CLASS-11 SUBJECT- PHYSICS (Thermometry and Thermodynamics) MM.- 40

1- READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS-
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics states that two systems in thermal equilibrium with a third system
separately are in thermal equilibrium with each other. The Zeroth Law clearly suggests that when
two systems A and B, are in thermal equilibrium, there must be a physical quantity that has the
same value for both. This thermodynamic variable whose value is equal for two systems in thermal
equilibrium is called temperature (T). Thus, if A and B are separately in equilibrium with
C, TA = TC and TB = TC. This implies that TA = TB i.e. the systems A and B are also in thermal
equilibrium. Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics leads to the concept of internal energy of a system. We
know that every bulk system consists of a large number of molecules. Internal energy is simply the
sum of the kinetic energies and potential energies of these molecules. A certain amount of heat is
supplied to the system’ or ‘a certain amount of work was done by the system its energy changes.
i) Three thermodynamic systems are at temperature of 50 0C. what can we say about them? (1)
a) Heat flows between them
b) It obeys Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
c) Temperature of one system will increase and temperature of remaining two will decrease
d) None of these
ii) Zeroth law of thermodynamics helped in the creation of which scale? (1)
a) Temperature
b) Heat energy
c) Pressure
d) Internal energy
iii) The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics can be used to: (1)
a. Compare the temperatures of two bodies
b. Determine the thermal equilibrium of two bodies
c. Measure the specific heat of a substance
d. All of the above

iii) State Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics (1)

iv) Define Internal energy of system. (1)

2- Directions: Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion and Reason. Each of
these questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is the correct answer. You
have to select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below.
(a) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the
assertion.
(b) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.
(c) If assertion is true but reason is false.
(d) If the assertion and reason both are false.
Each question carries 1 mark
(i) Assertion: The heat supplied to a system is always equal to the increase in its internal energy.
Reason: When a system changes from one thermal equilibrium to another, some heat is
absorbed by it.
(ii) Assertion : In isothermal process whole of the heat energy supplied to the body is converted
into internal energy.
Reason : According to the first law of thermodynamics ΔQ = ΔU.
(iii) Assertion : Specific heat capacity is the cause of formation of land and sea breeze.
Reason : The specific heat of water is more than land.
(iv) Assertion : A brass disc is just fitted in a hole in a steel plate. The system must be cooled to
loosen the disc from the hole.
Reason : The coefficient of linear expansion for brass is greater than the coefficient of linear
expansion for steel.
(v) Assertion : Reversible systems are difficult to find in real world.
Reason : Most processes are dissipative in nature
3- MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION-

(II) The internal energy of an ideal gas depends only upon:
(a) Pressure (b) Volume (c) Temperature (d) size of the molecules
(III) When steam is converted into water, internal energy of the system
(a) Increases (b) Decreases (c) Remains constant (d) Becomes zero
(IV) Which of the following phenomenon is reversible?
(a) Water fall (b) Charging of a battery (c) Rusting of iron by chemic (d) Production of
heat by rubbing of hands
(V) If a system goes from initial to final state without changing internal energy, then the heat
supplied to system is
(a) Fully utilised for doing work (b) Partially utilised for doing work by the system (c)
Partially utilised for doing work on the system (d) Not used for doing work
