Research Proposal

Title: Practices and Challenges of Teachers’ Skills and Knowledge in Innovative Teaching
and Learning in Selected Secondary Schools of Gurage Zone, Central Regional State of
Ethiopia

1. Introduction: Innovative teaching and learning practices are crucial for preparing
students for success in the 21st century. However, the effective implementation of
these practices depends on teachers' skills and knowledge. This research proposal
aims to explore the current practices and challenges faced by teachers in Gurage
Zone, Central Regional State of Ethiopia, regarding their skills and knowledge in
innovative teaching and learning in secondary schools.
2. Objectives:

 To examine the current practices of teachers in implementing innovative


teaching and learning activities.
 To identify the challenges and barriers faced by teachers in enhancing their skills
and knowledge in innovative teaching practices.
 To explore the factors influencing the adoption of innovative teaching practices
by teachers.
 To suggest recommendations for improving teachers' skills and knowledge in
innovative teaching and learning activities.
3. Research Questions:

 What are the current practices of teachers in implementing innovative teaching


and learning activities in selected secondary schools of Gurage Zone?
 What are the main challenges and barriers faced by teachers in enhancing their
skills and knowledge in innovative teaching practices?
 What factors influence the adoption of innovative teaching practices by teachers
in Gurage Zone?
 What recommendations can be made to improve teachers' skills and knowledge
in innovative teaching and learning activities?
4. Methodology:

 Research Design: This study will utilize a qualitative research design, including
interviews and focus group discussions.
 Sample Selection: The research will be conducted in a purposive sample of
secondary schools in Gurage Zone, Central Regional State of Ethiopia.
 Data Collection: Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with
teachers and focus group discussions with school administrators.
 Data Analysis: Thematic analysis will be used to identify key themes and patterns
in the data collected.
5. Significance of the Study: This research is significant as it will provide valuable
insights into the current practices and challenges faced by teachers in Gurage Zone
regarding their skills and knowledge in innovative teaching and learning. The
findings of the study can inform policy decisions, professional development
programs, and teacher training initiatives aimed at improving the quality of
education in the region.

 Data collection: 2 months


 Data analysis: 1 month
 Report writing: 1 month
7. Budget: The budget for this research proposal will include expenses for data
collection, analysis, report writing, and any costs associated with dissemination of
findings.
In conclusion, this research proposal seeks to investigate the practices and challenges
of teachers' skills and knowledge in innovative teaching and learning in selected
secondary schools of Gurage Zone, Central Regional State of Ethiopia. By
understanding the current landscape, we aim to develop strategies to support teachers
in enhancing their skills and implementing effective innovative teaching practices for
the benefit of students in the region.
