Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to do the following
with 75% level of performance:
1. Define quartiles.
2. Illustrate quartiles for ungrouped data.
3. Solve problems involving quartiles for ungrouped data.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Quartiles for Ungrouped Data
References: Mathematics Learner’s Module 10, pp. 366-369
Next Century Mathematics 10, pp. 463-471
Materials: Slide Presentation, Cut-out Pictures, Chalkboard
Values Integration: Accuracy, Consistency
III. Learning Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
B. Drill
 The students will identify the different symbols used in statistics.
C. Review
 What are the different measures of central tendency?
 How to identify mean, median and mode for ungrouped data?
D. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
 4Pics1Word
Do you know the game 4pics1word?
Look at the four pictures and tell me what is the word that
links them together. Now, whoever gets the correct answer
will receive a prize.
2. Presentation of the Lesson
 Have you thought of comparing your academic performance
with that of your classmates?
 How do you compare yourself with other with regard to your
academic performance?
 We have a method of identifying the position of one’s score to
another. And this is what we call the measures of position.
Student’s Activity:

 Ask the students about their scores in previous quiz.

 Can you arrange the data in ascending order? Then, identify the
middle score from the set of data. What do you call this middle
score?
 What do you call the one part of four? Each quarter is
equivalent to how many percent?
 Based on your answer, can you give me your guess about our
topic for today?
 Present the different methods on how to compute the quartiles
for ungrouped data.
E. Generalization
 What is quartile?
 How to identify first quartile, second quartile and the third quartile?
 What are the formulas in getting the quartiles for ungrouped data?
F. Application
Answer the following:
1. The no. of toys each of John’s friends has are 20, 17, 15, 12, 22, 7.
Find the lower and middle quartile on the data set.
2. A group of students obtained the following scores in their statistics
quiz: 7, 12, 8, 9, 3, 6, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11. Find the first and
third quartile on the data set.
IV. Evaluation
Answer the following:
1. The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who
came into his café each hour in a day. The results were 14, 10, 12,
9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, and 10. Find the lower and upper quartile of
the data.
2. Find Q1, Q2, and Q3 for the following set of scores of 10 students:
24, 29, 30, 16, 20, 22, 28, 21, 19, 27

Rubrics for Problem Solving:

5 – The computations are accurate and show a wise use of key concepts
of quartiles for ungrouped data.

4 – The computations are accurate and show the use of key concepts of
quartiles for ungrouped data.
3 – The computations are erroneous and show some use of key concepts
of quartiles for ungrouped data.

2 – The computations are erroneous and do not show some use of key
concepts of quartiles for ungrouped data.

1 – Attempted to solve the problem.

V. Assignment
What is theQ1, Q2 and Q3 for the data set?
2, 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 6, 7, 8, 17, 23, 24, 19, 22, 22, 23,
9
