ES 13 WFV PROB SET 1

Date given: June 29, 2011

Due: July 08, 2011 (Friday) at class hour

Instruction: Answer the following questions on letter-sized (8.5”x11”) paper or A4

(8.27”x11.69”), preferably recycled (i.e. one side already used). Only one side of every
sheet of paper shall be used to write your solutions to the problems.

I. Stresses (choose 2 of 4 problems. 5 pts each)

1. Redo Section 1.8 of Beer and Johnston 4th ed on page 12. But this time, change the figure to
the one shown below.

a. Determine the Normal stress in boom AB and Rod BC

b. Determine the Shearing stresses in various connections
c. Determine the Bearing stresses in various connections

2. Two bars support a load as shown in the figure. Determine:

a. Maximum load P that can be supported at B if the factor of safety should be 1.50. Bar (1)
is in compression while Bar (2) is in tension.
b. Applying maximum load P, what is the resulting normal and shearing stresses at plane a-
a’?

3. Strut BC is connected to rigid bar ABD. A concentrated load P is applied to point D with a
magnitude of 100 kN. Given that the allowable shearing stress for the pins is 150 MPa and
the allowable normal stress for strut BC is 300 MPa, compute the area required for the strut
and the diameter required for each pin to be able to carry the load safely.

4. Steel plates B and C are fully glued to member A thus, forming a compound member as
shown in the figure. This will be used to punch two holes in a 12-mm thick wooden plank. If
the maximum average shearing stress in the glue is 570 MPa, and the allowable normal
stress in member A is 800 MPa, (thickness of A, B, and C is 25 mm) determine:
a. Pmax that can be applied to the compound member.
b. Is this force Pmax enough to punch holes in the plank if the failure shearing stress in the
plank is 750 MPa?

II. Strain (choose 2 of 3 problems. 5 pts each)
1. Problem 2-28 of Hibbeler, R.C. Mechanics of Materials, 4th edition, International edition
Note: Please make sure that you take the problem on the specified edition because
sometimes, the numbering differs for varying editions.

2. Bars AB and CD are attached to a plate BDEF that is supported by a wall. With the
application of loads P and Q, point A moves by 4 mm to the right and point C moves by 2
mm downwards as both bars retain their orientations. If there is an observed normal strain of
0.005 in bars AB and CD, determine the normal strain along segment BE and shear strains
at points B and D.

3. A force P was applied at end A of string AB resulting to a normal strain of 0.009 on the
string. Point A translates to the left by 15 mm. Simultaneously, plate G is heated causing a
shear strain at point E on the plate equal to 8(10-3) radians. If member BCD is rigid and
there is a 0.5 mm clearance at connection E, find the resulting normal strain on member DE.
III. Material Properties (choose 2 of 3 problems. 5 pts)
1. Problem 3-6 of Hibbeler, R.C. Mechanics of Materials, 4th edition, International edition
In addition, determine approximately the following:
a. Modulus of resilience,
b. Modulus of elasticity
c. Ultimate stress
d. Fracture stress

Note: Please make sure that you take the problem on the specified edition because
sometimes, the numbering differs for varying editions.

2. A square plate in the figure on the right has z

the following dimensions before normal
stresses are applied: Lx = Ly = 160 mm,
t=20 mm. Its Poisson’s ratio, ν = 0.283, and
its modulus of rigidity, G = 30 GPa. It is
then subjected to normal stresses on ALL
its faces and deforms.
a) If the normal stresses are σx = 444 MPa,
σy = 222 MPa, and its new length along
the x-direction is 160.8437 mm, find σz.
y
b) Find the new thickness of the plate, t’.

c) Find the new length along the y – direction

3. A bar made of A-36 steel (E = 200 GPa, v = 0.32) has the dimensions as shown. If an axial
force of P = 80 kN is applied to the bar, determine the change in its length and the
dimensions of its cross section after applying the load. The material behaves elastically.

Sir J.U. Tan Tian

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the
years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”…Now all has been heard; here
is the conclusion of the matter: Fear [love] God and keep His commandments, for this is the
whole of man.”(Eccl 12:1, 13)
