HYSPAN FIELD OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR

TYPE N STYLE II, OW 1500 STYLE II, & ASME CLASS BALL JOINTS

These products are pressure packed and maintenance free.

ONLY add packing if product is leaking.

GENERAL FIELD OPERATION RECOMMENDATIONS

1) Liquids or steam flow can be in either direction, except for liquids with suspended solids or high
velocity flow. For suspended solids or high velocity applications, flow should be through ball end
to casing end.

2) In vertical position without suspended solids or high velocity flow, joints should be installed BALL
END DOWN to prevent foreign matter from collecting between neck of ball and retainer.

3) Do not disassemble ball joints to install. Each joint is preset and tested before shipment.
LOOSENING OF BALL JOINT RETAINERS IS NOT RECOMMENDED. If retainer nut or retainer flange
MUST BE LOOSENED for positioning, the bolts or retainer should be loosened 1/4 of a revolution
maximum using a standard crossing pattern. Retainer must be immediately retightened evenly to
the proper torque values before any pressure testing or flushing of the line. There is a setscrew to
maintain the position of the retainer — be sure the setscrew is loosened and retightened after the
adjustment and prior to applying pressure. Retighten using the procedure outlined in Disassemble
Section (J) of the Maintenance Instructions below. Loosen the retainer 1/4 revolution maximum
and retighten the same rotation. OW 1500 Style II ball joints have threaded retainers. Loosen the
retainer 1/4 revolution maximum and retighten the same rotation.

4) Use CAUTION preheating, welding, or post weld heat-treating ball joints into line. Excessive heat-
ing of the sealing area may cause leakage. Protect exposed ball from weld splatter. Prevent dirt
from collecting around neck of ball or slip.

5) Although ball joints can be rotated or twisted around the centerline, they are designed to absorb
motion by the Offset Method that utilizes angular flex to provide the required movement. If an
application involves extensive rotating motion, consult a Hyspan Barco sales representative or
contact Hyspan by email at websales@hyspan.com

6) Do not use ball joints in place of pipe unions. Ball joints can be
used as swivels in certain applications—consult a Hyspan Barco sales
representative or contact Hyspan by email at
websales@hyspan.com.

HYSPAN FIELD OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
FOR TYPE N STYLE II, OW 1500 STYLE II & ASME CLASS BALL JOINTS

GENERAL WARNINGS
Eye protection and appropriate safety apparel should be worn during any maintenance or repair of high
temperature, high pressure steam, hot water or fluids piping, fittings, and ball joints. Type N Style II,
OW 1500 Style II and ASME Class Hyspan Barco Ball Joints are not designed for maintenance to be
performed while the system is pressurized.

DO NOT PERFORM ANY ADJUSTMENTS TO A BALL JOINT THAT IS PRESSURIZED.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLUGGED (Style II Ball) JOINTS

To correct leaks or perform routine maintenance. Injected joints with plugs are factory charged,
adjusted, and locked by tack welding retainer nut or retainer bolting. (DO NOT BREAK TACK WELDS
OR TRY TO TURN BOLTING). Recharge only if leakage occurs.

In order to repack Type N Style II, OW 1500 Style II and ASME Class Hyspan Barco Ball Joints a recharge
cylinder (P/N 10-64416-43) and packing pellets available in reload kits of 13 pellets (P/N 10-64715-00) will
be required. These products are available from an authorized Hyspan Barco representative or contact
Hyspan at websales@hyspan.com.

WARNING: RELIEVE LINE PRESSURE. ALLOW JOINTS TO COOL

SUFFICIENTLY FOR USE OF HAND TOOLS BEFORE DOING FOLLOWING
PROCEDURES. USE EXTREME CAUTION – PRESSURE MAY BE TRAPPED
UNDER PLUGS.

NOTE: IN ADDITION TO PACKING PELLETS, A CHARGING CYLINDER AND

RAM SCREW IS REQUIRED. Hyspan products currently use NPT plug and
cylinder fittings. Previous designs were NPSM straight threads. For carbon
steel injector cylinders with current NPT fitting use P/N# 10-90159-43. For
NPSM fittings or other materials consult Hyspan. Style II
Recharge Cylinder
1) In case of leakage, recharge using the following procedures.

2) Confirm the system pressure is off and you have a recharge cylinder.

3) Carefully remove charging port plugs.

4) Unscrew recharge cylinder ram screw.

5) Coat threads of ram screw and recharge cylinder with high temperature
anti-seize compound (Fel-Pro C-1000 or equal).

6) Load cylinder with one (1) pellet. Replace ram screw, thread into cylinder until a
small amount of sealant has been forced from tip, removing all air from cylinder.

7) Thread recharge cylinder into joint port until tight. Bottom of cylinder
may not contact joint casing. Support recharge cylinder with pipe
wrench to avoid stripping threads. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

8) Inject sealant into port, turning ram screw clockwise. Add additional
pellets to the cylinder until sealant is forced from an adjacent port or
a maximum 35 ft-lbs (47 N-m) torque on ram screw.
Recharge Kit Pellets
9) Remove charging cylinder. Sealant should tend to push back out of port.
Replace port plug.

10) Move charging cylinder to next port, repeating steps 2 through 9 until all ports have been
recharged. REPLACE AND FULLY TIGHTEN ALL CHARGING PORT PLUGS BEFORE RESTORING
LINE PRESSURE.

These products are pressure packed and maintenance free.

ONLY add packing if product is leaking.

TO DISASSEMBLE the ball joint for maintenance it must be removed from the system.

A. Disassemble the joint by removing the retainer.

B. Inspect the inner seal for wear: The inner seal is seldom worn enough to require replacement.
C. Clean and inspect ball surface carefully. Replace the ball if it is worn, scored, or pitted.
D. Replacement balls, seals, and packing are available from an authorized Hyspan Barco
representative or contact Hyspan at websales@hyspan.com. Be certain to dispose of
discarded seals and injected packing properly.
E. To reassemble, coat the surfaces of the seal(s) and ball with a light coat of assembly lubricant.
For service over 350º F use molybdenum disulfide- based lubricant.
F. If the inner seal has been removed, install it in the case with the concave surface out by tapping it
in place evenly with a soft mallet.
G. Slide new outer seal over extended end of ball with the concave surface mating to the convex
surface of ball.
H. Replace ball into casing.
I. Tap the new outer seal evenly with plastic or rubber hammer into casing around ball.
J. For bolted retainers tighten retainer bolting to the following factory torque settings
using a standard crossing pattern.
