B. Establishing a purpose for Today our next lesson is Open and Closed Circuit
the lesson
In this lesson you should be able to differentiate
between open and closed circuits and demonstrate
their understanding through practical examples and
diagrams.

C. Presenting example/
Instances of the new lesson
1. How many appliances and gadgets do you have? List
them.

https://bestxpovs.xyz/product_details/110226642.html

2. How does electricity flow to our appliances and

gadgets?
Two conditions must be met in order for electricity to
flow: first, there must be a source of electricity, second,
there must be a complete path for the electricity to
flow through

D. Discussing new concepts Continuity of an Electric Circuit

and practicing new skill #1
1. Closed Circuit (Switch On)

A closed circuit makes the bulb light up because the

path of electricity is complete. Electric current flows
through the connecting wires from the power source to
the device (ex. bulb) then back to the source again.

Characteristic of a closed circuit:

- Allows electric current to flow continuously.

- Powers devices because the circuit is complete.

- Components are connected without breaks.

- Switches are closed to allow current flow.

- Devices in a closed circuit are functional.

Understanding these points helps distinguish closed

circuits from open circuits and shows their importance
in powering electrical devices.

2. Open Circuit (Switch Off)

Electricity does not flow in this kind of circuit because

there is a gap or no complete path from one end of the
circuit to the other end. If it is an open circuit, an
electrical device does not work. In the case of Figure 3
below, the bulb does not light up.

Characteristics of an open circuit:

- No continuous path for electric current.

- Devices cannot be powered.

- Circuit has gaps or breaks.

- Switches are open, blocking current flow.

- Connected devices do not function.

Understanding these traits helps identify open circuits

and their inability to power devices due to
interruptions in the current flow.
In summary, to turn on the lights, you must close the
circuit by turning on the switch to connect the wires
and other parts of the circuit. On the other hand, to
turn off the lights, you must open the circuit by turning
off the switch to disconnect them.

Besides switches, other causes of gaps or breaks in a

circuit include drained, usty, or wrong positions of
batteries wherein similar terminals are connected,
defective devices, and busted bulbs.

E. Discussing new concepts and COMPARING OPEN AND CLOSED CIRCUIT

practicing new skill #2
The key differences between open and closed circuits
are:

1.Flow of Electric Current:

- Open Circuit: Does not allow continuous flow of

electric current due to breaks or interruptions.

- Closed Circuit: Permits uninterrupted flow of electric

current along a complete pathway.

2.Powering Devices:

- Open Circuit: Inability to power devices connected

to the circuit.

- Closed Circuit: Capable of powering devices as the

circuit is complete.

3. Switch Position:

- Open Circuit: Switches are in the "off" position,

disrupting the flow of current.

- Closed Circuit: Switches are closed or in the "on"

position, allowing current to flow.

4.Circuit Completeness:

- Open Circuit: Contains gaps or breaks, preventing a

complete loop for current.

- Closed Circuit: Components are connected without

breaks, forming a continuous loop.

5.Functionality of Devices:

- Open Circuit: Devices connected do not function

due to lack of power.

- Closed Circuit: Devices within the circuit operate as

the current flows through them.

Understanding these distinctions helps in recognizing

and comprehending the behavior and implications of
open and closed circuits in electrical systems.

F. Developing Mastery Activity 1. "Describe Me!"

Group activity

What to do:

1. Construct a simple electric circuit.

2. Connect the materials as shown in the diagram

below. Observe what happens.

3. This time, remove the switch connection. Again,

observe what happens.

Directions: Based on your observations, answer the

following questions in your Science notebook.

1. What happened to the bulb after you The bulb lights up because
connected the switch to the wires? Why? electricity flows through it,
heating up the filament and
causing it to emit light through a
process called incandescence.

2. How did you know that electricity flow in the You know electricity flows in a
circuit? circuit when you observe signs
like a bulb lighting up, a speaker
emitting sound, or an ammeter
showing deflection.

3. What happened to the bulb after you disconnected The bulb turns off when the
the switch to the wires? Why? switch is disconnected because
the electric circuit is interrupted,
stopping the flow of current
needed for the bulb to emit
light.

G. Finding Practical Application Open and closed circuits are used in various devices:
of concepts and skills in daily
living 1. **Lighting**: Closed circuits illuminate bulbs, while
open circuits turn off lights.

2. **Appliances**: Closed circuits power devices like

TVs, while open circuits occur when they're turned off.

3. **Electronics**: Closed circuits make devices like

smartphones work, while open circuits can cause
device failure.

4. **Cars**: Closed circuits enable vehicle systems to

function, while open circuits can cause malfunctions.

5. **Security**: Closed circuits operate security

systems, while open circuits may trigger alarms.

6. **Heating/Cooling**: Closed circuits maintain

temperatures, while open circuits can lead to system
failure.

Knowing these applications helps us troubleshoot

electrical issues and ensure devices function correctly.

H. Making Generalization and Again what is close circuit? A closed circuit makes the bulb
abstractions about the lesson light up because the path of
electricity is complete. Electric
current flows through the
connecting wires from the
power source to the device (ex.
bulb) then back to the source

again.

kind of circuit because there is a
gap or no complete path from
one end of the circuit to the
other end. If it is an open circuit,

an electrical device does not
work, the bulb does not light up.
