Environmental Science
Field of science that studies the
interactions of the physical,
chemical, and biological
components of the environment
and also the relationship and
effects of these components with
the organisms in the
environment.
Environmental Science
Brings together the fields of
ecology, biology, zoology,
oceanography, atmospheric
science, soil science, geology,
chemistry and more in a
interdisciplinary study of how
natural and man-made processes
interact with one another and
ultimately affect the various
biomes of Earth.
Main Goals
To determine how we affect
To understand how we as the environment and
To learn how the natural
humans interact with the findings ways to deal with
world works
environment these effects on the
environment

Evaluating alternative energy

systems, pollution control and Bringing a system
mitigation, natural resource approach to the analysis of
management, and the effects environmental problems
of global climate change
Ecology
Study of the relationships
among organisms and their
environment
Levels of Organization
Biomes – major regional or global community of organisms
characterized by the climate conditions and plant
communities that thrive there
Ecosystem – all of the organisms
Community – group of different species that live together in
one area
Population – group of the same species that live in one area
Individual - organism
Biome
● large community of plants and animals that occupies a
distinct region defined by its climate and geography
Biome
Ecosystem
Includes both living
(biotic) and non-living
(abiotic) factors
Keystone species

Have a usually large effect on its ecosystem

Biogeochemical Cycles
Most common elements associated with
organic molecules: carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen,
phosphorus, sulfur
SEATWORK NO. 1
Across
2 group of different species that live together in one area Down
5 refers to organisms 1 this includes pods, lakes, streams and rivers, and a vital
7 characterized by excessive plant and algal growth due to source of drinking water
the increased availability of one or more limiting growth 3 process of water movement through plants and its
factors needed for photosynthesis evaporation from aerial parts such as leaves, stems, and
9 an essential nutrient for living processes flowers
10 species that can be any organisms that holds a habitat 4 process where water is released from clouds in the form
together of rain
11 refers to the rain that has lower level of pH that is usually 6 microbial process of reducing nitrate and nitrite to
4-5 on average gaseous forms of nitrogen
14 it enters the atmosphere from the decomposition of 8 conversion of carbon dioxide gas to organic carbon, and
organic molecules, from volcanic activity and geothermal respiration recycles the organic carbon back into carbon
vents dioxide gas
15 major regional or global community of organisms 9 group of the same species that live in one area
characterized by climate conditions and plant 12 coldest among the terrestrial biomes
communities 13 compound which has the chemical formula NH4
17 non-living factors 16 study of the relationships among organisms and their
21 phase change from solid to gas environment
22 these organisms convert ammonium into nitrites and 18 refers to the living organisms
then nitrates 19 consists of all the organisms
23 involves the movement and transformation of chemical 20 chemical process in which a substance reacts rapidly
elements and compounds between living organisms with oxygen and gives off heat
24 compound that has a chemical formula of NO3
