TOP DRIVE DRILLING SYSTEM

The Top Drive Drilling System is compatible with


most existing drilling rigs. When using the Top Drive
Drilling System, the traditional kelly bushing and
kelly are not required because the drill string is
rotated directly by an electric drive system suspended
from the traveling block. The system provides up to
27,600 ft-lbs of drilling torque, up to 36,700 ft-lbs of
torque for connections and uses a pair of rails to pro-
vide torque reaction control. A drilling sub, contain-
ing a remote-operated inside BOP, is driven by a
standard oilfield DC motor of the type most common-
ly found on conventional electric rotary drives.
A major feature of the Top Drive Drilling System is
the Pipehandler. Based upon proven Varco torque
wrench technology, this hydraulic tool breaks out the
drilling shaft from the string at any point in the
derrick.
The system uses standard links and a conventional
elevator to hoist and lower the string when tripping
or to handle stands when making connections. A
pneumatic link tilt extends the elevator to the
mousehole for easy latching. This feature may also be
used to push stands of drill pipe and collars to the
derrickman to simplify racking.
Virtually all components of the Top Drive Drilling
System are standard oilfield items; it is their integra-
tion into a system that is revolutionary.

The PHM-1 combines Varco's AR-3000 Iron Rough-


neck components with a pipe stacker crane mounted
between the rig floor and the monkey board. The unit
can make or break tool joints from 4 to 9-1/2 inches in
diameter any height up to 20 feet from floor level, us-
ing the Varco Gateless Torque Wrench, TW-100. This SPINNING
WRENCH
vertical height capability is especially useful when us-
ing Varco's Top Drive Drilling System on floaters.
The Varco Spinning Wrench, SSW-50, located above
the operator cab, can spin all sizes of pipe from 3-1/2
inch drill pipe to 9-1/2 inch drill collars. For running
casing, the spinner is replaced with a remotely con-
trolled casing tong, and the PHM-1 can be used to
stab and spin casing joints up to 13-3/8 inches in TORQUE
diameter. Located above the spinner are two exten- WRENCH
ding arms that are mechanically interconnected to
move toward or away from the machine with stands
of drill pipe or drill collars. The lower arm's jaw is
designed to grip 3-1/2 to 9-1/2 inch drill pipe or drill
collars and lift stands weighing up to 20,000 pounds.
The upper arm's jaw is designed to grip the pipe
while allowing it to rotate within the jaw. The arms

Description
Working below the substructure of an offshore can-
tilevered jack-up rig can be awkward and dangerous.
The routine task of changing rams on the BOP stack
for example. Varco has provided the solution to this
problem in its compact and maneuverable BOP Work
Platform Scooter. Working essentially like a human
arm in its motions, its man-carrying basket can carry
a 1000 pound payload. The basket is 3 feet by 4 feet
-enough room for two men and their tools. The
workmen can travel through a 43 foot vertical reach
and a 60 foot diameter horizontal reach. The machine
itself can travel on rails the width of the substructure
-ensuring accessability of the entire region under the
substructure. It is self-contained, portable, light
weight (approximately 5 tons), and only requires rig
electrical power to run. It is easy to operate since the
four movements (travel, swing, arm & boom) are
push button controlled.

The Automatic Iron Roughneck AR-3000 BIG FOOT


incorporates the latest in electronic, hydraulic and
mechanical technology. It can, at the touch of a but-
ton, automatically move to find the tool joint, spin in
and make-up or break out and spin out and move
back to a stand-by position. All this is accomplished
through Big Foot's microprocessor brain and simple
solenoid operated valves. The control station can be
pendant mounted as are those of many machine
tools, or remote at either the driller's console or on an
independent pedestal. There are no gauges to read

The innovative new TW-100 Torque Wrench elimin-
ates all gates and latches, making it simpler and
quicker to get on and off the connection. This tool
provides up to 100,000 ft-lbs of make-up torque and
handles up to 9-1/2 in. O.D. drill collars.
The all new Hydraulic Spinning Wrench SSW-50 has
4 drive rollers each of which is individually driven by
its own motor. This transfers power to the drill pipe
more efficiently increasing spin-torque by 50%. At
the same time only half the clamping force is required
with less wear and greater life for rollers, bearings
and drill pipe.

