A Written Report

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

ANTONIO PIGAFETTA (1491-1531)

- Italian adventurer and scholar from the Republic of Venice


- By order of King Charles I of Spain, he accompanied the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand
Magellan and his company on their voyage around the world.
-His travelogue became the main primary source in the interpretation of the history behind the
pre-colonial Philippines.
- His report was also a significant reference to the events preceding Magellan's arrival in the
Philippines, including his encounter with
local chiefs, his death at the hands of Lapulapu's men at the Battle of Mactan, and the deportation
of what remained of the fleet Magellan's armada departed from the islands.

CONTENT ANALYSIS:
THE FIRST VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD
● “The First Voyage around the World” was written in one of the 5 ships of the
Magallanes-Elcano expedition.
● King Charles V provided the Spanish fleet named Armada de Molucca which was led by
Magellan.

THE FIVE SHIPS:


1. Santiago
- This ship contained 32 crews and is under the command of Juan Serrano.
- It was the first ship that has been lost.
2. San Antonio
- This ship contained 60 crews and is under the command of Juan De Cartegana.
- It was the second ship that has been lost.
3. Concepcion
- This ship contained 43 crews and is under the command of Gaspar De Quesada
- The third ship that has been lost.
4. Trinidad
- This ship contained 55 crews and is under the command of Ferdinand Magellan.
- The fourth ship that has been lost.
5. Victoria
- This ship contained 43 crews and is under the command of Gaspar De Quesada,
soon led by Juan Sebastian Elcano
- The ship where Antonio Pigafetta is on board.
- The ONLY SHIP TO COMPLETE THE VOYAGE.

TIMELINE BEFORE REACHING THE PHILIPPINES

● PLANNING: March 22, 1518


- Ferdinand Magellan secures a contract from King Charles I of Spain to search for a
westward route to the Spice Islands or also known as Moluques, a region known for
valuable spices.
● DEPARTURE: September 20,1519
- Magellan's expedition departs from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain with a fleet of five
ships: Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, and Santiago. With 270 crews
● FINAL PREPARATIONS: October 1519
- After a month of journey, the fleet reached the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of
Africa, where they made final preparations for the long journey ahead.
● SAINT JULIAN: 1519
- During a month and day of the fleet journey suffered and felt the tantrums of magellan's
adventurous sea expedition voyage Found land and reached the port of Saint Julia
● MUTINY BETWEEN SHIP GALLEON: 1519: 1519
- The three galleon ship commander Mendoza, risada, and, Cartagena had a
misunderstanding with Ferdinand Magellan that led to an uprising
● SANTIAGO SHIP: October 21, 1520
- After leaving the san julian port the ship saintiago was broken by the high current and
storm.
● STRAIT OF MAGELLAN: October 21, 1520
- After leaving the san julian port the ship santiago was broken by the high current and
storm. After a year in South America The fleet enters the strait that Magellan names after
himself. The passage is narrow and treacherous, which caused them 38 Days to cross
October 1520: After a month the commander of saint Antonio ship decided to go back in
Spain with his crew.
● RETURNING OF SAINT ANTONIO SHIP: October 1520
- After a month the commander of saint Antonio ship decided to go back in Spain with his
crew
● PACIFIC OCEAN: NOVEMBER 1520
- Magellan was amaze with the peaceful and calmness which later on he named ocean
Mar Pacifico (Tanquil or calm). Because of the vastness of the Pacific Ocean It took
them 99 days to cross it.
● ISLAND OF THE THIEVES: March 6,1521
- They got resupply of foods and supply but unfortunately the fleet though that the guam
natives are stealing from them which resulted for them to burned their home before
leaving the island and called it Ladrones Islands or the “Islands of the Thieves”

● MARCH 16, 1521: ARRIVAL IN SAMAR


● MARCH 31, 1521: FIRST MASS IN THE PHILIPPINES
● APRIL 7, 1521: ARRIVAL IN ZUBU
● APRIL 14, 1521: HELD MASS WITH RAJA HUMABON
● APRIL 27 , 1521: BATTLE OF MACTAN
● APRIL 28, 1521: DEATH OF MAGELLAN

CONTRIBUTION AND RELEVANCE TO THE PHILIPPINE HISTORY

● -The document contributed to the field of Geography, Navigation, and History.


Contribution and Relevance of the Document to Understanding Grand Narrative of
Phillipine History
● -Described the barter trade during the colonial period
● -Let us know the funeral practices and beliefs during the pre-colonial period
● -Record of physical appearance of early Filipino
● -Showed the 'nationalism" of Lapulapu and Filipino people before, it also showed how
wise and prepared they fought against the voyagers.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Antonio Pigafetta's role in the first circumnavigation of the globe has great
historical significance. His detailed documentation has given later generations invaluable insight
on the difficulties and outcomes of this remarkable voyage. Pigafetta's work continues to inspire
the spirit of exploration and the enduring human quest to unravel the mysteries of the world.
