What is the role of folk media in society?


Folk media can integrate cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes with national and societal needs.
Indigenous media are locally oriented, easily accessible, and relatively inexpensive. Folk media
include visual, verbal, and aural forms accepted by a specific community and used to entertain,
inform, or instruct.

What exactly is folk media?


Folk media refers to traditional forms of communication and artistic expression that have
developed within a particular culture or community. This includes various forms of oral
communication, such as folktales, legends, songs, and proverbs, as well as visual and
performance art, such as folk dances, puppetry, and street theater.
Folk media is often closely tied to local customs and traditions, and serves as a means of
preserving cultural identity and transmitting values and knowledge from one generation to the
next. It can also be used to address social and political issues, as well as to entertain and bring
people together.
Examples of folk media from around the world include the storytelling traditions of African
griots, the puppetry of Southeast Asia, the folk dances of Europe and South America, and the
folk songs of the Appalachian region of the United States.

The oldest folk media


Puppetry is a dramatic depiction with the help of creatures called puppets. At present, it is
gaining importance as a means of educational communication. It is one of the oldest types of folk
medium in India.

Folk MEdia media have been in existence in India for long and have been used as a medium of
communication in rural areas. Over the years, rural masses have been using the folk media for
expressing their social , ritual, moral and emotional needs.
