Developing reading skills

♣ Learn how to work out the main idea and why it is important.
♣ There are many ideas in a text but one idea is the link that joins the other ideas
together – this is the main idea.
♣ Read the text then ask yourself, “What is it mainly about?” (The title is a useful clue
to the main idea because a good title often tells the reader what the text is about.)
♣ If you are reading and you find a word you do not know, do not immediately use a
dictionary. Ask yourself: “Is this an important, useful word?”, “Do I need to know
the exact meaning?”
If the word seems important, and you have time, then of course use a dictionary and
add the word to your vocabulary notebook. If the word seems unimportant, or you
are reading just for pleasure, or you do not have time, then you can:
▪ Leave it and come back later
▪ Try to guess the meaning or the word from the context
▪ Compare the new word with other words that look similar, then guess
▪ Compare it with the Spanish language. Be careful because there are “False
Friends” in English.
♣ When you start doing the exercise, always check the instructions and all the possible
answers before choosing one.

acuerdo? ¿Con qué parte no estás tan de acuerdo?

2. Releer el tercer párrafo del texto. Planificar y actuar un juego de roles sobre esta niña, sus
compañeros y su docente.
