Only he who toils and ____________
Will ________ and keep his own.

“Our ________ forever!”

May this be our cry,
“For thy ____ to live!
For thy sake to ____”!

Lesson Proper: Hear me out!

We boost our listening skills not for the mere purpose of comprehension, but also to achieve a successful
communication and interaction. Without listening comprehension, there can be no conversation, no
communication. We do not simply listen just to hear. We listen with a purpose.

Here are some purpose of listening:

1. Listening for the main idea – the purpose of this listening is to grasp the main points and information
presented. Being able to determine the main idea helps you build your listening comprehension. Some
listeners struggle with locating the main idea when they think they need to understand the speaker’s
every word. As a tip, get only the gist and disregard unnecessary words. If you already gathered the
main idea, stop listening rigorously, the ideas might entangle in your mind which can cause confusion.
2. Listening for detail – the purpose of this listening is to comprehend specific information and details
that are necessary. Your goal is to obtain information you need like dates, names, hours, etc. Before
listening prepare a short list of questions of the what, when, where, how, type; by this strategy you can
easily note the specific details.
3. Listening for detailed understanding – the purpose of this listening is to understand all the
information the text provides.

Listening Strategies
Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated by your limited understanding.
Here are a few courses of action you can take:

 Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
 Stay relaxed when you do not understand -- even if you continue to have trouble understanding for a
while.
 Do not translate into your native language.
 Listen for the gist (or general idea) of the conversation. Don't concentrate on detail until you have
understood the main idea(s).

Suggestions for improving your listening skills:

Before you listen

 Think about the topic of the text you are going to listen to. What do you already know about it? What
could possibly be the content of the text? Which words come to mind that you already know? Which
words would you want to look up?
5
 If you have to do a task on the listening text, check whether you have understood the task correctly.
 Think about what type of text you are going to listen to. What do you know about this type of text?
 Relax and make yourself ready to pay attention to the listening text.

While you are listening

 It is not necessary to understand every single word. Try to ignore those words that you think are less
important anyway.
 If there are words or issues that you don't understand, use your general knowledge as well as the context
to find out the meaning.
 If you still don't understand something, use a dictionary to look up the words or ask someone else for
help.
 Focus on key words and facts.
 Take notes to support your memory.
 Intonation and stress of the speakers can help you to understand what you hear.
 Try to think ahead. What might happen next? What might the speakers say, which words might they
use?
After listening
 Think about the text again. Have you understood the main points?
 Remember the assumptions you made before you listened. Did they come true?
 Review your notes.
 Check whether you have completed your task correctly.
 Have you had any problems while listening? Do you have any problems now to complete your task?
Identify your problems and ask someone for help.
 Listen again to difficult passages.

Points to Ponder
Listening is the one skill that you use the most in everyday life. Listening comprehension is the basis for
your speaking, writing and reading skills. To train your listening skills, it is important to listen actively, which
means to actively pay attention to what you are listening to. Make it a habit to listen to audio books, podcasts,
news, songs, etc. and to watch videos and films in the foreign language.
You should know that there are different types of listening:
 Listening for main idea: you listen in order to understand the main idea of the text.
 Listening for detail: you want to find out specific details, for example key words.
 Listening for detailed understanding: you want to understand all the information the text provides.
Assessment

following questions. No cheating!

The Story of Aliguyon
(Ifugao Epic)
All people are equal. We have different languages, customs, traditions and religions.

In the place of Banaue Terraces, there lived Aliguyon, a proficient warrior. He was the son of
Antalan who was also a very good warrior. The son learned so much from the father. He started with
hard soil near his home. His first weapon was a top with his playmates. Aliguyon defeated all his
playmates.

The teachings of Antalan were in different wisdom – singing of brave warriors, praising gods of
warriors, and uttering words of praises.

Antalan, the father, inculcated in the mind and heart of Aliguyon the importance of bravery and
strength. The father planned revenge against Pangaiwan, his enemy who lived near town.

When Aliguyon was ready for revenge, he got his warriors to look for Pangaiwan.

Instead of finding Pangaiwan, he found Dinoyagan, the son who was a great warrior too.

It was a son to son fight. Both were excellent warriors especially in holding weapons of bow and
arrow.

Aliguyon threw the arrow to Dinoyagan but the weapon was caught. Dinoyagan threw the arrow to
Aliguyon and as expected, the weapon was caught, too. Both warriors were magnetized with the
enemy’s powerful strength.

Days, months, and years passed. No one was wounded nor defeated.

The two warriors stopped, hugged, and shook hands that showed friendship.

The warriors became closer when Aliguyon got married to Bugan, the sister of Dinoyagan.
