of emotions in (1) and (2)? frustration, jealousy, ego, fear, sorrow, despair and the like.
In modern times, Peter Salovey, now President of Yale, and John
Mayer of the University of New Hampshire, first coined the term Emotional Intelligence in 1990. The
term emotional intelligence has become hugely popular since then. HBR has carried numerous reports
on it and Daniel Goleman’s book, “Emotional Intelligence” has sold 5 million copies and it has been
translated into 50 languages.
Emotional intelligence is an intellectual inquiry to fundamentally understand the importance of
emotions within oneself and in others with obvious implications for leadership while emotional
excellence is the wherewithal of how to bring about the required positive changes from within.
Ancient seers recognized the importance of emotions eons ago. In the Puranic stories of Paratpara
Shiva and Adyashakti, Adyashakti takes on several forms to destroy the demons of specific negative
emotions (Madhu-Ketab, Shumbh-Nishumbh, Raktabeej, Mahishasura). According to Wikipedia,
there are 51 Shakti Peethas dedicated to Goddess Kali, the destroyer of negative emotions, in India.
Bhakti yoga focuses on devotion to God but bhakti does not come naturally to everyone. Sadhana
(meditation), or more generally Raj yoga, too can achieve higher levels of emotional excellence.
In the eighteen chapters of the Bhagvad Geeta, Sri Krishna prods Arjuna, and through him, humanity,
to engage in the struggle to rise in emotional excellence and teaches him how to do so with the various
yoga paths.
Emotional excellence, self-awareness, and intuition are strongly and positively correlated. They are
understood to be critical components of leadership. Says Daniel Goleman in HBR, IQ and technical
skills are important but emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership. A rising level of
emotional excellence is accompanied by a higher level of intuition, and vice versa.
Self-awareness and mindfulness have also become popular in the United States. Both are important in
their own right but intuition is a cut above them.
Intuition is immediate cognition without the need for the rational mind and the five senses. Intuition is
important to leadership as leaders are often called upon to make split-second decisions.

We all have a certain level of intuition but the accuracy is generally too low to be of practical value.
Universal Peace Foundation, the nonprofit organization of my Guru, H. H. Gurumahan, offers a yogic
program to strengthen intuition among children to a point it becomes possible for them to do numerous
tasks (like identifying colors, reading, writing, drawing, finding hidden objects, identifying parents in
a crowd, bike riding) blindfolded which means their intuitive faculty has shot up. See this video clip
for a demonstration.
The seven-day training program itself is the result of intuition. It cannot be a product of the rational
mind as no branch of science has the tools with which to design such a program.
Gurumahan suggests that there is a link of intuition to the hormone, melatonin. The peak melatonin
levels drop as we age, and therefore, training needs to be given at a young age. The training program
is for children between about 8 to 13 years of age.
Parents, children, and teachers cite numerous benefits of the program. They include improved
concentration and academic performance, better interpersonal relationships with parents, teachers, and
other students, etc., all elements of emotional excellence.
Some 350 Indian children have been trained so far. Ten German children were to travel to India for
this training but the program had to be postponed on account of the pandemic.
Gurumahan himself hasn’t undergone this type of training but he possesses a very high level of
intuition and emotional excellence. His source of these capabilities is meditation. He has been going
into three weeks of meditation with no food annually for world peace for the past thirty years.
A scientific measurement device for emotions attests to the efficacy of the meditation practice that an
aspirant is using. This gives the aspirant the confidence that the practice is working and can serve as
an inspiration to continue with the practice regime.
Two measurement devices for emotions are available. One, called EQ Radio, uses wireless radio
frequency signals, while the second, which goes by the name Bio-Well, uses a harmless electrical
current applied to the fingers of both hands, one at a time. The finger’s response to the electrical
stimulus is a burst of photons which are captured by the digital computer and analyzed with software
to provide an inferential estimate of emotions. The method is noninvasive, painless, and takes only a
couple of minutes. Bio-Well is based on the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) principle. The GDV
technology is registered with the FDA, EU, and the Russian Ministry of Health. See this video clip for
how the measurement is made.
In closing, emotional excellence is well worth pursuing as success will bring a myriad of benefits
including exemplary performance, enhanced intuition, creativity & innovativeness, health & wellness,
interpersonal skills, and less discord. It is a pathway towards a better and more peaceful world.
