All M7 devices contain an internal Lithium-thionyl Chloride (Li-Ion) battery, and must be handled properly
during installation, normal use and removal.
Li-Ion cells contain a large amount of energy and react extremely violently when exposed to moisture in
the atmosphere. Risk of fire or explosion exists only if the battery is handled improperly and/or abused
mechanically, electrically or thermally. Proper handling means the battery must NOT be subjected to the
following conditions:
Short circuit
Puncturing
Recharging
Crushing
Incineration
Immersion in water
Exposure to temperature exceeding rated limits
Care must be taken, especially during installation and decommissioning, to ensure the units are not
punctured or crushed.
In the event of battery ignition, use ONLY Class D fire extinguishers on the flame. DO NOT USE: water,
sand, CO2, Halon, dry powder, or soda ash extinguishers.
For more information, consult the manufacturer Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for standard Lithium Thinoyl
Chloride batteries.
Lithium Ion batteries are often subject to local, state or provincial laws and regulations regarding
disposal. They cannot be simply disposed of in the trash. Check with your local landfill/recycling facility
for hazardous waste disposal requirements and safe disposal options.

holder rated for the voltage of the supply power and discreet signal inputs provided by
the machine to the M7. See section 2 for voltage rating considerations and section 6 for
details on where the fuse needs to be installed.
Although these optimal locations may not be easily achieved in some equipment, the M7 may be
mounted in other areas and orientations. For example:
o Vertically on the side of the machine
o Inside the equipment/machine with open view to the sky
Ie. Operator Cab
: IMPORTANT NOTE :
Avoid locations that limit communications such as inside metal control cabinets and areas
completely surrounded by metal.
Mount M7 in a location that does not expose it to potential physical damage when equipment is in
normal use.
Please contact ZTR Technical Support if you have any questions regarding mounting location. When
reaching out to ZTR Technical Support, providing pictures of the proposed mounting location would
greatly assist in helping to determine the best location.

ii. 2 x 8-32 nylon insert, Zinc hex nuts
NOTE: Do not tighten with more than 1.75 - 1.8 lb-ft of torque
6. Equipment Wiring
The M7 has a 12 inch harness cable with a mating 12 pin Deutsch connector that mates with the
machine harness that gets integrated with the machine. The following outlines the wiring of this
interconnect harness into the machine as it relates to the 12 pin Deutsch connector. Use Figure 1
as reference when performing the wiring needed for the installation
If the installation is a retrofit from an M8 to an M7, use the M8 to M7 adapter and be sure the M8
harness wiring matches the wiring instructions in section 6
NOTE: IF your machine operates at a supply voltage greater than 60 volts DC (ie. 72 volts), voltages
over 60 volts DC can damage the M7 digital and analog inputs. Please contact ZTR before
continuing.