Varco's Model IR2000 Big Foot is a safe efficient


system for tripping pipe. A combination of the pro-
ven hydraulic spinning wrench and the hydraulic
torque wrench, it provides fast, accurate stabbing and
quick, controlled spin up. Pipe can be torqued to
precise, consistent values without creating bending
stresses in the drill string. That alone can save you a
lot of tool joints and drill pipe.

HYDRAULIC TORQUE WRENCH

Making up and breaking out made simple. The


hydraulically powered TW-60 makes up and breaks
out drill pipe tool joints and drill collars from 4 to 8
inch OD. Torque is adjustable and can be pre-set to
the required value.

Upper and lower gripping structures provide the re-


quired torque. The TW-60 can rotate the tool joint pin
up to 34 degrees, to produce the desired torque while
providing its own back-up

A built in tugger is provided to pull the TW-60 back,


out of the way while lowering or raising pipe stands.
The tugger can also be used to assist in pulling the
TW-60 to a storage position.

The tool has 6-foot vertical travel range, so it can


locate at the exact tool joint height. The TW-60 is
human engineered with all controls on the front of
the tool.

A new dimension in safety is added with the Varco
Hydraulic Rig Team. Hazardous conditions on the rig
floor created by use of manual tongs — cable failure,
whip action of a tong being pulled, or breakage of the
tong itself — and spinning chain can seriously injure
personnel. Varco's tools alleviate these problems
thus minimizing the possibility of injury. Compact
design means no cluttering of the rig floor and the
TW-60 provides its own backup.

The Varco Safety Spinning Wrench, SSW-10, is a


pneumatically powered tool for spinning drill pipe
from 3-1/2 to 5-1/2 inch OD. Using the proven princi-
ple of frictional drive contact, the spinning wrench

AIR-SAFETY SPINNING WRENCH

Proving the old saying that "Good things come in


small packages", the SSW-40 is not only small in
size but also the most powerful pneumatic spinning
wrench on the market. Designed with the operator in
mind, the controls are simple and positioned for ease
of handling. An easy adjustment screw eliminates the
need to change rollers and can accomodate drill pipe
and drill collars from 3-1/2 to 9-1/2 inch OD.
The Varco SSW-40, proven and tested to Varco's
strict standards for performance and reliability, SSW-40
revolutionizes old ideas about how a spinning
wrench should look and work.
The speed of the SSW-40's four drive rollers, pow-
ered by two motors, is precisely controlled by the
operator to permit the slow walking in of drill collars
or fast spinning in or out when tripping pipe.
In a typical spinning operation the rig hand swings
the SSW-40 onto the pipe just above the joint upset.
The clamp control is pulled and the throttle handle
actuated to spin in or out with absolute precision. For
added safety a spin direction lockout feature is in-
cluded to prevent spinning pipe in wrong direction.

KELLY SPINNERS

Models 6600 and 6800 Kelly Spinners can be used for Model 6600
rotating drill pipe slowly, for limited rathole and
mousehole drilling and for making fast kelly connec-

tions. These units are completely reversible; the dril-
ler can spin out, as well as spin in, when making con-
nections, therefore, spinning chains are not required.

Installation is relatively simple. The Varco Kelly Spin-


ner is quickly made up to the swivel stem similar to a
routine sub installation, consisting of placing the
spinner in the string above the kelly cock attaching
the two torque arresting chains to the bumper block,
and connecting the hoses. The tool joint threads, 6-5/8
in. API regular left hand, are cut to API specifications.

