Short Mini Group Essay Writing (20%)

General topic: News media Reading Experience
CLO3: Relate your understanding and knowledge on contemporary issues related to communication
and society.
SUBTOPIC
1. The recent forced labour Issue in Malaysia (IRLS)
2. Child abuse/fatality in child care centre (SW)

NEWS CHARACTERISTICS
Each member chooses the best news and discusses it in your group.
(Setiap member pilih news dia yang tersendiri)
Then write a report. The news choice should be varied:
1. News that is from English, BM, Mandarin or Tamil news media. (At least two languages)

2. At least inclusive 4 categories of portal news (see my slide notes)

3. Local news portals and at least one international news agency/portal.

 4. Different forms of news – hard news; feature articles (like a magazine article), columns,
long interviews, and opinions.

GROUP MEMBERSHIP
1. Divide the existing group into 2. Example: Group 1 becomes Group 1A and Group 1B. The
members must be divided evenly. For the group with odd number of members, the best
allocation is four members for one subgroup and another subgroup will have five members.

THE REPORT: CONTENT

1. INTRODUCTION
List out each news and give brief reason why you choose the news. Reflect/related your one
or two reasons (one person) with the characteristics and knowledge that you gain after
learning News Media Topic.

Eg. This news is hard news type because it reports an 11 month baby was found dead in
Taska A. It is a tragedy that happened on a specific date. The facts are based on 5W 1H
(explain further).

Each member preferably relates to different points.

2. THE ISSUE
What is it about that you learn some new info from the news? (two-three paragraphs). Must include
citation from the news. These paragraphs combine all important info that you want to highlight from
all news collected.

3. CONCLUSION
What do you think the role of journalist across news portals? How does they advocate change for
better law/practice/behaviour? Has their voice heard by the lawmakers/ministry?

1. Cover page as usual. Follow earlier sample given in project

2. Times New Roman, size 12, double spacing, approximately 500-700 words.
4. No copy and paste from existing sources or your friend. If you take resources from the internet
either text or picture, you must cite in your text and then write in the Reference section. If you read
only, no citation required but you can still write in the Reference.
5. Reference APA 7th edition is required in the introduction.
6. Labelling your file – G 1A coordinator name IRLS.
