World Heritage for
Sustainable Development
• UNESCO focuses on the role of WH for community development.

• WH has high potential to drive community development


especially around sustainable tourism.

• Sustainable/natural products/creative industries can bring benefits


to communities at WHS.

• There is a need to balance sustainable development with


heritage significances.
SDG Targets

4.7. Ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable
development, including through education for human rights, gender equality, global citizenship and
appreciation of cultural diversity.

5.5. Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all
levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.

16.10. Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with
national legislation and international agreements.

8.3. Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job
creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth
of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services

UNESCO's capacity building initiatives involve
knowledge-sharing, technical assistance, training
programs, policy advice, and the establishment of
networks and platforms for collaboration. By building
the capacities of individuals, communities, and
institutions, UNESCO aims to safeguard cultural
heritage, foster creativity and innovation, and promote
inclusive and sustainable cultural development

The community development program of UNESCO
Jakarta was initiated in Borobudur & Prambanan in 2013
by providing technical assistance to the communities
living surround both UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites
