identical with ISO 3166-1:2006, incorporating corrigendum July 2007. It
supersedes BS EN ISO 3166-1:1998 which is withdrawn.
The start and finish of text introduced or altered by corrigendum is indicated
in the text by tags. Text altered by ISO corrigendum July 2007 is indicated in

The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical Committee

This document (EN ISO 3166-1:2006) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 46
"Information and documentation" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/SS F17
"Administrative documents", the secretariat of which is held by CMC.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of
an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by May 2007, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by May 2007.
This document supersedes EN ISO 3166-1:1997.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of

the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium,

Introduction
ISO 3166 provides universally applicable coded representations of names of countries (current and non-
current), dependencies, and other areas of particular geopolitical interest and their subdivisions.
This part of ISO 3166 establishes codes that represent the current names of countries, dependencies, and
other areas of particular geopolitical interest, on the basis of lists of country names obtained from the United
Nations.
ISO 3166-2 establishes a code that represents the names of the principal administrative divisions, or similar
areas, of the countries etc. included in this part of ISO 3166.
ISO 3166-3 establishes a code that represents non-current country names, i.e. the country names deleted
from ISO 3166 since its first publication in 1974.
The three parts of ISO 3166 do not express any opinion whatsoever concerning the legal status of any
country, dependency, or other area named herein, or concerning its frontiers or boundaries.
NOTE 1 ISO 3166-2 was first published in 1998 and ISO 3166-3 was first published in 1999.
NOTE 2 ISO 3166-2 and ISO 3166-3 are not included in the same document as ISO 3166-1. They are separate parts
of ISO 3166.

Introduction
La présente Norme internationale fournit une représentation codée des noms de pays (actuels ou non
actuels), dépendances et autres zones d'intérêt géopolitique particulier et de leurs subdivisions, pour une
application universelle.
La présente partie de l'ISO 3166 établit des codes qui représentent les noms de pays actuels, des
dépendances et autres zones d'intérêt géopolitique particulier, basés sur des listes de noms de pays
provenant des Nations Unies.
L'ISO 3166-2 établit un code qui représente les noms des divisions administratives ou des zones similaires
des pays etc. issus de la présente partie de l'ISO 3166.
L'ISO 3166-3 établit un code pour les noms de pays attestés dans le passé, c'est-à-dire des pays dont les
noms ont été supprimés de l'ISO 3166 depuis sa première publication en 1974.
