My best friend since middle school, Semih, lost his eyesight as a result of a car accident in

the 7th grade. Going out, playing games, and eating all became activities that were
impossible for him to do without depending on a human. As I did my best to help and be with
him, I assisted with his basic needs and played games together to lift his spirits. His favorite
was the one he came up with, "What Do You See." He would ask me what I see, and I would
describe it to him as detailed and vividly as possible, and he would picture it.

After improving myself in the field of machine learning, I participated in my first competition.
Even though the topic was natural language processing, I wanted to turn it into a valuable
project for my friend. So, I decided to work on an AI that describes the environment in
colorful details to visually impaired people so that they could grasp their environment and
accomplish fundamental tasks without relying on others. Thus, the project "What Do You
See" was born. My project got 2nd place in the competition but Semih's happiness was the
thing I was proud of the most.

Semih's happiness made me realize the pleasure of helping people and being a beacon of
hope for them. This feeling propelled me to expand my endeavors, leading me to develop an
AI solution for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Motivated by the critical importance of
accurate diagnoses, I dedicated my post-school hours to fine-tuning and perfecting the
system. The experience of creating a tool that could save lives strengthened my resolve to
make a positive impact in the world.

At Amherst College, surrounded by like-minded peers aspiring to help others with their skills,
we will create groundbreaking, innovative, and impactful projects. I aspire to contribute my
perspective of helping people, furthering the pursuit of innovative solutions to real-world
challenges.

While I harness my curiosity with classes in Amherst, I will always ask this question:

How can I apply my skills to improve the lives of others?
