Communication 1 How well do you know each other?

Aim: to practise present simple questions and sentences and adverbs of frequency

When to use: after Exercise 12 in Lesson 3B

Procedure: Put students in pairs. Give one worksheet to each student. Students read the sentences and guess whether
they think the sentences are true or false about their partner. Students then work together to check their answers by
asking Do you … ? questions (e.g. Do you love weekends? Do you work at the weekend?). Ask students to give
themselves a score out of 15. Compare scores in the class. Which student knew the most about their partner?

Communication 2 How healthy are you?

Aim: to practise present simple questions

When to use: after Exercise 9 in Lesson 3C

Procedure: Give one worksheet to each student. Students should complete the ME column with information about
themselves (e.g. Q: Do you go to the gym? A: Yes. Once a week.). Once they have completed their column, ask students
to ask three classmates about their routines (e.g. Do you go to the gym?). For an extra challenge, ask students to cover
the left column and try to remember the questions based on the pictures and their own written answers. Ask students to
note down the answers the other students give. When they have finished, ask them to share with the class anything
interesting they learned about their classmates.

When to use: after Exercise 10 in Lesson 3C

Procedure: Put students in groups of three to six. Cut out the cards and give a deck to each group. Tell students they
are going to play a card game in which the aim is to collect pairs of identical word cards. First, ask one student in each
group to deal five cards to each player. Place all remaining cards face down in the middle of the table. When the dealing

is complete, students should look through their cards to find any that are the same. If they have two cards that are the
same, they should place these face down on the table in front of them. Next, play begins with the student on the dealer’s
left. The player must ask any other student a question to find out if they have a card that they need to complete a pair.
(For example, a player who has the word card ‘tip’ might ask ‘Akiko, do you have ‘tip’?’). If the student does have the
requested card, they should answer ‘Yes, I do’, and must pass the card to the player who asked for it. If they do not have
the requested card, they should answer ‘No, I don’t’, and the player who requested the card must pick up a card from the
pack in the centre of the table instead. (If there are no cards remaining in the centre of the table, play continues without
any cards being picked up.) To end their turn, the player places any new pairs in their hand face down on the table. Play
moves to the next player in a clockwise direction, who repeats the same steps. The game ends when all cards are face
down in front of the players. The winner is the student who has collected the most pairs.

Mediation An average student’s day

Aim: to interpret, summarize and relay visual information about daily habits

When to use: after Exercise 1 in Lesson 3C

a pie chart that represents their own typical weekday. When students have finished, put them in pairs and ask them to
take turns to describe their typical weekday using their pie chart as reference. Encourage students to take notes as they
listen, and then, finally, ask them to create another pie chart to represent their partner’s typical weekday.
