip K. Dick’s Ubik: a Natural Possible World of Science Fiction or a Supernatural Possible World of Fantasy?
reality. A few moments after the explosion on the Moon and the transfer
of the principal characters into the virtual environment dominated by Jory,
Chip and the inertials begin to feel the effects of entropy as weariness and
cold. Wendy Wright is the first one to complain of the cold and “trembled
visibly” (Dick 2004: 76). Another manifestation of the entropic process is
the accelerated deterioration of objects surrounding them. Chip’s cigarette
is “dry and stale” (2004: 80), whereas his coffee is “cold, inert and ancient”
(2004: 88). The process is not limited to objects. Wendy Wright is Jory’s
first victim. All that Jory leaves in his wake is a dried heap of bones and
mummified skin: “On the floor of the closet a huddled heap, dehydrated,
almost mummified, lay curled up” (2004: 105). Outwardly, it may not seem
so, but Jory, although the creator of this intermediate reality, is powerless
when confronted with the inescapable codexal alethic constraint such as
entropy. Entropy transcends the boundaries of worlds, be they primary
fictional, intermediate or real: “Decomposition back to these forms was
not of his [Jory’s] doing; they happened despite his efforts” (2004: 209).
Jory is the victim of the same circumstances as the other characters. In the
science-fictional natural intermediate reality, the only unsurmountable
obstacle is the finality of entropy. These circumstances confirm that the
alethic modalities governing the intermediate reality Jory constructed
in half-life are fundamentally analogous to their equivalent both in the
novel’s primary reality and in the real world.
There is yet another phenomenon in Jory’s intermediate world which
may be used to show that his power is not limitless. It is the existence of
Ubik aerosol. In the novel, it serves as a “reality-support” agent whose
purpose is to counter the aggravated entropy: “One invisible puff-puff
whisk of economically priced Ubik banishes obsessive compulsive fears that
the entire world is turning into clotted milk, worn-out tape recorders and
obsolete iron-cage elevators” (2004: 134). The fact that Ubik is advertised
as a reality-support agent tells us that such a reality cannot be the
objective, primary world of the novel. Therefore, its presence points to that
reality’s intermediate, spurious nature, “the potential to fabricate reality”
(Jakovljević 2015: 156). In “‘Ubik’: The Deconstruction of Bourgeois SF”,
Fitting makes a similar observation: “Ubik’s significance as a mediating
agency or a signpost of metaphysical reality is undermined in several
critical ways. First, it protects Chip by maintaining him an illusory reality,
while covering up the ‘real’ reality of the Moratorium” (1975: 49). At one
point, Chip infers that he and the rest of his group are not part of any
regular plain of half-life existence but have been pulled into a construct
governed by “[a]n irresponsible entity that’s enjoying what’s it doing to
us” (Dick 2004: 193). As he sees it, there is more to what is happening than
they initially thought: “This is cold-pac, […] but there’s something more.
Something not natural to people in half-life. There are two forces at work
[…]; one helping us and one destroying us” (2004: 196). Ubik is a product
whose purpose is realized in the intermediate surroundings of half-life:
Lipar / Journal for Literature, Language, Art and Culture / Year XXIV / Volume 82 117
Mirko Ž. Šešlak
“Unlike the entropic effect of regression, which leads to stasis and death,
Ubik’s effect is kinetic, because its nullification of regression facilitates
motion and life” (Jakovljević 2015: 155). However, since it is limited to
an intermediate existence, Ubik falls from its potentially divine and
supernatural pedestal to the plane of humanly imaginable: “Ubik is a human
invention, an image of humankind’s own struggle against entropy, rather
than an image of divine assistance or guidance in that struggle” (Fitting
1975: 49). Jakovljević also makes a notable observation about the nature
of the illusion Ubik appears in: “Jory is not familiar with Ubik although
this agent originates from within the world which he has learnt to survive
and dominate like a deity” (2015: 155). The fact that he is unfamiliar with
Ubik, although he encounters it in the environment he created, points to
the conclusion that Jory’s omnipotence is an illusion. Even so, he begins
to glimpse the true nature of the agent: “This originates from within our
environment. It has to, because nothing can come in from outside except
words” (Dick 2004: 205). It is exactly what Ubik is, a metaphor of the desire
to achieve a balance between the lethal truth of entropy and the apparent
reality trying to obscure it. Since Jory’s simulation is an intermediate
reality, we can truthfully say that he is not holding an aerosol in his hand,
for both the bottle and the hand are non-existent. The absence of the need
to scientifically explain something that only seemingly exists is pointed
out by Richard D. D. Visković in his doctoral dissertation Philip K. Dick’s
Search for Reality: “If Ubik is a scientific invention to help restore those in
half-life, why does it only seem to exist inside half-life, where science and
physical laws do not appear to rule as they do in the real world?” (2013:
150). The bodies of half-lifers, as well as the entities of the intermediate
reality they inhabit, are manifestations enabling them to experience the
fictional environment seemingly5 surrounding them in a way they can
understand: “The word of existence in nothingness is Logos, the creator,
God, the deliverer, glimpsed as the true reality through the simulation of
existence, hidden in its every part, underneath layers of falsehood and
deception” (Jakovljević 2015: 158). Ubik is the word which supports and
restores the appearance. The strength of the word remains an illusion
unravelling one layer of deception, Jory’s pseudo-reality, to preserve half-
life’s inhabitants from facing the entropic truth by creating another layer.
To grasp the nature of Ubik, one needs to understand its operation
is related to an outwardly antipodal process, entropy. Although they
operate in opposite directions, both are manifestations of the same alethic
constraints: “One is a going-away, so to speak. A going-out-of-existence.
[…] The second process is a coming-into-existence. But of something that’s
never existed before” (Dick 2004: 113). If they are in balance, entropy
operates imperceptibly. Problems arise when a third factor upsets the
balance. Entropy becomes accelerated, observed as regression, cold and
decay in half-life. Ubik restores the balance: “Just as Joe Chip characterises
5 Their physical bodies rest cryonically suspended and immobile in the moratorium.

