Planks constant using LED

Aim- To determine the Planks constant using LED.

Apparatus- Breadboard, LED, connecting wires, Regulated power supply, DC voltmeter,
DC ammeter
Theory- It is a physical constant that is the quantum of electromagnetic action. It relates
the energy carried by a photon to its frequency by, E = hν. Where, E = energy, ν = frequency
and h = Planck's constant.
Circuit Diagram-

Formulae-
1) E = eV0
2) h = Eλ/c
Procedure-
1) Make connections as shown in the figure.
2) Change the battery voltage up to just LED start glowing.
3) Record the voltage (V0 = knee voltage of LED) in the voltmeter.
4) Repeat procedure 2 and 3 for different coloured LEDs.
5) Tabulate observations and calculate the Planks constant.
Observations-
1) Wavelength for Red colour (λR) = 660 nm
2) Wavelength for Yellow colour (λY) = 570 nm
3) Wavelength for Green colour (λG) = 525 nm
4) Speed of light = c = 3 × 108 m/s
5) Charge on electron = e = 1.6 × 10-19 C
Observation Table-
Sr. LED λ (nm) V0 (volt) E = eV0 h = Eλ/c
No.
1 Red 660
2 Yellow 570
3 Green 525
Mean (h) =

Result- Planks constant using LED is --------------- joule-sec.
