INTRODUCTION
The International Electrotechnical Commission is the leading
global organization that prepares and publishes international
standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.
It was Founded in 1906 to promote international cooperation. These
standards serve as a basis for national standardization and as
reference when drafting international tenders and contracts.
The IEC covers a vast array of technologies in its
standardization and conformity assessment activities. Those
technologies cover the generation, transmission and distribution
of electricity, and the products and systems that use that
electricity.

OBJECTIVES OF IEC

• Meet the requirements of the global market efficiently.

• Assess and improve the quality of products and services
covered by its standards.
• Establish conditions for the interoperability of complex
systems.
• Increase the efficiency of industrial processes.
• Contribute to the improvement of human health and
safety.
• Help to ensure the protection of the environment.
ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE
IEC CERTIFICATION AND CONFORMITY ASSESMENT SYSTEMS
IEC certification and conformity assessment are essential for
ensuring the safety and quality of electrical and electronic
products and systems. The International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) is a global organization that develops and
publishes international standards for electrical and electronic
technologies.
IEC certification is a process in which a product or system
is tested and evaluated according to IEC standards to ensure that
it meets the safety and performance requirements. This
certification ensures that a product or system is safe to use and
meets the minimum requirements for quality.
Conformity assessment is a process used to verify whether a
product or system meets the requirements of a particular standard
or regulation. It involves testing, inspection, and certification
activities that are carried out by independent third-party
organizations. Conformity assessment ensures that a product or
system meets the applicable safety and performance requirements.
CONFORMITY ASSESSMENTS SYSTEMS
1. IECEE - IEC system of conformity Assessment Schemes for
Electrotechnical Equipment and Components.
2. IECRE - IEC System for Certification to Standard Relating to
Equipment for use in Renewable Energy Application.
3. IECEx - IEC Systems for Certification to Standards relating
to equipment for use in Explosive Atmosphere.
4. IECQ - IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic
Components.

IEC STANDARD
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) authors
international standards for all electrical, electronic and related
technologies. This standards collection addresses product development,
performance, compatibility and related topics in order to ensure product
compatibility and environmental safety.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) develops
and publishes international standards for electrical, electronic,
and related technologies. These standards cover a wide range of
topics, including:
• Electrical safety: The IEC sets safety standards for
electrical equipment, systems, and installations to protect
people and property from electrical hazards.
• Energy efficiency: The IEC develops standards for energy-
efficient products and systems to reduce energy consumption
and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
• Renewable energy: The IEC publishes standards for the design,
installation, and operation of renewable energy systems such
as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.
• Communication technology: The IEC sets standards for
communication technologies, including wired and wireless
networks, to ensure compatibility and interoperability
between devices from different manufacturers.
• Smart grids: The IEC publishes standards for smart grid
technologies, which aim to modernize the electricity grid by
using digital communication and control technologies to
optimize power generation, distribution, and consumption.
• Industrial automation: The IEC develops standards for
industrial automation systems, including programmable
controllers, sensors, and actuators, to improve efficiency
and productivity in manufacturing and other industries.
• Medical devices: The IEC sets standards for medical devices
to ensure their safety, reliability, and effectiveness.
• Environmental management: The IEC publishes standards for
environmental management systems to help organizations reduce
their environmental impact and improve sustainability.
This is an incomplete list of standards published by the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The numbers of
older IEC Standards were converted in 1997 by adding 60000, for
example IEC 27 became IEC 60027.
TECHNICAL REPORT

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) technical

reports are documents that provide information, guidance, and
recommendations related to various aspects of electrotechnology.
IEC technical reports cover a wide range of topics related to
electrotechnology, including:

• Standards development: IEC technical reports may provide

guidance on the development of new standards, including best
practices for drafting and reviewing standards documents.
• Emerging technologies: IEC technical reports may provide
information on new and emerging technologies in the field of
electrotechnology, including their potential benefits and
risks.
• Safety and performance: IEC technical reports may provide
guidance on safety and performance requirements for
electrotechnical products and systems, including testing and
certification procedures.
• Environmental impact: IEC technical reports may provide
information on the environmental impact of electrotechnical
products and systems, including recommendations for reducing
their environmental footprint.
• Market analysis: IEC technical reports may provide market
analysis and insights related to electrotechnical products
and systems, including trends and projections.

GUIDES
IEC Guides are a series of publications issued by the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provide
guidance on various aspects related to the development, use, and
application of electrotechnical standards. Some of the topics
covered by the IEC Guides include:

• Standardization: The IEC Guides provide guidance on the

process of standardization, including the principles and
methods for the development and use of international
standards in the electrotechnical field.
• Quality management: The IEC Guides provide guidance on the
application of quality management principles and techniques
in the development and implementation of electrotechnical
standards.
• Environmental management: The IEC Guides provide guidance on
the application of environmental management principles and
techniques in the development and implementation of
electrotechnical standards, with a focus on reducing the
environmental impact of products and services.
• Risk management: The IEC Guides provide guidance on the
application of risk management principles and techniques in
the development and implementation of electrotechnical
standards, with a focus on identifying and managing risks
associated with the use of electrical and electronic
equipment.
• Terminology: The IEC Guides provide guidance on the use of
standardized terminology in the electrotechnical field, with
the aim of improving communication and reducing confusion
among stakeholders.
• Intellectual property: The IEC Guides provide guidance on the
application of intellectual property principles in the
development and use of electrotechnical standards, including
issues related to patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

HOW IEC STANDARDS ARE DEVELOPED

The development of IEC standards involves a structured and
collaborative process that involves the participation of experts
from around the world. Technical Committees and Subcommittees
oversee the development of standards, with a drafting process that
includes several rounds of review and comment. The public comment
process is an important part of the development process, allowing
stakeholders to provide feedback on the standard before it is
finalized and approved by the IEC.

IEC AND GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) plays a
crucial role in promoting global sustainability and addressing
environmental challenges through the development of international
standards and conformity assessment systems. The IEC brings
together experts from around the world to develop and promote the
use of sustainable technologies, reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
promote energy efficiency, and improve environmental performance.
By establishing standards and guidelines for energy efficiency,
the IEC helps to reduce energy consumption and limit the
environmental impact of electrical and electronic products and
systems. Additionally, the IEC works to promote the safe and
responsible use of technology, including the management of
electronic waste and the reduction of hazardous substances in
electronic products.
