(IMPORTANT) Before reading this Operation Manual

This Operation Manual is intended for the CPJ-PC200 for Europe/general countries. As circuits differ slightly from that
for USA/Canada, take note of the following.

• Power supply circuit

For the CPJ-PC200 for Europe, the AC power is converted to DC12V by the power supply circuit inside the AC
adapter (AC-CPJ100E).
For the CPJ-PC200 for USA/Canada, this power supply circuit is incorporated inside the unit, thus eliminating the
need for an AC adapter. (The unit is connected directly to the outlet.)

• NTSC/PAL selection switch

This switch is not provided with the CPJ-PC200 for USA/Canada because it is for NTSC only. Consequently, circuits
and adjustments for decoding of PAL signals have been omitted.

I. OUTLINE
1. Q&A on Handling
(1) Screen display
(i) Types of video signals (CPJ-PC200)
Switch the video/PC selector according to the type of signals input.
As the NTSC signal is output from the VCO-200 connected to the PC, switch the selector to “Video” when
inputting only PAL video signals.

Table-1. Video/PC Selector

Selector PC Video
Input Signal PC, video (NTSC) Video (PAL)

(ii) Switches 1 to 4 (VCO-200)

• Switch 1 : NO CONNECT
Operations are not affected whether ON or OFF.

• Switch 2 : Horizontal compression (ENTIRE WIDTH)

ON : Compresses slightly in the horizontal direction and displays.
OFF : The left and right sides of the screen are slightly cut off.

• Switches 3, 4 : Flicker elimination (FLICKER ELIMINATION)

Table-2. Effects of Flicker Elimination

Effects NO MIN MID MAX
Switch 3 OFF ON ON OFF
Switch 4 OFF ON OFF ON

(iii) Cut off of images

Because of the difference in the computer screen signals and general video signals in the CPJ-PC200, the top/
bottom/left and right sides of the screen are cut off slightly.
To view the cut off images, press the position button on the converter unit (VCO-200) and move the screen to
the top/bottom/left/right side.
For example, to display an icon at the bottom, move the screen up.

(2) Attached software (TV-Pro)

The CPJ-PC200 is provided with a software for presentation (TV-Pro).
SONY does not handle problems which arise in this software.
If problems occur, call the software manufacturers (ARTMEDIA, PACIFIC TECHNOLOGY, etc.) listed in the
instruction manual for the TV-Pro.

(3) Cleaning
(i) Filter sponge
If air passage of the filter sponge at the air intake becomes poor due to accumulated dusts, the temperature of
the unit may rise excessively and cause the unit to stop.
Wash this sponge when it becomes dirty.
P/N : X-3944-375-1 (SPONGE ASSY, FILTER)

(ii) Lens
When the lens becomes dirty with tobacco smoke, etc., the screen may become dark. The lens may also be
stained with fingerprints during replacement of parts.
In such cases, clean the lens with a lens cleaning tissue paper. Do not use solvents such as alcohol as these will
damage the lens coating.

—3—
(4) Stop of unit operations
(i) Temperature detection
When the internal temperature of the unit rises more than 85°C, current supplied to the lamp will be stopped by
the thermistor of the power supply circuit. (Acts as a fuse.)
In such cases, the screen will display the alert message “TEMP” and the unit will set into the power OFF mode.
When the temperature falls, the unit will automatically return to the state where it can be used. The thermistor
need not be replaced.

(ii) LAMP HOUSE OPEN DET switch

As it is extremely dangerous if the power turns on accidentally during lamp replacement, a switch is provided
to detect the opening/closing of the LAMP HOUSE.
If this switch is not pressed, the unit will not operate.
If this cover is not closed completely, the power will not turn on even when the power switch is pressed.

(iii) Fan stop detection

When the lamp cooling fan stops due to presence of foreign objects, the temperature will rise excessively. For
this reason, the power goes off automatically when the fan has been detected as stopped.
At this time, the screen will display the alert message “FAN”.
Consequently, when the fan stop detection input is abnormal, the power will not turn on even when the power
switch is pressed.

(iv) Video signal detection

If no video signal has been input and the lamp has been lit for more than 5 minutes, the unit sets into the
standby state automatically to protect the life of the lamp.
n [(iii) Presence of video signal] See page 9.

II. CIRCUIT OPERATIONS
1. Outline
(1) System configuration (See Fig. 1.)
• CPJ-PC200 (Projector)
• AC adapter for projector (AC-CPJ100E)
(Note) The CPJ-PC200 for U/CA does not have an AC adapter.
• TV scanning converter (VCO-200)
• AC adapter for TV scanning converter
CPJ-PC200ES ......... AC-64NES (For CED)
AC-E90HG (For CEK)
CPJ-PC200 .............. AC-64NC (For U2/CA2)

(i) CPJ-PC200 (Projector)

Like the one marketed for consumers, the 12V input from the AC adapter is used to display the video signal
input (Pin or S terminal) on the screen.

