PRESENTATION
ON

MEANS
OF
TRANSPORTATION
Introduction
• Transport is the
movement of humans,
animals, and goods
from one location to
another. In other words,
the action of transport
is defined as a particular
movement of an
organism or thing
• Modes of transport include
air, land (rail and road),
water, cable, pipeline, and
space. The field can be
divided into infrastructure,
vehicles, and operations.
• Transport enables trade
between people, which is
essential for the
development of civilizations.
HISTORY OF TRANSPORTATION

• The history of transportation generally begins from the

human era and continues to change over a period of time. The
first means of transportation was the foot of human beings.
People used to walk very large distances to reach places
earlier. The first improvement that was made to this kind of
transportation was adapting to different surfaces as well.
For example, we can say that the people who are living in
areas with snow and ice, wore spike-like attachments which
were there so that they didn’t slip on the ground.

• There are people who knew that the logs

and the trees float on water and so they
dug out the portion that is in the middle of
logs to form a kind of seating. This helped
people a lot and allowed for water bodies
to be used as a means of transport.
Evolution of Transport Technology since the 18th
Century
• Evolution of Transport Technology since the 18th CenturySince the 18th century, mechanization allowed
each transportation mode to experience an evolution in motive methods and vehicles. New engine
technologies offer the ability to be used across several modes with specific adaptations. The first most
meaningful innovation was the steam engine that improved the performance of the maritime and
railway modes at the end of the 18th century. The bulk of a steam engine made it impractical to be
applied to road transportation.

• The internal combustion engine (ICE) in the late 19th century brought the large-scale mechanization of
transportation modes, especially road transport. It was followed by the diffusion of cars, buses, and trucks
supported by the construction of vast highway networks. For rail, diesel locomotives replaced steam engines,
improving power and range. However, the development of high-speed rail (HSR) relied on the electric motor due to
its capacity to generate a velocity that an internal combustion engine would be unable to.
Means of Transportation
By Water
Water transportation is the intentional movement of water
over large distances. Methods of transportation fall into three
categories:

Aqueducts, which include pipelines, canals, tunnels and bridges

Container shipment, which includes transport by tank truck,
tank car, and tank ship.
Towing, where a tugboat is used to pull an iceberg or a large
water bag along behind it.
Due to its weight, the transportation of water is very energy-
intensive. Unless it has the assistance of gravity, a canal or
long-distance pipeline will need pumping stations at regular
intervals. In this regard, the lower friction levels of the canal
make it a more economical solution than the pipeline. Water
transportation is also very common in rivers and oceans.
