Abstract The GCO Publication No. 1/90 - Review of Design Methods for Excavations was published in
1990 by the then Geotechnical Control Office (GCO). Although the review was written primarily as a
reference document, upon publication it immediately became the de facto standard of good practice for the
design of Excavation and Lateral Support (ELS) works in Hong Kong. Since then, practitioners have
accumulated much experience in the design and construction of deep excavations in Hong Kong. There
have also been many advances in design methods and modelling techniques, as well as an increasing trend
in international practice of using the partial factor method for limit state design. On the other hand, the
construction industry has introduced modern equipment and invested heavily in digital construction in recent
years. In view of these developments, the GEO saw the need to revise Publication No. 1/90 to consolidate
the experience gained and the improvements made in the practice of ELS works.

In this seminar, the speaker will share the updates on this publication with an aim to achieve significant gains
for the economic design of ELS works, as well as savings in construction time. New key aspects of the
design and construction considerations of ELS works will be presented, including enhancement in limit state
design, determination of groundwater level for design, ground deformation control mechanism and novel
construction technologies, etc.

Ir Dr Raymond Koo obtained his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of
Science and Technology. He is a chartered geotechnical engineer and has been working for the Consultants
and the Government of HKSAR over 20 years. He has a variety of working experience in geotechnical
engineering projects. He is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, Civil
Engineering and Development Department and working group member of the revision of GCO Publication
No. 1/90 for Deep Excavation Design and Construction.
