Chadwick is best known for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. A neutron is a particle with no electric
charge that, along with positively charged protons, makes up an atom's nucleus. Bombarding elements
with neutrons can succeed in penetrating and splitting nuclei, generating an enormous amount of
energy.
Democritus
Around 400 B.C.E., the Greek philosopher Democritus introduced the idea of the atom as the basic
building block matter. Democritus thought that atoms are tiny, uncuttable, solid particles that are
surrounded by empty space and constantly moving at random.Nob 8, 2018
Henri Becquerel
Henri Becquerel, in full Antoine-Henri Becquerel, (born December 15, 1852, Paris, France—died August
25, 1908, Le Croisic), French physicist who discovered radioactivity through his investigations of uranium
and other substances. In 1903 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie.
Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding the structure
of atoms and to the early development of quantum mechanics. In particular, he developed the Bohr
model of the atom (and later the “liquid drop” model) and the principles of correspondence and
complementarity.
Ernest Ruhterford
Ernest Rutherford postulated the nuclear structure of the atom, discovered alpha and beta rays, and
proposed the laws of radioactive decay. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908.Dis 15, 2017
