INTRODUCTION

Round and jet diffusers are always considered as a heavy

duty air distribution devices having a wide rang of

www.dasco.com.kw
applications in heating, air conditioning and ventilation
systems. At a perfect setting, round diffusers provide an
unusually uniform horizontal airflow patterns, while jet
diffusers provide an efficient spot projection for air
direction and orientation.
With uniformly assembled concentric rings, this does
not only produce optimum performance, but also assure
uniformity of appearance when different sizes are used in
the same area.
Dasco round and jet diffusers are always suitable for
most of the HVAC applications, but they are especially
well suited to factories, warehouses, convention halls,
coliseums, shopping malls and other applications where
ceilings are high and conditions are variable.

Introduction
ROUND DIFFUSERS

GENERAL
Dasco Round Diffusers DD-7 are designed to
deliver air in a reasonably uniform and horizontal
pattern. The design consists of a conical core
followed by continuously concentric rings to
adjust the air flow pattern. This design feature
will assure little turbulence in the air stream
and allow for the distribution of the smudge
pattern. It also provides excellent air distribution
efficiency.
On projects where the DD-7 diffusers are
used, the three stepped down cones on all sizes
result in a uniform appearance all over the Round Diffuser DD-7
project. Moreover, this configuration results (Standard Model)
in a lower jet velocity and hence less pressure
loss. Simple dismantling of the inner cones
allows for a very practical way of installation
and damper adjustment.

MATERIAL & FINISH

Complete aluminium construction. Diffusers are available in white polyester powder coating
finish or any other RAL standard colour upon customer request.

Dampers of butterfly shapes are adjustable from the front by a lever and are made from
aluminium sheets.

throw in feet.)
Minimum Throw : Is the distance between the center of the diffuser and the point at
which the terminal velocity is 200 FPM (Corresponding to a residual
velocity of 75 FPM).
Maximum Throw : Is the distance between the center of the diffuser and the point at which
the terminal velocity is 100 FPM (Corresponding to a residual velocity
of 35 FPM). ( An average value of throw can be taken for general app-
plications such as restaurants, offices, apartments etc. and results in a
residual velocity of 55 FPM).
CFM : Is the air flow rate in cubic feet per minute
Neck Velocity : Is the air stream velocity measured in feet per minute ( FPM).
Total Pressure : Is the sum of static pressured and velocity pressure given in inches
W.G.
NC Level (dB) : Is the noise criteria based on 10 dB room attenuation and measured at
10 Ft away from diffuser face ( Deduct 3 dB for 20 Ft distance and 7 dB
for 30 Ft distance)

NOISE CRITERIA

• The sound caused by an air outlet is directly proportional to the velocity of the air passing through it
( see table 4).

• Noise criteria: The sound pressure level of 8 octave bands acceptable to Human ears and are estimated
from table 1.

• The room effect is the difference between the sound power level of a terminal and the sound pressure
level sensed by human ears in the room , and is affected by room size, sound absorption characteristic
of the room surfaces, ceiling height, space volume, distance of listener to terminal, terminal location
and number of terminals.

Ambient sounds:
a) ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND – Existing within the space with airconditioning off .
b) EXTERNAL SOUND – Entering a space from outdoors.
c) INTRUDING SOUND – Entering from adjacent spaces.
Prior to selection of NC level from table 1, the three ambient sounds above must be considered.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

In general the selection of a diffuser starts from a given quantity of air to be handled by the
diffuser. Limitations and restrictions on sound level and pressure drop are other factors that one
has to consider.

1) Knowing the ceiling height, table 2, will read the maximum permissible CFM that could

www.dasco.com.kw
be handled by the diffuser and hence the total CFM can be divided over the most reasonable
number of diffusers which would best fit the application.
Remember that a round diffuser has a uniform pattern and it is always best to center it in
a square area.
Total CFM
No. of Diffusers =
Max. Permissible CFM

2) Determine from table 4 the maximum allowable neck velocity which keeps the application
as silent as required . Recommended Sound Levels could be read from table 1.

Remember That :
CFM = Ak x Average velocity .

3) Refer to the selection table ( Basic performance Data ) to determine the size of the diffuser
which best fit your application. The table also reads area factor Ak, velocity pressure, total
pressure, and throw.

AIR BALANCING ADJUSTMENT

To determine the CFM, follow up the following procedure:

1) Use measuring tools for air velocity like ALNOR 2220-A or Anemotherm air meter.
2) Take number of measuring points (should be not less than 5 in the outer ring as illustrated
in the diagram).
3) The jet velocity then is the arithmetic average of the velocity readings taken .

(V1+V2+…. +Vk)
V (average) =
K

4) Determine the area factor Ak from the basic performance data table considering the
proper size.
5) Calculate CFM :
CFM = Ak x Vk

8”,10”,12”14”, 16” and 18”(neck diameter) to
offer wide range of selection with lower sound
The objective in plant air conditioning is to
level and higher flow capacity. Each assembly
provide satisfactory comfort for worker with
of DJH-10 available with 1 through 4 diffuser
minimum installed cooling tonnage. Therefore,
elements (specify No. of elements).
today HVAC engineers prefer spot or localized
cooling rather than cooling
of entire factory by which
efficiency can be improved
and reduce operating costs.

The prime consideration is

to cool the workers, not the
plant.

PERFORMANCE NOTES :
The following performance notes should be taken into consideration before starting jet diffuser
selection using the general basic performance data table.
1. Data in the basic performance table are for applications based on 20˚F temperature difference
between supply air and average room temperature.
2. Throw values (measured in feet ) are the distance between the face of the diffuser and the
position with 50 FPM mean velocity of the jet stream.
3. NC ratings are measured at 10 Ft away from diffuser face in a room with 10 dB sound
attenuation . Deduct 3 dB for 20 Ft and 7 dB for 30 Ft.
4. For an assembly of multi-jet diffusers, consider the following :
• The individual elements flow can be adjusted to any desired spread pattern where the throw
will be reduced the single unit value.

• When multi-jet elements are adjusted to full 30˚ pattern, then:

a) Pressure drop will increase by 40 %.
b) Sound level NC will increase by 6 dB.

EXHAUST VALVES

GENERAL

The EFF is exhaust valves (Disc valve) for

installation on ceiling or wall. It can also
be used for supply air. The valve has a locka-
able central cone which is rotated to adjust
the pressure and consequently the air volume.
EFF is widely used in all types of air treatm-
ment installations, mainly wash rooms and
bath rooms. The round shape of these termin-
nal units allows them to be used in many other
variety of applications. They combine both att-
tractive appearance and accurate control over
exhaust air volumes.

Exhaust Valve (EFF)

DESIGN
The EFF exhaust valve is manufactured from sheet with a white powder-coated finish (RAL 9010)
and is available in the following diameters: ø80, ø100, ø125, ø160, and ø200.

MOUNTING
The largest size, ø200, should be mounted with a frame RFU. All other sizes can be installed directly
into the duct.

ADJUSTMENT
The adjustment pressure can be changed by turning the central disc. The air flow can be calculated
using K - factors.