Greater Safety for Rig Personnel. Snatch blocks and


multi-line hook-ups are not required for most connec-
tions. Shock loads are replaced by a smooth, steady
line pull to save wear and tear on rig tongs. Once ad-
justed, the HC-26 pulls to the desired force, up to
32,500 Ibs, every time and with a quickness that is
unequaled. It will make-up mousehole connections HC-26
also.
This tool features the simplest, most positive
automatic cable feedout system yet devised. After
completing makeup or breakout the control lever is
simply pushed into the detent position. The line will
automatically and smoothly feedout and stop ready
for the next joint.

Operation
Operation is very fast and simple. First adjust and
lock the load regulator for desired line pull. With
the control lever you can now make-up each connec-
tion to the exact same torque value every time. After
making-up a connection, push the control lever into
the detent position to quickly and automatically feed

HYDRAULIC POWER SUPPLIES

Varco Hydraulic Power Supplies are designed for


use with any closed center hydraulic power tools.
These power supplies use variable displacement pis-
ton pumps for the greatest efficiency. The pump is
rigidly mounted to the motor through a bell housing,
eliminating alignment problems. The reservoirs are
mounted above the pumps for positive fluid feed to
the pump inlet, better cooling and to make service ac-
cess easy. The motors and all other electrical com-
ponents are fully explosion proof, U.L. listed and cer-
tified by the U.S. Coast Guard for use offshore.

CASING JACKING SYSTEM

Increases Rig Capacity


Deeper drilling has forced rigs to increase in size.
Now, Varco has developed an alternative method of
increasing existing rig capacity. Instead of using the
rig's capacity to hold and lower the heavy casing
string, an independent jacking system is used.

The Jacking System costs a fraction of the price of a


rig rated at equivalent capacity. And, since it is not a
structural part of the rig, one jack can be used to ser-
vice several rigs.

Features
The diesel hydraulic power unit consists of two iden-
tical hydraulic systems connected in parallel. This
provides a backup in case of engine or pump failure.
Casing Jacking System in Operation
The Casing Jacking System uses two hydraulic
cylinders. Cylinder extension adapters enable the
cylinders to be installed upon substructures of

The elevators utilize both a bottom guide and a bell
guide to simplify stabbing. A top guide on spiders
helps to centralize casing.
All Varco hoisting tools are designed in accordance
with API specification 8A. Varco's quality assurance
program is certified by DNV to level 1.3. Each tool is
proof-tested at 1-1/2 times rated load and then sub-
jected to magnetic particle inspection to verify metal-
lurgical quality. If requested at time of purchase, data

Hook Adapters Bottleneck Center Latch Elevators


The 750 Ton Hook Adapter provides an easier, more Varco's line of Bottleneck Center Latch Elevators in
economical way of handling all link requirements en- 100, 150, 175, 250, and 350 ton capacities stand up to

traveling blocks allowing the use of 1000 ton rated
casing tools without the need of a very expensive 1000

Latch Elevator
Like all Varco products, the 125 and 150 ton SSC
elevators are distinguished by their innovative de-
sign, engineering excellence and metallurgical qual-
ity. These elevators are characterized by features
which improve crew efficiency and reduce fatigue.

Pipe can be stabbed straight into the SSC elevator.


Varco's narrow profile latch design provides a wide,
clear opening without obstruction, allowing crews to
work more quickly.

Lifting and closing the Varco elevator requires a frac-


tion of the force needed to lift and close other ele-
vators, because the SSC is so well balanced.

MASTER CASING BUSHINGS

The 37-1/2 and 49-1/2 MPCH is a Pin Drive Hinged MPCH


Master Casing Bushing specially designed for floating
and semi-submersible drilling operations. With insert
bowl No. 3 and optional insert bowls 1 and 2, the
MPCH will handle 2-3/8 to 13-3/8 inch OD drill col-
lars, tubing and casing with a design capacity of 500
tons. The MPCH has all the performance features of a
solid master bushing yet with a hinged design, the
MPCH can be removed from the drill string to pass
large bits and pipe connections directly through the
rotary table. The hinged design also prevents any ac-
cidental dropping of the master bushing thru the
table which eliminates the need for special lifters.

