Topic: Introduction to Narrative Writing

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the elements of a
narrative and write a short narrative using appropriate structure and language.

Materials:

1. Whiteboard and markers

2. Copies of a short story or narrative excerpt
3. Pen and paper for each student

4A's Lesson Plan:

1. Aim:

 To introduce students to the elements of narrative writing and encourage them

to write their own narratives.

2. Approach:

 The lesson will be interactive, incorporating group discussions, individual writing

tasks, and peer review.

3. Activities:

a. Anticipatory Set (Activity 1): (10 minutes)

 Start with a short story or narrative excerpt. Ask students to read it silently.
 After reading, engage students in a brief discussion:
 What is a narrative?
 What elements do you think are important in a narrative?
 Why do authors use narratives in their writing?

b. Activity (Activity 2): (20 minutes)

 Introduce the key elements of a narrative: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and
resolution. Write these on the board.
 Discuss each element in detail, giving examples from the story read earlier.
 Break the students into small groups and give each group a different narrative
excerpt.
 Ask each group to identify and discuss the elements of narrative present in their
excerpt.
 Reconvene as a class and have each group share their findings.

c. Analysis (Activity 3): (15 minutes)

 Provide a template on the board or hand out a worksheet with a narrative

structure diagram.
 Guide students in filling out the template or diagram with the elements of their
own narratives.
 Encourage students to think of their own story ideas or use prompts provided by
the teacher.

d. Application (Activity 4): (15 minutes)

 Have students individually write a short narrative based on the structure they've
discussed.
 Emphasize the importance of using descriptive language, dialogue, and sensory
details.
 After writing, pair students up for peer review. Each student should provide
constructive feedback on their partner's narrative.

4. Assessment:

 Assess students' understanding based on their participation in discussions,

completion of the narrative structure template, and the quality of their written
narratives.
 Use a rubric to evaluate their narratives, focusing on elements such as plot
development, characterization, and language use.

5. Closure:

 Recap the key elements of narrative writing.

 Encourage students to continue practicing narrative writing and exploring
different storytelling techniques.
6. Homework:

 Assign students to revise their narratives based on peer feedback and submit the
final draft in the next class.

This lesson plan aims to provide students with a solid foundation in narrative writing
while encouraging creativity and critical thinking.
