EXPERIMENT 1
TITLE: Combination reaction

Fe + SO4 = FeSO4

OBJECTIVE

General objective: to clearly distinguish combination reaction from other types of chemical
reactions in real life situations.

Specific objective: to investigate about how these two different chemical substances form a
completely new substance altogether.

INTRODUCTION: a combination reaction occurs when two or more substances react to form a
single product.

A + B = AB

Materials

1. Watch glass
2. Spatula
3. Test tube
4. Test tube holder
5. Bunsen burner
Chemicals:

1. Sulfur powder (yellow)

2. Iron filling(grey)
PROCEDURE

1. We add three grams of sulfur powder(or one spatula)

2. We then add two grams (half a spatula) of iron filling and mix it in the watch glass.
3. After that, we put the mixture in the test tube.
4. Then using a test tube holder, we keep the mixture on the Bunsen burner.
Observation and result

After some time, we notice that the color starts to change into a dark brown, and we form Iron
sulfate in the end.

Conclusion

2|Page
We deduced that the iron from the filling and the sulfur powder would react with
the oxygen surrounding them and would create Iron sulfate by doing so. As this
was not an airtight experiment, the addition of oxygen in the equation is inevitable.

EXPERIMENT 2
TITLE: Decomposition reaction

Na2CO3 = Na2O + CO2

OBJECTIVE

General objective: to integrate this with real life experiences and identify when something used
to be a part of a whole.

Specific objective: to observe and synthesis on how compounds or reactants break down to
form the different substances they form.

INTRODUCTION: A decomposition reaction is a reaction in which one reactant is breaking down

into two or more substances. It is carried out by several things like light, heat, catalysts etc.

AB = A + B

Materials:

1. Red litmus paper

2. Bunsen burner
3. Test tube
4. Test tube holder
Chemicals:

1. Sodium Carbonate
Procedure

1. We take a clean test tube and put in a limited amount of sodium carbonate
2. We use the test tube holder and hold it over the Bunsen burner
3. After we wait for it for some time, we put a litmus paper and check whether it is an acid
or a basic chemical.
Observation and result

After we held the sodium carbonate over the Bunsen burner for some time, we take it out of
the Bunsen burner after being convinced that it’s heated enough. The next step we did was to

insert the litmus paper into the test tube. The litmus paper then slowly started to
turn blue.

Conclusion

From this experiment, we can conclude that since the litmus paper resulted in the blue color, it
is in fact a basic oxide. This occurrence is because salt turns basic when we put it over a Bunsen
burner.

EXPERIMENT 3
TITLE: Single displacement reaction

CUSO4 + Fe = FeSO4 + CU

OBJECTIVE:

General objective: to discover single displacement reaction in our daily life. For instance, it
is used in thermite welding and steel making.

Specific objective: to investigate whether the replacement power of Iron is greater than
copper or not.

INTRODUCTION: a single displacement reaction occurs when an element replaces another

element in a compound. A metal only replaces metal, and a nonmetal replaces only nonmetal.
Moreover, a more reactive element can replace less reactive element.

A + BC = AC + B

Materials chemical

1. Biker 1. Copper sulphate (CUSO4)

2. Iron steel
Procedures

1. We put the iron steel in the biker.

2. We poured copper sulphate (CUSO4)
Observation and result

The copper sulphate is turned into transparent (colorless).and the copper sunk down to the
bottom of the biker.

Conclusion

4|Page
Finally, we concluded that the Iron displaces the copper because the replacement
power of Iron is greater than that of copper. Due to this reason the colorless
solution is Iron Sulphate (FESO4).

EXPERIMENT 4

TITLE: double displacement reaction

Ba(NO3)2 + Na2SO4 = Na2(NO3)2 + BaSO4

Objective

General objective: to differentiate doble displacement reaction from other types of

reactions in real life. Best example foe this reaction is you can experience while baking when
you add baking soda and vinegar to the better and see vigorous bubbling.

Specific objective: to investigate how to different compounds form two different

compounds.

INTRODUCTION: a double displacement reaction is a type of reaction where part of one

reactant is replaced by part of another reactant.

AB + CD = AD + CB

MATERIALS chemicals

1. Spatula 1. Sodium sulphate (NaSO4)

2. Glass rod stirrer 2. Barium nitrate (Ba (NO3)2)
3. Biker 3. Water
4. Funnel
5. Conical flask
6. Filter paper
Procedures
1. We poured 40ml of water in two separate bikers.
2. We added one spatula of Sodium Sulphate into one of the biker to form sodium
sulphate solution.
3. We added one spatula of Barium Nitrate into the other biker to form Barium Nitrate
solution.
4. We mixed them.

5|Page
5. We added the mixture on filter paper by using a conical flask and
funnel.

Observation and result

The mixture formed milky white color. and the solution that existed in the conical flask is
Sodium Nitrate and. And on the filter paper remains Barium Sulphate.

Conclusion

Finally, we concluded that by combining two different compounds which are Barium Nitrate
and Sodium Sulphate to form two different compounds which are Sodium Nitrate and Barium
Sulphate. So, we called this type of reaction double displacement reaction.