the balance between telepath and inertial as inevitable and eternal, so too
does Ella characterise the balance between herself and Jory, and the forces
they represent” (Visković 2013: 160). Ubik is not aggressive. It neutralizes
Jory’s influence and decelerates entropy, restoring the natural equilibrium
similarly to the way inertials operate against telepaths and precogs in the
novel’s primary reality. Ubik cannot destroy Jory: “Maybe in time you can
learn ways to nullify him. […] I doubt that you can truly destroy him –
in other words consume him – as he does to half-lifers placed near him
at the moratorium” (Dick 2004: 215). Destruction is not the answer half-
lifers need: “[C]onsuming the predator cannot be a final solution, for the
only way to achieve this illusory closure is by taking the predator ‘inside’,
thus symbolically and literally becoming a predator oneself” (Hayles 1999:
186). Although Ubik restores the balance by concealing entropy, it also
reveals the truth behind the deception. Chip no longer needs to feel “like
an ineffectual moth, fluttering at the windowpane of reality, dimly seeing it
from outside” (Dick 2004: 136). Ubik enables him to open the window and
glimpse the truth. However, both the deception and the truth in question
are conditional. The layer of deception is the mask concealing reality.
Nevertheless, that reality is only intermediate; another, deeper layer of
deception. An example of Chip’s glimpse at the reality behind the mask is
the scene where Don Denny turns Ubik towards himself: “[T]hey’re all dead;
only you and I are left, and the Ubik is going to wear off you in a few hours.
And you won’t be able to get any more. Which will leave me” (Dick 2004:
203). In terms of Denny’s prior conduct toward Chip, the words spoken are
incongruous. Naturally, it is so if the reader believes that the character is
Denny: “The person standing there, in the center of the vaporizing stain of
Ubik that had saturated the worn and dingy carpet, was not Don Denny”
(Dick 2004: 203). Ubik is proven to be an agent whose “appearance and
effect reveal the truth by removing the veil of dokos [deception], whereas
reality, viewed as genuine by the protagonists, is a construct, an imperfect
reflection of the true reality” (Jakovljević 2015: 158). By forcing him to
reveal his motivation, Chip shows that Jory is a false deity of a spurious
reality. He feeds on the energy of others not merely because he wants to,
but because he is forced to: “I used to wait until they had been in half-life
awhile, but now I have to have them immediately. If I’m going to be able to
live myself” (Dick 2004: 204). Since his strength is limited, Jory’s pseudo-
world does not exist beyond the half-lifers’ horizon: “Wherever you and
others of the group went, I constructed a tangible reality corresponding
to their minimal expectations” (Dick 2004: 206). Comparable to an author
constructing a fictional reality, Jory is unable to fill its gaps. It requires high
expenditures of energy, leading to its irreversible loss and the acceleration
of entropy. The entropic chaos surrounding Jory’s world is pouring in. His
powerlessness to resist it can be detected in his words: “[I]f you were to get
into one of those cars and drive for miles… eventually you’d reach a point

where it breaks down. And you wouldn’t like that any better than I do”
(Dick 2004: 207).

