lerdi.
Manastır, genellikle yerleşim merkezleri dışın-
da; yüksek yamaçlara, ulaşılması güç yerlere
kurulurdu. Böylece hem inzivaya çekilmek için
uygun ortam yaratılır, hem de olası saldırılar-
dan uzakta kalınırdı.
Sümela’nın konumu da bu fikre mükemmel
bir örnek oluşturuyor. Günümüzde bile ulaşı-

Sümela Monastery is undoubtedly the most significant historical treasure
amongst the various monasteries located in Trabzon. The other monas-

on Black Mountain at an altitude of 300m.up from the valley, is not only
Trabzon’s most important heritage but one of Turkey’s foremost histori-
cal sites. An important leg of the country’s faith tourism, the monastery
is receiving many visitors from April to October. Furthermore, in the
last two years, vast religious ceremonies were held at Sümela under the
leadership of Bartholomeos, the Greek-Orthodox Patriarch of Phanar , in
the presence of many orthodox believers from Russia, Greece, Georgia
and the USA.

St. Petersburg is a magic city with its white nights, its historical
squares and large boulevards, called Venice of the north owing to its
canals. Yet the most salient feature of the city is certainly its Hermit-
age Museum attracting art enthusiasts from all over the world.
The Hermitage Museum founded by Czarina Catherine II, also known
as Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, is one of the world’s
largest and most significant museums. Its name originates from the
French word hermite (monk living in seclusion), hermitage meaning
place of retreat. Although reputed for her love affairs, the Empress
was also a religious person retreating at times into her private sanc-
tuary in the palace where she meditated surrounded by her favourite
books and works of art, her personal collection. Did she ever

The museum underwent a major
fire in 1837, was successfully evacu-
ated at that time, and rebuilt in strict
adherence to its original architecture
through a perfect technical perform-
ance for those years.
During the Second World War, the
greatest part of Hermitage collections
were transferred by trains to the town
of Sverdlovsk in the Ural mountains,
before the German siege of Leningrad.
The museum suffered damage from
artillery shells during the siege and was
afterwards repaired by Russian and
foreign craftsmen and inaugurated
once again in 1944, looking even more
magnificent than before. The collec-

to the museum in 1945.

Lack of time is the biggest problem of the 21st century humans. We
finish work at a given time, take our meals at given points in time. A few
minutes of delays possess the potential to adversely affect our entire
day or even our whole week. The time of our return home from work, the
time of our dinner are fixed according to schedule. In short, our lives’
every hour and even each minute is programmed. We keep looking at
our watches all the time…
Yes, but who are the people who invented these “time measuring de-
vices” which facilitate our life in many regards, but which keep us jumpy
and anxious throughout life at the same time?
Steps of Ra!
The first serious undertakings in order to measure time originated from
religious concerns. The obelisks appearing as early as in the 3500’s B.C.
in Egypt, were the ancestors of the later sundials.

Jesus Christ is depicted from his early childhood up to his adult age
when he offers miracles. On the dome located on the left side of the in-
ner narthex, Mother Mary holding Jesus child in her arms is surrounded
by holy figures. The other mosaic is depicting Mary as a young girl being
presented to the priest Zacharias.
A mosaic of enthroned Christ with Theodore Metochites presenting him
a model of his church is placed on the pediment of the main entrance.
Jesus is holding the Bible in his left hand while he gives the benediction
with his right hand.
At the chapel, one can admire the frescoes describing scenes from the
Old Testament, the Day of Judgment, the Resurrection, the Final Judg-
ment. The gigantic frames composed of thousands of mosaic pieces
smaller than one square centimetre each and various frescoes narrate
in finest detail the episodes from the holy books. The Chora Church
became a masterpiece of art through the dedicated work of architects,
mosaic masters and marble carvers. The mansions of wealthy and noble
citizens of Byzantium built around and near the Chora Church attributed
even a greater prestigious character to the neighbourhood.

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu, sadece hükmettiği ülkelerin genişliği,
askeri stratejisi ve görkemli saray hayatıyla anlatılır. Oysa
The Ottoman Empire is usually referred to in terms of the geographic extent of its territories, its
military strategies and the grandiose lifestyle of its palaces. Yet at the same time, the Ottomans
have created a genuine culture of life by blending the cultural heritage of the civilizations which
preceded them on the same soil with their own religious and social values. The colourful mosaic
stemming from the multinational character of the Empire was reflected on all aspects of life
from the most humble homes to the richest mansions and to lodgings and caravanserais in
the whole Ottoman geography. This blend of cultures left its mark in all fields, like
for instance, as much in the area of aesthetics as in the philosophical domain.
The book “Articles of daily life in the Ottoman era” written by author Şinasi Acar
and first published in 2011 by the YEM publishing house, follows the footprints
of Ottoman culture on the area of daily lifestyles through little objects among
which some are just artisanal handworks whereas others can be considered works
of art. A great variety of items to be admired in this book, from belt buckles to
rose water flasks, from incense-burners to seals and inkpots and pen-cases with
inkwell set the stage for a journey through history. A rose water flask is testimony
to the graceful hospitality tradition of the Ottomans in welcoming and treating
their guests with refinement, a belt buckle is witnessing to the level of artistic
perfection reached by Armenian jewellers and their Turkish apprentices. The pen
and inkpots lead to imagine the devoted spirit in which letters with one corner
burned were written, as signs reflecting the self-sacrificing approach to love of the
people of that era.

Yorgun Herkül heykelinin ABD’den getirilmesi İngiltere’deki British Museum’da sergi-
lenen Knidos Aslanı heykelini isteyen Datçalılar’a umut oldu. Muğla’nın Datça ilçesi-

izinle savaş gemisine konularak İngiltere’ye götürülen Knidos Aslanı ve Knidos Deme-
teri heykellerinin iade edilmesi için mücadele başlatan Datçalılar, Yorgun Herkül’ün
geri getirilmesiyle kampanya çalışmalarını hızlandırdı.