FUSE REQUIREMENT: The M7 must be powered from a source that is fused at 3 Amps. It is
preferred that a 3 Amp blade fuse be used in line. Other methods may be used based on
equipment configuration.
NOTE: If the equipment has a battery disconnect, the wiring of the M7 power must come
BEFORE this disconnect so as to ensure power remains to the monitoring system when the
equipment is shut down, and the disconnect is open.
The M7 must be wired to a constant power source from the battery. The M7 can be powered
with up to 90 volts DC (DO NOT EXCEED THIS LIMIT)
Wire the Positive Power wire (RED) to the positive (+) DC power supply source
Wire the Ground wire (BLACK) to the negative (-) DC power supply source
Wire the BND Control wire (WHITE/BLACK) to a reliable Chassis Ground that will not decay
over time
o If the machine does not have a battery negative disconnect switch, the BND control wire
(WHITE/BLACK) can be connected to the negative (-) pole of the DC power supply source
NOTE: Failure to secure a good ground for the BND control wire (WHITE/BLACK) wire will not
allow the M7 to function properly. Result = None of the digital inputs will be detected and no
J1939 CAN Bus data will be captured (if applicable).
FUSE REQUIREMENT: The Key ON or Control Panel ON signal input to the M7 requires an
inline 3 Amp fuse.
The Key ON or Control Panel ON signal wire (WHITE) is to be wired to a positive voltage
source when the equipment is ready to be run (+12V, or +24V). This signal is used to enable
the CAN Bus functionality on the M7. A recommended source for this signal is a voltage
source that is ‘High’ (+12V, or +24V) when the Key or Control Panel is turned ON. Not to
exceed 60V DC or damage to the M7 will occur.
FUSE REQUIREMENT: The Engine Run signal to the M7 requires an inline 3 Amp fuse.
The Engine Run input wire (BLUE) is to be wired to a positive voltage source that supplies
positive voltage when the equipment is in a running state, and represents run time
accumulating on the hour meter (+12V, or +24V). Not to exceed 60V DC or damage to the M7
will occur.
D. WIRING OF J1939 CAN BUS:
J1939/CAN bus connection can be identified by the Green and Yellow twisted pair wires
located on the M7 harness CAN H (YYELLOW), CAN L (GREEN)
The J1939 connection works best on the Primary CANBus connection your machine uses to
communicate between the dash instrumentation and the main ECU. For assistance in
determining the best J1939/CAN bus connection to use, contact ZTR and be sure to provide a
copy of the asset’s schematics.
It may be required to connect the analog input wire (WHITE/BROWN) for a 0 – 60V DC signal to
obtain Fuel Level or some other analog signal source. This is usually a customer application
specific input that is predetermined prior to deploying the M7 on any particular machine. It will
require additional support from ZTR to capture the information that the analog signal would
provide if it has not already been pre-determined. Please contact ZTR for further assistance and
support if this signal and its format has not already been pre-determined.
7. Activation
In addition to the installation and testing of the telematics device, the installer is also responsible for
contacting their ONEi3 administrator to activate the M7. Activation of the M7 must be completed
before end-to-end functional testing can be accomplished successfully.
The following details about the equipment and M7 should be recorded and provided for activation as
a guideline:
ESN of the M7
Machine Make
Machine Model
Machine Serial Number
Machine Run Hours (for Non-CAN Bus enabled installations*)
Asset ID Number (if applicable)
*NOTE: For M7 installations where Run Hours are not available via J1939 data, it will be necessary to
enter the Run Hours for the machine in ONEi3 after the activation process is complete.
8. Testing
Prior to connecting the M7 to the machine harness, ZTR requires that the installer test the wiring
connections of the machine harness to ensure proper wiring for the M7 and its inputs. This test can
be performed with a digital multi-meter or the ZTR harness tester. See Appendix A. for more details
on the ZTR Harness Tester and whether it can be used in your application.
To test the wiring harness, we expect to see power on each of the appropriate pins within the
12-pin Deutsch connector. To accomplish this test, we assume the 12-pin harness is
disconnected from the M7. We also assume that the machine/equipment is powered up.
a. Test Requirements
For these tests, we will assume that the supply or signal voltage will either be +12 or +24
volts DC.
1) Power Supply Test: Measure for +12V or +24V DC between Pin 1 and Pin 2
(Positive Power and Ground)
2) Key or Control Panel ON Test: With the Key or Control Panel ON in the Active
state, measure for a +12V or +24V DC signal between Pin 2 (Ground) and Pin 4
(Key or Control Panel ON).
This test confirms that there is a proper signal present when equipment
Key or Control Panel is turned ON
3) Key or Control Panel OFF Test: With the Key or Control Panel in the OFF state,
verify that 0 Volts is measured between Pin 2 (Ground) and Pin 4 (Run Signal).
This test confirms that the Key or Control Panel ON signal is only active
when the equipment Key or Control Panel is in the ON state.
4) Engine Run Input Test: With the engine or equipment in a running state, measure
for a +12V or +24V DC signal between Pin 2 (Ground) and Pin 5 (Engine Run
Signal).
This test confirms that there is a utilization signal present when key-on
position is off or the utilization signal is off.
5) Engine Run Input Off Test: With engine or equipment in the OFF state, verify that
0 Volts is measured between Pin 2 (Ground) and Pin 5 (Utilization Signal).
This test confirms that the Engine Run signal is not present when engine or
equipment is NOT running.
6) CAN Bus Test: The CAN bus connection can quickly be verified with the Harness
Tester. The equipment must be on and running. See Appendix A for further
details.
7) Battery Disconnect Test: With power turned off and disconnects open, verify the
measured voltage between pin 2 (Ground) and pin 4 (Run Signal) as well as
between pin 2 (Ground) and pin 5 (Utilization Signal) are 0V DC
This test confirms that signals are not present with disconnect open
NOTE: If the testing results does not correspond to the expectations outlined above,
please check and verify your wiring. If you cannot resolve the problem, please contact
ZTR before continuing.

12-Pin Harness
Connect the 12-pin machine harness to the M7. Upon connecting the M7 to the 12-pin machine
harness, and having the equipment powered up, the Green GPS LED and the Orange Cellular LED
must illuminate (initially blinking). This indicates the M7 has successfully powered on. Refer to
Appendix B for details on the LED status patterns.
For the functional test portion of the installation, we will cover specific steps for the M7. This
testing is performed to confirm that the M7 is communicating properly and verify that the
following is being properly reported:
Provided that you have contacted your ONEi3 account administrator and verified the M7 has been
activated, you may use ONEi3 via your mobile device or work with your account administrator to
verify that the M7 is functioning end-to-end as expected.
a) Start the equipment for normal operation and let it run for 20 minutes.
b) After the equipment has been started, confirm that the status LED’s on the M7 are active.
Refer to Appendix B for LED status behavior and definitions.
a. Expected LED status behavior:
i. If J1939 CAN Bus is enabled, the RED LED will blink ON and OFF in 4 second
intervals
ii. If the cellular connection is enabled, the ORANGE LED will blink slowly at first,
then fast, and then stay ON when a good cellular connection is established
iii. The GPS GREEN LED will blink slowly at first, then fast, and then stay ON when
a good GPS satellite lock is established
c) Once the M7 is determined to be up and running, wait 5 to 10 minutes and then check the
asset in ONEi3 to see if it has communicated successfully. If there are any issues, contact
your account administrator to determine next steps.
NOTE: The M7 Low Battery Voltage alarm threshold is set to either 11V for a 12V DC
supply or 23.5V for a 24V DC supply. If it is necessary to have the threshold adjusted
otherwise, please contact your account administrator.
e) After 15 minutes, the M7 will have reported some interval data that includes a snapshot of all
parameters in their current state. Check ONE i3 and review the interval data that has been
received from the M7 to be sure the data makes sense according to the conditions of the run
test.
f) Once the interval data has been reviewed, turn the equipment off.
The Harness Tester may be used to validate installation wiring by hooking it up to the machine
harness via the applicable adapter. Please refer to the Harness Tester User Guide for specific
instructions on its use.