(ii) AC-CPJ100E (AC adapter)

Converts the AC power to 12V DC output. This adapter cannot be repaired and has to be replaced when
damaged.
It is incorporated inside the CPJ-PC200 for the CPJ-PC200 for U/CA.

(iii) VCO-200 (TV scanning converter)

Converts the RGB input from the PC to video signals. As the screen of the input from the PC cannot be
displayed fully on the projector (edges will be cut off), a function to move the screen up/down/left/right is
provided.
It cannot be repaired and has to be replaced when damaged.

(iv) AC adapter for TV scanning converter

Fig. 1. Structure of CPJ-PC200

—5—
(2) Circuit Structure of CPJ-200
The CPJ-200 is composed of the circuits shown in Fig. 2.
(Note) Some of the boards of the U/CA unit have different names.

(i) Power supply circuit

DC12V is input from the AC adapter and regulated to various drive voltages in the power supply board (PC-
366). The Halogen lamp voltage is supplied from the SE-49 board while the fan motor voltage is supplied from
the FS-75 board. The signal circuit voltage is sent to the main board (MA-260) to operate the unit.

(ii) Signal circuit

The video signal and audio signal are input from the JK-143 board. Inside the main board (MA-260), YC
separation, RGB decoding, and character addition to the screen are performed on the video signal, the RGB
signal is output to the DR-83 board, and displayed on the LCD.
The audio signal is amplified inside the main board and output to the speakers and headphones.

(iii) Control circuit

The key input is input to the system controller of the main board from the SW-258 board. The lamp cover
switch signal, fan motor stop signal, and S cable connection signal are also input to the system controller.

Fig. 2. Circuit Block of CPJ-PC200

—6—
2. Power Supply Circuit
(1) Operation voltages
In the CPJ-PC200, the following voltages are regulated. (See Fig. 3.)
• System controller : 6V
• Signal circuit : 5.3V
• LCD : 16V
• LCD/RGB driver : 12V
• Audio circuit : 9V
• Halogen lamp : 12V
• Fan motor : 12V

Note) The CPJ-PC200 for U/CA incorporates a circuit to convert AC voltage to DC12V.

Fig. 3. Circuit Voltage

(2) Voltage for system controller (6V)

This is the first voltage created.
When 12V is input from the AC adapter, UNSW5V is output from the 6V regulator (IC901) on the power supply
board (PS-366) to the system controller of the main board.
Circuit protection fuses (PC901, PS902) are provided on the power supply board and the main board each.
When this voltage is input to the system controller and starts up the system controller, the STBY LED (Pin 14)
becomes “L” and the standby LED lights up.

(NOTE)
If the power of the unit does not turn on, first check if this voltage is being input to the system controller. If the
LED is lit, it means that the system controller has been started up normally. In this case, check the other switch
inputs (LAMP HOUSE OPEN DET switch, etc.).

—7—
(3) Voltage for signal circuit (5.3V)
When the system controller starts circuit operations according to key inputs, it sets the STBY signal to “H”. The
5.3V regulator (IC109) on the main board then outputs 5.3V from the 6V for the system controller according to the
“H” signal input.
The main video signal decoding circuits operate on this voltage.

(4) Voltage for LCD (16V)

This voltage is output from the 16V regulator (IC904) by the STBY signal from the system controller (IC107).
The voltage is supplied to the LCD driver (IC401) of the LCD board (DR-83) via the main board.
This 16V output can be checked using Pin 6 of the check pin jig.

(5) Voltage for LCD/RGB decoder (12V)

This voltage is output from the 16V for LCD by the 12V regulator (IC103) on the main board.

(6) Voltage for audio circuit (9V)

This voltage is output from the 9V regulator (IC902) by the STBY signal from the system controller (IC107).
Used for the phase shift amplifier (IC501), EVR (IC502), headphone amplifier (IC503), etc.

(7) Voltage for halogen lamp (12V)

This voltage is supplied to the lamp by the LAMP ON signal from the system controller (IC107).
The F951 on the SE-49 board serves as an overcurrent prevention fuse. Normally, the lamp is damaged before the
fuse is cut.
If the LAMP HOUSE OPEN DET switch (S901) is not pressed (LAMP HOUSE: OPEN), the LAMP ON signal will
not be output. Therefore check this switch input.

(8) Voltage for fan motor (12V)

Power is supplied to the fan motor by the STBY signal from the system controller (IC107).
When the fan motor is unable to rotate due to the presence of foreign objects, the system controller detects that the
motor has stopped rotating according to the STOP SENSE signal, and sets the STBY signal to “L” (stop operations).

3. Signal Circuit
Refer to the block diagrams in the service manual for circuits.

(1) Detection of video signal input

The CPJ-PC200 is input with various video signals. The following describes the decoding process of the video
signals briefly.

(i) Input terminal

The CPJ-PC200 gives priority to S terminal inputs over video inputs. Therefore, when two cables are
connected, the S terminal input will be displayed on the screen.
When the S terminal cable is connected, the connection is detected by Pin 6 of the system controller (IC107)
(S_ID_IN terminal). (When S terminal is connected: “L”)
At this time, the switches (IC101, IC102, IC701) are switched by the “H” output of Pin 11 of IC107
(S_ID_OUT terminal), and the S terminal input is connected to the RGB decoding circuit.

