SCIENCE 10 WEEK 2

Opening prayer
LORD, TRUE SOURCE OF LIGHT AND WISDOM, GIVE US A
KEEN SENSE OF UNDERSTANDING, A RETENTIVE MEMORY
AND THE CAPACITY TO GRASP THINGS CORRECTLY. GRANT
US THE GRACE TO BE ACCURATE IN OUR EXPOSITIONS AND
THE SKILL TO EXPRESS OURSELVES WITH THOROUGHNESS
AND CLARITY. BE WITH US AT THE START OF OUR WORK,
GUIDE ITS PROGRESS AND BRING IT TO COMPLETION.
GRANT THIS THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD, AMEN.
O bjectives for biodiversity, stability and carrying capacity

UNDERSTAND Explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of
organisms ion changing environments

LEARN Explain the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity

KNOW Suggest ways to minimize human impact on the environment

BIODIVERSITY AND STABILITY

Stability - ability of an
ecosystem to maintain its
normal condition amidst
changes in the conditions of the
environment.

Known as the resistance

stability.
BIODIVERSITY AND STABILITY

Stability - ability of an
ecosystem to recover and
return to its original condition
after a disturbance.

Known as the resilience

stability.
Biodiversity andS tability
Stability is affected by two factors: growth factors and reduction factors. These
factors serve as a system of checks and balances in the ecosystem. They help
maintain stability in the ecosystem.

Growth factors - increase population size

Reduction factors - decrease population size

T HE MORE ADAPTATIONS THE
ORGANISMS HAVE, THE GREATER
THE CHANCES OF SURVIVAL
MORPHOLOGICAL
ADAPTATION
form, shape, color of the
organisms. For example, the
shape of the bird helps it to fly.
STRUCTURAL
ADAPTATION
structures or parts of the body
of an organism
PHYSIOLOGICAL
ADAPTATION
function of an organism
BEHAVIORAL
ADAPTATION
what an organism does and how
the organism does it.
COMMUNITY
RELATIONSHIPS
interactions established by
some organisms with other
organisms in the struggle for
survival.

C arrying Capacity
POPULATION GROWTH RATE

how fast the population grows

EXPONENTIAL
POPULATION GROWTH
has a J-shaped curve; occurs
when the growth rate is
proportional to the population
size.

Note that the population grows

slowly in the beginning and then
increases very quickly. The
growth slows/stops when there
are factors that limit/ slow down
the population growth.
LOGISTIC
POPULATION
GROWTH
has a S-shaped curve; occurs
when the population growth
stops/slows down after an
exponential growth.

It stops at a point called carrying

capacity.
CARRYING CAPACITY
maximum number of organisms
that can be supported by the
environment for the long term.

factors such as water, energy,

oxygen, and nutrient availability
are the limiting factors. when the
population reaches the carrying
capacity, the resources become
scarce
Carrying capacity
more births occur than deaths in environment with plenty of
nutrients; the population reaches the carrying capacity in a
short period of time
Remember to include relevant information
when the population exceeds the carrying capacity, more
that will encourage people to restore and
protect biodiversity.
deaths occur because the resources can no longer support all
the organisms, the population falls below the carrying capacity
as the organisms die
DENSITY -
DEPENDENT LIMITING
FACTOR
It refers to any factors in the
environment that depends on
the population density.

BIOTIC FACTORS: predators,

diseases, parasites and
competition
DENSITY -
INDEPENDENT
LIMITING FACTOR
It refers to the abiotic factors of
the environment

ABIOTIC FACTORS: natural

calamities such as typhoons,
drought, flooding, tornadoes and
volcanic eruptions.
Minimizing human impact on the environment
People give solutions to the problems of our environment, but
sometimes neglect that humans are also part of the problem. Our
irresponsible actions have resulted in the decrease or loss of
biodiversity and the degradation of our environment.

How can the impact of human actions be reduced?

How can we save our environment?
C losing prayer

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE SON, AND

TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.

AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW, AND EVER

SHALL BE, WORLD WITHOUT END. AMEN
