sectors
Unlocking of Difficulties
1
In our previous lesson, we have discussed intersubjectivity and how a person can
establish a genuine dialogue with others if we only learn to acknowledge their presence
and treat them as equals.
It is because humans have a natural tendency to reach out to others and engage in
meaningful interactions. However, discrimination and disliking of others are usual
occurrences too in building social relationships. For Levinas, this is due to Totalization.
The people we might have encountered did not pass our ‘standards’ or did not appear to
what we have expected them to be. Hence, it brings us uncomfortable feelings which often
resulted in treating them unfairly.
For instance, there are people like persons with disabilities and those underprivileged
people who experience to be totalized because of their situation; even so, they have proven
many times that they can do something beyond what we think is their capacity. An
example of this is Mang Romy, a PWD from Antipolo City who donated the hard-earned
money that he gathered from begging to the victims of typhoon Ulysses. Some will only
see how Bayanihan spirit is manifested in this story but there is more from it; it also
shows how can someone like him, a PWD and underprivileged who is in need too, go all
out of his way to extend help.
Here are other examples of people who, despite their disabilities, live a meaningful life.
Helen Keller The first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor’s degree. She
became a humanitarian, educator, and author. She
published an autobiography, Story of My Life, which
describes her life and struggles growing up.
Nicholas James Vujivic He was born with phocomelia, a condition in which a person
is born with no arms and feet. Nevertheless, he became a
world-renowned motivational speaker, author, and founder
of, Life without Limbs, a non-profit ministry that aims to help
people who have the same situation.
Roselle Ambubuyog The first visually impaired Filipina who graduated summa
cum laude at Ateneo de Manila University.
These stories will remind us that these people thought they may sometimes be
perceived to be less because of what they lack; still, they can be someone if we only learn
to appreciate them as a person with infinite possibilities and give them the chance to
prove themselves.
