1889 - INCEPTION OF ADVOCACY

1890 - LITERARY RESONANCE

The serialized version of "Noli Me Tangere" reverberates
throughout La Solidaridad, enhancing Rizal's denunciation of

José Rizal (1861-1896) was a prominent Filipino nationalist, intellectual, and polymath, whose
writings and activism played a pivotal role in the Philippines' quest for independence from
Spanish colonial rule

DECEMBER 30, 1896

José Rizal was arrested following the
discovery of the Katipunan, a
revolutionary society advocating for
Philippine independence from Spanish
rule. Although Rizal had limited
involvement in the revolutionary
activities, he was implicated and taken
into custody.

FORT SANTIAGO
After his arrest, Rizal was taken to
Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila.
This military citadel served as the
initial place of his imprisonment while
the trial proceedings took place. Rizal
underwent a quick trial and was found
guilty of rebellion, sedition, and
conspiracy by a Spanish military court.
The verdict led to his condemnation to
death by firing squad.

LUNETA
DECEMBER 30
On this day, Rizal was led to
Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park, for his
execution. At 7:03 AM, he faced the
firing squad. Rizal, displaying courage
and acceptance of his fate, requested
to face his executioners.

Before his execution, Rizal penned his
final poem, "Mi Ultimo Adiós" (My Last
Farewell), expressing his love for his
country and reflecting on the
injustices he witnessed.

BURIAL
PACO CEMETERY

Following his execution, Rizal's body was

interred in an unmarked grave at Paco
Cemetery in Manila to prevent it from
becoming a focal point for supporters.
Later, his remains were exhumed,
identified, and reinterred in a monument at
Rizal Park, also known as Luneta Park,
symbolizing Philippine independence and
the sacrifices made by national heroes.
