Objectives: Learners should be able to;
 Explain the meaning of communication
 Explain the factors leading to confidence or lack of
 Demonstrate how confidence affects communication
 Suggest how to build confidence in communication skills
BACKGROUND

Good communication skills are essential in all life contexts. However, there has been a rapid
deterioration in the quality of communication by learners. A deficiency of confidence has been
observed and learners are required to investigate the causes behind this. Your research is going to be
experimental.

THE ACTIVITY
1. Experimental research

a) Select at random 10 different learners (have a balanced representation).

b) Ask them to answer 10 general knowledge questions before an audience of your choice i.e prepare simple and
thought provoking questions.

c) Observe the following indicators of confident speaking and rate them out of 10

i. Clear voice tone

ii. Eye contact

iii. Effective gestures

iv. Appropriate facial expressions (a match between the message and shown face)

v. Composure

vi. Effective language use

d. Insert the research questions (5)

2. a) Present your findings on the above experimental exercise. Indicate how high and low confidence speakers
performed on each indicator. (15)

b. Conclude with a write up on the importance of communicating with confidence. (10)

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

 Marks will be awarded for logical and simple research questions.


 Marks will be awarded for a clear illustration on how confident speakers fare on the confidence indicators.
 Top band students should be able to illustrate how the difficulty of questions affect the speaker’s confidence
levels.
 Your write up should bring out the importance of confidence, and how it affects both the speaker and
listeners.