(ii) Types of signals

The video/PC selector is switched according to the type of video signal (NTSC/PAL). When the selector is
switched, the switch (IC101, IC102, and IC701) is also switched.
The S video terminal output of VCO-200 is an NTSC signal.

(iii) Presence of video signals

As there is no V sync when there are no video signal inputs, the SYNC OUT output of the RGB decoder
(IC104) contains no signals. Therefore, the VDOUT output of the LCD driver (IC401) also contains no signals,
and the VDET terminal of the system controller (IC107) detects the no-signal state. (Refer to block diagrams in
the service manual.)
The system controller sets into the standby state when this state continues for more than 5 minutes.

(2) Y/C separation of video signal

(i) NTSC video signal

The Y/C signal is separated by the BPF composed of DL101, etc., and input to the RGB decoder (IC104).

(ii) PAL video signal

The Y/C signal is separated by the BPF composed of FL700, etc., and input to the RGB decoder.

(iii) S video signal

As this signal is Y/C separated from the beginning, it is input to the RGB decoder directly.

(3) RGB decoding

The Y/C signal is converted to the RGB signal inside the RGB decoder. Related circuits are described in the
description of RGB decoding.

(i) Color detection circuit (For PAL only)

Composed of Q702 to Q705, DL701, T701, RV701, IC700 (switch), etc.
When the video signal is converted to the RGB signal, the C signal of the PAL signal must be delayed by 1h
(horizontal line).
If the circuit is abnormal, symptoms such as ‘’no color” and ‘’abnormal color” occur during playback of the
PAL signal.

—9—
(ii) Luminance correction circuit (Contrast correction)
Theoretically, the four corners of the projector screen becomes dark, because the square screen is displayed
with a round lens. (The center is the brightest, growing darker the further the distance from this center)
To raise the luminance of the four corners, the HDOUT signal in the horizontal direction and the VDOUT
signal in the vertical direction of the screen are used. When these signals are passed through the LPF composed
of Q117 to Q122, and IC110, a signal output that increases the luminance of the top/bottom/left/right of the
screen is obtained.
This correction signal is input to Pin 42 of the RGB decoder (CONT terminal).

HDOUT signal Luminance RGB decoder

VDOUT signal correction circuit CONT input
Luminance

Luminance Screen

Fig. 4. Correction of Screen Luminance

(iii) Character generator

Outputs warning characters and volume displays on the screen. Outputs the RGB output of the warning
characters synchronized with HSYNC and VSYNC to the RGB decoder using the DATA signal from the
system controller (IC107).
If the adjustment of the PLL of the sync signals (CV101) is not performed correctly, the characters will not be
displayed properly.

(iv) TINT correction (For NTSC only)

TINT correction is performed when decoding the NTSC video signal.
RV109 is connected externally to Pin 13 of the RGB decoder (IC104) by the “H” input of Pin 6 of IC700
(switch).
When this circuit is abnormal, the color during NTSC signal playback will not be normal.

III. PRECAUTIONS IN DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY
1. Cabinet Section
(1) Lamp assembly.
Do not touch the insides of the lamp (insides of the cover) and valve with your fingers. If these parts become dirty,
heat is absorbed when the light of the lamp is reflected, the temperature increases, and as a result, the lamp life
shortens.

(2) Fan motor

The fan motor sends wind only in one direction. This direction is shown by the arrow mark on the side of the fan
motor.
Pay attention to this mark so that the fan motor is not attached in the opposite direction. If attached in the opposite
direction, the wind will not be sent normally and the internal temperature will rise excessively.

2. Lens Section
(1) Heat absorption filter
The heat absorption filter has a front and back side, of which one side has a special coating. This coating absorbs
infrared light to shut out the lamp heat.
The coated side appears red when slanted. It also has round edge.
Always attach the coated side as the halogen lamp side (opposite the lens block).

Fig. 5. Cross Section of Heat Absorption Filter

(2) Heat reflection filter

The heat reflection filter has a front and back side. As above, one side is coated. Attach so that the coated side is
the lens side (opposite the halogen lamp).

Fig. 6. Cross Section of Heat Reflection Filter

— 11 —
(3) Protection seal
(i) LCD Panel Module
New parts of the LCD panel module are pasted with protection seals on both sides. If these seals are not
removed, the screen will appear blur.
When the film becomes hot, smoke may be emitted in the worst case. Therefore always remove the seals.

(ii) Filter
One side of the reflection filter (coated side) is pasted with protective seal. Be sure to remove this seal when
using the unit.
If used without removing it, the lamp heat may cause smoke to be emitted.

(4) Dusts, finger prints

When replacing the LCD panel module, make sure there are no dusts nor finger prints on the filter and LCD panel
module.
If dirty, do not clean with alcohol as dirt cannot be removed completely. Use a lens cleaning paper for spectacles,
etc.