Philip K. Dick’s Ubik: a Natural Possible World of Science Fiction or a Supernatural Possible World of Fantasy?
smatrajući ga zbunjujućim delom, prožetim natprirodnim nečistoćama i nedostatkom
Kako bismo to učinili, moramo analizirati aletička
ograničenja tog fikcionalnog sveta, jer aletički pripovedni modaliteti upravljaju
formiranjem fizičkih zakona datog sveta fikcije i određuju šta je moguće, nemoguće
i nužno unutar njegovih granica.

dali svoj doprinos u odbrani Paskvalićevog rodnog grada. Zbog svega navedenog, Paskvalićeve
poslanice značajne su književno i istorijsko svjedočanstvo. Cilj ovog rada je da sveobuhvatno
analizira i osvijetli slobodarski duh bokokotorskog poete prikazan kroz refleksiju njegovih
poslanica sa rodoljubnom tematikom, uz pomoć istraživačkog i književno-istorijskog metoda
zasnovanog na kombinaciji dostupnih istraživanja o autoru i na osnovu analitičkog pristupa
Paskvalićevom književnom legatu na italijanskom jeziku.

Summary / The topic of this paper is the description of the epistles of the poet Ludovic
Paskvalić (1500-1551) which he sent to his friends, fellow citizens, and high officials
of the Republic of Venice, and which were bequeathed in his only poetry book pub-
lished during his lifetime in the Italian language Rime volgari (1549). The best years
of the poet’s life from the Bay of Kotor coincided with the period of dominance of
the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean and its threat to the Venetian Republic,
which included the poet’s hometown - Kotor. The wartime circumstances in which
he grew up gave birth to freedom as one of the important subjects in his work, for
which Paskvalić fought not only with a pen but also with a weapon. As a chronicler
of the times, he left precious information about his contemporaries who contrib-
uted to the defense of Paskvalić’s hometown. Because of all the above, Paskvalić’s
epistles are a significant literary and historical testimony. The aim of this work is to
comprehensively analyze and shed light on the libertarian spirit of the Bay of Kotor
poet as shown through the reflection of his epistles with a patriotic subject, with the
help of a research and literary-historical method based on a combination of avail-
able research on the author and on the basis of an analytical approach to Paskvalić’s
literary legacy in the Italian language.

Summary / The goal of our research is the relationship between literary criticism at
the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, according to one of the
most prominent poets of Serbian modernity, therefore, from a certain time distance,
which confirms that Sima Pandurović, with his symbolic verses imbued with intel-
lectualism, also belongs to the future, i.e. the present moment. Through the wider
political, literary, and social contexts, we deal with some of the most significant
analyzes of Pandurović’s mischief, embodied in works by Miroslav Egerić, Bojana
Stojanović Pantović, Jovan Delić, Predrag Petrović, Aleksandar Bošković and Milivoj
Nenin. Pessimism imbued with true emotion, elements of expressionism, poetics of
the ugly and irrationalism, new sensibility, the category of madness, are just some
of Pandurović’s characteristic creations, which showed that the mentioned poet,
with a certain part of his opus, was a forerunner of expressionism, foreshadowed
the avant-garde, and was therefore deservedly rehabilitated as a poet decades later.

Summary / The main the main purpose of this work was to observe polysemic lexemes
when translating an artistic text into another language. After a detailed analysis, we
concluded that the trap that polysemic lexemes set before the translator was suc-
cessfully circumvented by applying different translation techniques. One of the main
characteristics that we noticed on polysemic lexemes from this corpus is that they do
not always have equivalent meanings and that, in the case when polysemic lexemes
from the source language do not have their polysemic equivalent in the language of
translation, it is most often resorted to the descriptive translation, and somewhat
less frequently to the use of the lexemes that have only one meaning.

