For each frame, have an oral discussion with students as to what they think is happening. Write the numbers 1-9 on the board, and for each frame number, write the main idea and verb(s) as provided by the students * Read the story on “page 2” to the students slowly. © Ask the students what they think the title of the story is. Write their title suggestions on the board. Hand out copies of “page 2” to the students Reactions/comments on the actual title © Get students to take turns reading the paragraphs of the story, perhaps go through the reading 2-3 times so everyone has ample opportunity to read. Ask the students if there is anything they didn’t understand about the story. Write unknown vocabulary and definitions on the board. * Hand out copies of “page 3” to the students (double sided) Give the students time to complete the written exercises. When everyone is finished, take up the answers by soliciting them from the students and write answers on the board (answer key attached). Check #4 individually for spelling/ grammar. ¢ For the “Class Discussion” — follow instructions on the attached sheet. If they didn’t understand, get the “reading” student to repeat their answer. Ask the seated students what they think of how the money was spent. Do they agree or disagree? Why? 2. Brainstorm a list of other ways to spend $500,000 not already mentioned and write the ideas on the board. 3. Write on the board: Pretend there is a lottery ticket at the garbage dump in your city.
