2021 MENG 1001 In-Course Exam No 1 of 3

1. l kg of a particular fluid expands reversibly according to a linear relationship from 4.2 bar to 1.4 bar;
the initial and final volumes are 0.004 m3 and 0.02 m3 respectively. The fluid is then cooled reversibly
at constant pressure and finally compressed reversibly according to the relationship pv = constant back
to the initial conditions of 4.2 bar and 0.004 m3. Sketch the cycle on a p-v diagram and calculate the
net work of the cycle.
[10 Marks]

2. A mass of gas at an initial pressure of 28 bar and with an internal energy of 1500 kJ is contained in a
perfectly insulated cylinder of volume 0.06 m3. The gas is allowed to expand reversibly in a cylinder
behind a piston according to the relationship pv2 = constant until its internal energy is 1400 kJ.
Calculate the following:
(i) Work done
(ii) Final volume
(iii) Final pressure
[5 Marks]

3. Dry saturated steam at a pressure of 3.6 bar is contained in a rigid vessel with a volume of 0.8 m3. The
vessel is cooled until the pressure is 2 bar. Calculate the following:
(i) Mass of steam
(ii) The quality of the steam at the final state
(iii) The Heat Transfer during the cooling process
[8 Marks]

4. Combustion gases at a mass flow rate of 4.5 kg/s is suppled to a turbine. The gases enter the turbine at
a velocity of 90 m/s and a specific volume of 0.85 m3/kg and exits from a duct with a cross sectional
area of 0.038 m2 at the exhaust of the turbine with a specific volume of 1.45 m3/kg.
The specific enthalpy of the combustion gases is reduced by 200 kJ/kg between the turbine inlet and
outlet. In addition, there is a heat loss of 40 kJ/kg from the turbine to the surroundings.

Calculate the following:

(i) Cross sectional area of the inlet duct to the turbine
(ii) The velocity of the combustion gases at the exit of the turbine
(iii) The power developed