The MPCH incorporates latches that lock the bowls


into the bushing. Bowls are also equipped with re-
tainer pins to prevent them from falling out when the
master bushing is hinged open. Upon request the MPCH Parts List
MPCH can also be equipped with latches to lock into

MASTER CASING BUSHINGS

The 20-1/2 thru 27-1/2 MSPC is a Solid Body Pin


Drive Master Bushing designed for all drilling opera-
tions. The pin drive allows the kelly bushing to ride
on top of the rotary table and permits extended bowls
to be used for better slip backup. Better slip backup
means heavier strings can be run without the danger
of bottlenecking and gouging. With the extended API
insert bowl No. 3, the MSPC will handle 2-3/8 thru
8-5/8 inch OD drill pipe, drill collars, tubing, and cas-
ing. Insert bowl No. 2 can handle tubular goods 9-5/8
and 10-3/4 inches OD; while insert bowl No. 1 is good
for 11-3/4 and 13-3/8 inches OD. The MSPC, with
proper insert bowls to accommodate a given diameter
string, has a maximum capacity of 500 tons. As is the
case with all Varco Master Bushings, the MSPC has
latches to lock the bowls securely into the bushing.
The solid outer body takes all transverse loads and
provides proper backing for the split insert bowls,
allowing the rotary table to rotate freely, unimpaired
by transverse stress.

Casing Bushing (MSS) is designed for all drilling

square drive kelly bushing to sit within the master
bushing. Developed for use when a 10,000 foot well
was considered deep, the MSS still serves a useful
purpose where a large slip backup area is not re-
quired. With the extended API insert bowl No. 3, the

500 Ton HCS

CU, CUL, and CB Casing Bushings are inserted


directly into the rotary table and insure that the cas-
ing being run is perfectly aligned with the center of
the hole. Models CU and CUL are solid bushings and
Model CB is a split bushing. All of the bushings ac-
cept bowls of different sizes to accommodate a wide
range of casing. Used with Varco's CMS-XL or CP-S CUL
Slips, these bushings can handle the longest casing
strings currently being set. Also, since these bushings
fit into the rotary table, the casing string can be easily
rotated during cementing operations.

ROTARY SLIPS

SDS, SDML, and SDXL Rotary Slips are for


use in API standard insert bowls. Featuring better
contact and distribution of load on drill pipe thru a
superior wraparound configuration and unique insert
design, these slips prevent bottlenecking and goug-
ing damage. The buttress design of the body seg-
ments provides great strength while minimizing
weight for ease of handling.
Varco rotary slips provide long and troublefree ser-
vice under the most severe conditions. Inserts are
held securely in dovetail slots. Inserts are changed by
removing the nuts, bolts, and retainers at the top of
the slots.

Today's deeper drilling calls for long and heavy cas-
ing strings. Varco has slips to handle any casing job.
Varco CMS-XL slips are manufactured from drop
forgings, reinforced to take severe service. The self-
centering full wraparound grip prevents damage to CMS-XL
casing. With certain simple adjustments, the CMS-XL
can accommodate casing from 6-5/8 to 30 inches OD. RIGHT END
All Varco slips have an API taper of 4 in./ft on the SEGMENT SEGMENT
diameter.

Casing Elevator/Spiders
These elevator/spiders are adaptable to many applica-
tions and can handle casing sizes from 18 to30 inches.
The slips in these units are raised or lowered hydrau-
lically to grip or release the casing. Units are available
in either hinged or solid body configurations.

With optional lifting lugs the elevators will accommo-


date standard API 250 or 350 ton elevator links. In ad-
dition to the lifting lugs, the elevator configuration re-
quires slip segments and stabbing guides of the cor-
rect size and a bell guide.

The spider configuration requires slip segments and


stabbing guides of the correct size.