Popular music is an integral part of the cultural landscape of the modern world, and its influence
on language and communication cannot be overstated. This paper examines the advantages of
integrating popular music lyrics into foreign language classrooms, with a particular focus on
sentence structures. Using a corpus of 802 songs with more than 200 million views on YouTube,
the research aims to explore the accuracy of popular music lyrics with respect to different
sentence structures and subject-verb agreement. The initial hypothesis suggested that popular
music lyrics would predominantly contain grammatical errors, which our analysis revealed
showing that 396 songs were grammatically correct (49.37%), while 406 songs contained errors
(50.62%), resulting in a total of 1506 syntactic errors, 794 of them being related to sentence
structure errors and 417 to the incorrect subject-verb agreement. The remaining errors (295)
were related to double negatives, which we did not analyze in this paper. The most frequent
sentence structure errors included the omission of auxiliary verbs (470 instances), auxiliary
verbs that were used as main verbs (110), incorrect verb order (76), bare infinitives that were
used as auxiliary verbs (77), and incorrect use of objective pronouns (61). The study utilized a
combination of manual and descriptive analysis to investigate the potential benefits of incor-
porating popular music lyrics into foreign language classrooms. The findings indicate that such
integration can help students develop meta-language awareness and expose them to various
language registers. Overall, the research demonstrates the pedagogical potential of popular
music lyrics as a resource for foreign language instruction, particularly for teaching grammar
and syntax. By using popular music lyrics in foreign language classrooms, educators can cre-
ate an engaging and diverse learning environment that helps students comprehend and utilize
language in various contexts, ultimately leading to more effective language learning outcomes.

2017; Werner 2019; Žarković Mccray, Kunjundžić and Gavilović 2021). The
way in which popular music communicates meaning through its lyrics is
a fascinating area of research, as it involves the intersection of language,
culture and society. English popular music is omnipresent in the society,
which inevitably positions its lyrics as the popular culture texts (Trotta
2010, 2013).
The concept of medium-transferability was introduced by Lyons
(1981) and denotes that a text can be conveyed through either written
or spoken means without any alteration to its intended meaning.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that a text was specifically
intended for a certain medium, as its significance is not inherently tied
to the means of presentation. Esser (2006) elaborates on the concept
of medium-transferability by underscoring the significance of a text’s
origin. Additionally, Ochs (1979) introduces the notion of planned
discourse, which proposes that oral texts can range from spontaneous
to carefully planned. By considering these three concepts (medium-
transferability, origin, and planned discourse), popular song lyrics can be
regarded as deliberately composed texts intended to be sung, exploiting
the transferability of written language to the spoken medium. As a result,
any atypical use of language or specific linguistic selections in song lyrics
cannot be disregarded as incidental (Eiter 2017).
Popular music lyrics in foreign language classrooms were completely
avoided in the middle of the 20th century due to their various non-standard
grammatical elements (Stocker 1923; Gravenall 1949) only to be included
later, but merely as materials that would help students relax while they
are not studying for tests (Smith 2003). The use of popular music lyrics in
teaching has been neglected, as highlighted in various studies (Engh 2013;
Langeland Dunsire 2013). In particular, grammar is rarely addressed in
song-based activities in foreign language classrooms and textbooks, where
they are often reduced to supplementary materials and limited to listening
comprehension and general writing tasks (Keskinen 2014; Summer 2018;
Tegge 2018). These trends and the practice may prevent non-native English
language learners from gaining meta-language awareness, which means
having a clear and direct understanding of language, as well as being aware
and able to consciously perceive and understand language in the process
of learning, teaching and using it, with all the variations and complexity,
which is important for foreign language learning. Trotta (2010: 45)
supports these concerns and says:

2 The necessity to expose learners of any language to authentic input is recognized by authors who
use different means to familiarize learners with it and bring them closer to the speech community
they are trying to understand. For more details about their studies see: Martinez-Flor (2007) who

