In this era when digital literacy is greatly important, it is also important for us to know
how to operate a desktop computer. Knowing how to turn on, off and restart a desktop
computer is essential for several reasons. Shutting down your computer regularly can help
resolve system issues and enhance its performance. It can help preserve the lifespan of your
device by preventing overheating and reducing the strain on its components. It can help
reduce energy consumption and save electricity bills. It can help your privacy by preventing
hacks and securing crucial data. Finally, it can help guard your device against power surges
that may damage your computer and any unsaved data. This module will tell you all the
simple steps to turn on, turn off and restart a desktop computer.
In this module, you will be able to:
♦ identify and demonstrate the steps in turning on, turning off and restarting a desktop
computer;
♦ and value the importance of handling the desktop computer with care.

STEPS IN TURNING ON A DESKTOP COMPUTER


1. Check if your computer is connected to the power.
 Make sure the power cable shown in the
image is plugged in.

2. Check to see if your keyboard and mouse are


connected.
 Follow the cables from the keyboard and
mouse to see if they are connected.
 If you have PS2 connectors the keyboard plug
is purple and the green one is for the mouse.
3. Check if your monitor is connected properly.
 Connect the cable from the monitor if they are
not connected.

4. Check if your monitor is connected and powered


up.
 After you have the correct power display lead
plugged into the computer, check to see if
your monitor(screen) has electricity hooked
up to it.
5. Turning the PC on by pressing the power button.
 You are now ready to start it up. There will be
a power button somewhere on the front panel.

Turning off your computer is very simple yet there are many ways to turn off your device.
Here’s how to turn off your computer.

STEPS IN TURNING OFF A DESKTOP COMPUTER


1. Click on the start button.
 It is in the bottom left hand
corner, unless you moved your
task bar. Even then, your start
button is located in the bottom
left corner ad it is just hidden.

2. Click on the power button.


 This is where you will find a
bunch of power options.
Including to shut down, restart
and sleep.

3. Click the appropriate option which is


turn off.

4. Confirm that you want to shut down or


restart the computer if other users are
logged in. This can be done by clicking
on Shutdown /Restart anyway or Yes.

5. Force a shutdown or restart if the


programs are not responding.

Note: To force shutdown your computer hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. The
screen may blink but continue holding it down. Save your work. Shutting down or restarting
your computer may cause you or other users to lose any work.
For a more efficient work from your computer, it needs to be restarted for these reasons:
 Slowness of RAM problems
 Application errors or memory leaks
 Internet connectivity
 Performance issues
 Updates

STEPS IN RESTARTING A DESKTOP COMPUTER


1. Click on the start button.
 It is in the bottom left hand
corner, unless you moved
your task bar. Even then,
