Peds Discussion #2

Age: 5
1. Imagine your body being a water hose, the blood is like the water that flows through the
hose and your heart is the pump that pushes it through. Your blood pressure checks how
hard or soft your heart is pumping the blood through your body.
2. Ages 3-6 years old are in the Erikson stage of initiative vs guilt. The characteristics of
this stage include vigorous, intensive behavior, enterprise and strong imagination.
Children in this stage are guided by their inner voice. The favorable results of this stage
are direction and purpose.
3. Ages 2 to 7 years old are in the preoperational stage according to Piaget. The main
characteristic of this stage is egocentrism, or the inability to put oneself in the place of
another. Children in this stage cannot see things from any other perspective besides
their own and cannot reason beyond what is observable. Children develop intuitive and
transductive reasoning skills in this stage.
4. Give the child a teddy bear or stuffed animal and ask the child to hug the teddy bear
really tight and then to barely hug the teddy bear. Tell the child that his/her heart is like a
giant teddy bear that loves to give hugs. Blood pressure is like checking to make sure
the hugs are not too tight or not too loose.
5. I would involve the parent or the caregiver in my approach by also having them hug a
teddy bear or stuffed animal with the child as I was explaining the metaphor. I would also
check with the caregiver or parent to make sure that the child was interested in stuffed
animals and if not, I would change my approach to better suit the child and his/her
interests.