hip-hop, country, funk, rhythm and blues and electronic dance music
(EDM), to ensure a diverse representation of popular music.
This list was generated using the YouTube search engine and the
“sort by views” filter during the research period from March 2015 over
July 2022.3 The lyrics of the selected songs were collected from two lyric
websites: AZLyrics and Genius. AZLyrics was selected as a reliable source
because it allows users to make corrections to the lyrics after they have been
submitted, which serves as a form of built-in quality control. Additionally,
previous linguistic studies that focused on lyrics have found that AZLyrics
has consistently provided accurate transcriptions (Motschenbacher 2016).
Genius was used to reinforce the validity and reliability of data as the
second reliable and independent source.4
The lyrics of these songs were analyzed using a combination of
manual analysis and descriptive analysis. Manual analysis allowed for a
close reading of the lyrics and identification of the sentence structures used
in each song. This approach is particularly suitable for this study because it
enabled a detailed and nuanced understanding of the grammar of the lyrics.
Descriptive analysis, on the other hand, was used to provide a quantitative
summary of the data. This method involves the use of numerical techniques
to describe the data and provide a clear overview of the distribution of non-
standard grammatical occurrences in the corpus. We divided all the errors
into two groups: sentence structure errors (focusing on the omission of
auxiliary verbs, auxiliary verbs that are used as main verbs, bare infinitives
that are used as main verbs, incorrect word order and the incorrect use of
objective pronouns) and subject-verb agreement errors.
Overall, the combination of manual analysis and descriptive analysis
is well-suited to proving the general hypothesis that syntactic errors are
prevalent in popular music and showing the grammar of the lyrics. By
employing these methods, this study can provide nuanced understanding
of the grammar of popular music lyrics in English and shed light on the
prevalence of syntactic errors in popular music.
The corpus consisted of 802 songs with more than 200 million views
on YouTube, of which 396 were linguistically correct (49.37%) and 406
were incorrect (50.62%). The study found a total of 1506 errors, of which

numbers are updated weekly if not daily and there are no comprehensive lists that contain all
videos.

ethical concerns related to the use of human subjects or the need for informed consent. However,
the intellectual property rights of the songwriters are acknowledged and the sources of the lyrics

errors, and the remaining errors were double negatives (295 instances),
which were not analyzed in this paper.5
The most common type of error was sentence structure errors, which
accounted for 52.75% of all errors. The most common and frequent errors
in this group were the omission of auxiliary verbs that account for 55.94%
(n = 470) of errors, followed by auxiliary verbs that were used as main
verbs with 13.05% (n = 110), incorrect word order with 9.02% (n = 76),
bare infinitives that were used as auxiliary verbs with 9.16% (n = 77), and
incorrect use of objective pronouns with 7.24% (n = 61) of errors. We start
with some typical examples6:
3) It’s not good enough for me, since I been with you
It’s not gonna work for you, nobody can equal me (I know)
I’m gonna sip on this drink, when I’m fucked up
I should know how to pick up (French Montana and Swae Lee –
Unforgettable)
4) I just left the mall, I’m getting fly with my baby, yeah
And I can ride with my baby I be in the kitchen cooking pies
with my baby, yeah (Fetty Wap – Trap Queen)
5 The phenomenon of double negatives, which involves the use of two negation elements within
a single sentence, warrants a distinct treatment due to its unique linguistic and communicative
features, which have been the subject of extensive theoretical and empirical inquiry in the fields of
syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
6 Given the infeasibility of enumerating all instances of the identified sentence structure errors
within the scope of this research paper, a few representative examples will be presented for each
category.
Lipar / Journal for Literature, Language, Art and Culture / Year XXIV / Volume 82 201
Maja M. Žarković Mccray
The errors identified in the songs No Brainer (1) and Swalla (2)
involve the omission of auxiliary verbs, which results in the absence of
grammatically required elements, leading to incorrect syntactic structures.
Specifically, the sentences in question lack a complete syntactic structure
due to the absence of auxiliary verbs, resulting in questions that are
grammatically incorrect, such as “What you been waitin’ on this whole
time?” (1), or positive sentences that rely solely on the present participle
to convey the intended message, as in “He copping that Valentino” (2).
The second most common error found in the analyzed songs involves the
use of auxiliary verbs in their bare infinitive form, which results in them
being used as main verbs, as shown in Unforgettable (3) and Trap Queen
(4). This error is considered a departure from standard English syntax,
which requires that auxiliary verbs be accompanied by a main verb to
form a complete sentence. In contrast, some songs, such as 7 Rings (6),
do incorporate both auxiliary verbs and main verbs, but the sentences
are not complete due to the use of auxiliary verbs in their bare infinitive
forms. For example, the lyrics “my receipts be lookin’ like phone numbers,
it be settin’ the tone for me” include both the auxiliary verb “be” and the
main verbs “lookin’” and “settin’.” However, the bare infinitive forms of
the auxiliary verbs result in incomplete sentences that do not adhere to
standard English grammar rules. Additionally, the song Drunk in Love (5)
contains an error in word order, as the sentence “Drunk in love we be all
night” lacks a subject and instead begins with a verb. Furthermore, the
auxiliary verb to be is used as a main verb in its bare infinitive form, which
deviates from standard English grammatical rules. A further deviation from
standard English grammar is observed in the song “What’s My Name?” (7),

where an objective pronoun is used before the object in the phrase “with
them soft lips.” It is important to recognize that although such language
usage may be common in certain genres of music, it is not considered
acceptable in formal or academic writing contexts, where adherence to
standard grammar and syntax is crucial for effective communication.
The second most common type of error was subject-verb agreement
errors, which accounted for 27.69% of all errors. Some typical examples
follow:
11) These expensive, these is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes (ooh)
Hit the store, I can get ‘em both, I don’t wanna choose (bah)
And I’m quick, cut a nigga off, so don’t get comfortable, look
(ooh) (Cardi B – Bodak Yellow)

verbs, such as “He don’t run from nothin’” (8), “But that don’t mean
that we can’t live here” (9), or “But my heart don’t understand” (10). The
contraction “don’t,” which stands for “do not,” can complicate matters for
language learners, as it may conceal the incorrect subject-verb agreement.
Conversely, some lyrics include plural subjects followed by singular verbs,
such as “These is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes” (11) and “Since we
was on” (12), further highlighting the importance of incorporating popular
music lyrics into foreign language classrooms.
The findings suggest that incorporating popular music lyrics with
these types of errors into foreign language classrooms can be highly
advantageous for language learners. By encountering and analyzing these
errors, students can develop their awareness of the rules and structures
of the language. By comparing non-standard elements found in popular
music lyrics with their usage in formal writing and conversation, one
can underscore the varied registers present in language and the lack of
uniformity within them. This can help students recognize that languages
exhibit diversity in their forms of expression. According to Leech (1994:
20), the discovery that native speakers use language in unpredictable
ways that may even contradict the rules set by grammar experts can serve
as a beneficial experience for both teachers and learners. In essence,
educators can leverage this realization to enlighten their students about
the pragmatic and dynamic nature of language use. Furthermore, the
inclusion of music lyrics in language learning materials can foster a more
engaging and relatable learning environment, where students can enjoy
the music and appreciate the lyrics while also improving their language
proficiency, meta-language awareness, motivation, and learning outcomes.
4. CONCLUDING REMARKS
This study has successfully achieved its goal of analyzing the accuracy
of sentence structures of popular music lyrics in English. Our findings
confirmed the hypothesis that incorrect sentence structures are prevalent
in popular music, with over half of the analyzed songs containing linguistic
errors.
The study corpus of 802 songs, with more than 200 million views
on YouTube, revealed a total of 1506 syntactic errors, with 794 errors
related to sentence structures and 417 to the incorrect SVA. The most
prominent sentence structure errors were the omission of auxiliary verbs,
followed by auxiliary verbs that were used as main verbs, incorrect word
order, bare infinitives that were used as auxiliary verbs, and the incorrect
use of objective pronouns. Meanwhile, SVA errors show singular subjects
followed by plural verbs and vice versa.
The results of this study highlight the importance of considering
popular music lyrics as a valuable resource for language learners and

4. CONCLUSION
i.e. l’ultériorité du passé.
simple dans la langue française ;

Summary / In this work we present the temporal uses of the Potential in Serbian
and the Conditional in French. According to recent theories (Dendale and Tasmowski
2001; Bres 2009; 2010; 2012), the French conditional represents one of the verb
tenses of the indicative and we distinguish its temporal uses: objective and subjec-
tive (Bres 2009; 2010; 2012). The Serbian potential; on the other hand, is a mode,
but this verb form also knows temporal usages. Building upon the works of Popović
(1977), Ašić et al. (2017), and Dodig (2018), we examine the use of habitual Potential
and Potential in so-called non-teleonomic sentences in Serbian, which represent its
temporal uses. Our objective is to identify the semantic equivalents of the temporal
uses of the Potential and the Conditional in both languages, aiming to contribute to
the field of traductology.
